D., Editor of the En cyclopedia of Religion* Knowledge. Although not disposed to favor or recommend Patent - Medicines in general, through distrust of their ingredients and effects: I 'yet - know of no sufficient reason why a man may not testify to the benefit ho believes himself to have received from any simple preparation in the hope that he may thus contribute to the benefit of others. I do this the more readily in regard to Roof land's German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M. Jackson : of this city, because I wasprejudiced against them for many years, under the impres sion that they were chiefly an alcoholic mixture, lam indebted to my friend Robert Shoemaker, Esq ~for the removal of this prejudice by proper ,ests. and for encouragement to try them, when suffering from great and long continued debility. The use of three bottles of these Bitters, at the beginning of the present year, was followed by evident relief; and restoration to a degree of sadly and mental vigor which I had not felt for ix months before, and had almost depaired of re tailing. I therefore thank God and my friend for tireoting me to the use of them. J. NEWTON BROWN PHILADELPHIA, June 1861. 13•0 m thy Rev. T Jn+enh 11, K9 . l . inar t i. Pantor of the Tenth DR. They met, in 1824% al Washington, asSen ators of the United States. rhe Tennessee Senator soon iortned his opinion about tile Nt.w Vork Senator. I will give his own narrative, as I listened to it under the porch of the hermitage in 1814. 'I had heard at good deal about Mr. Van Ituren,' said the General, 'especially about his lien-ceiatudfali , m. I made up my mind Flint 1 would take an early opportunity to hear him and judge for mysell. One dwy an important subject was under debate in the Senate. I noticed that Mr. Van Hu. ren was taking nott s while one of the Sen ators was speaking. I judged from this that he intended to reply, and 1 deter mined to be in no scat when he spoke. Kr. Van Buren's Memoirs. "Mr. Van Ruren has lefrmemoirs, part ly finished. It' his reminiscences can be given to the world as he was in the habit of giving them to his friends, in all the freshness of familar intercourse, they will be most attractive. There was a charm about his conversation when it turned on the incidents of his personal experience which could hardly be transfered to the printed page, so much of its interest. de pcnded en mannerand expression Mr. Van Buren had no wit, but he had humor, and a keen sense for the humorous, and he could reproduce, with rare fidelity, what ever in the actions or the charactel• of men he had thOught worth remembering. It is to be hoped that out of the material he has left for such a work we may have one which shall represent to us something of the real activities . and interior lives of those of whom we know so' little beyond their names and titles, so that they may seem to us more like living men and less like mmurriies. At this present momerie.we could hardly step to read such a book, no matter how vivid and lifelike. But ;Li ter the storm and earthquake are over, and we have learned to value the republic by what it has cost us in brave lives, we, or eyes younger than ours, will turn with new interest and delight to whatever in literature or in art shall be commemora. tive of those who have served it best.
