The Bishop, it will be remem bered, died suddenly with an - apoplectic fit, while walking on the track of the A lle gheny Valley Railroad, a short distance below Tarentum, matte 8d day of August, 1861. The monument, in the language of Bishop Stevens, who delivered the address on the occasion, was the tribute of the Bishop and clergy of a diocese to one whom the whole diocese loved. It is erected on the spot where the Bishop so suddenly died. The monument is a rock of Freeport stone, fourteen feet high and divided in three sections. In the first sec tion is a marble tablet, bearing this ap- , propriate and elegant inscription: "On this spot, August :Id, 1862, the Rt. Rev. Samuel Bowman, D.D., Assistant Bishop of Pennsylvania, was, in an in stant, called from his Master's serVice to his reward. The angel of God met him alone in the way, and he was not, for God took him.' An humble and unselfish man of God—s faithful and devoted bishop in the church of Christ." In the second section is the insignia of 1 the Bishop: the mitre and the cross; the key and the crosier; and the Bible, with, on the one leaf, the words, "The; time is short," "Be ye also ready:" and on the I other, "This stone shall be a witness unto us." - -Joshua, xxiv., 27th. On the upper section is a representation of the cross, in bold relief, and. on each side, the name of Bishop Bovman, in raised letters. The monument was erected by Mr. l'eter Reniers, on Penn st.. above Wayne, and does great credit to the artistic skill and workmanship of that gentleman. After the selections from the 21st, 2:th and 84th Psalms, Rev. Dr. Deusen read part of the 2d chapter of 21 Kings. The chant, sung by a portion of the choir of St. Peter's Church, was very solemn and impressive' - We ca4pi,ot give even an outline of the eloquent address of the Bishop. ft was a just tribute to a worthy and lamented man, and was delivered in a manner that proved the eloquent divine to be in earnest in all he said in behalf of the character of his lamented predecessor. Among the clergy present we noticed Rei. Dr. Van Densen, 'of St. Peter's: Rev. Messrs. Slattery, of St. James': Mayer, of Chartiers: Smith, of Union town: Ommlish, of Columbia: Edwards, of Lawrenceville; Hilton, of Kittanning, and White, of Butler. Pfunallity School Pie sic. We would again remind our readers that ;he annual Pic Nic for the benefit of the Sunday Schools attached to St. Paul's Cathedral takes place to-day at Iron City park. The object is in every way worthy of the support of our charitable citizen', as the expenses of the schools are neces sarily heavy, an idea of which may be had, judging from the fact that upwards of twelve hundred scholars receive re ligious instruction within this school.-- Aside front the meritorious object, the Pic Nic premises to be a; splendid enter tainment, as the managers have neither snared expense or trouble to render the affair as agreeable and successful as any held this season. To all who would enjoy a pleasant day of innocent amusement in the cool shades of Iron City Park and at the same time contribute their aid towards the moral education of the young we would urgently urge attendance at the Pie Nic to-day at Iron City Park. Poor Dr. Whitesell, and now poor Dr. Tom, (thus we all knew him. this' was a respecoll sobriquet) have gone away, nev er to return, leaving many friends to re gret their early and sudden detith, and, each of them, a fond wife and children to mourn a bitter and very sad bereavement —father and husband eat down in the very acme of vigorous manhood and successful professional duty. Dr. Dickson was born in Cecil co., Md. He was about eight years old when his parents emigrated to Western Pennsylva nia. His Classical studies weir: pursued in Jefferson College, Canonsburg, and he took his medical degree in the Cuiversity of New York. In 1852 he went to Eu rope to visit some of the most noted med ical schools, and spent most, of his time in those of Paris, London and Edinburg.
