Mr.. Jas. Boyle is exhibiting, at the foot of Fifth street, a valuable article called the "Improved Water Filter and Cooler." It is the invention of Andrew T. Dunshee, of McKeesport, in this county, and is one of the greatest improvements-known in • filtering. It consists of a square box, with perforated bottom, upon which is placed several layers of charcoal, of different de grees of fineness. It will thoroughly purify the foulest water, and even if' _salt or brackish, leave it clear, pure and free from all sediment or deleterious mat ter. By changing the arrangement of the layers of charcoal it can be made to filter slowly cr rapidly. The novelty of the invention is the use of the perfor ated !mttom and filtering cloth, in con nection with the triple strata of char coal. The machine is neat, corn - pact and serviceable and does all that is claimed for it. Mr. Boyle is about to visit Washington for the purpose of pre senting to the government the advantages these• filters would lie to our armies by land or sea, as it would always ensure, when water could be obtained at till. a pure and palatable article, however foul it may be when introduced. Recruiting. It is estimated by many that nut less than 2,500 men have been recruited in Allegheny county since the first call fur 300,000 men. Some companies are organizing, of which fifteen have almost reached the minimum, while some have more and many forty or fifty men, and few have less than thirty. Two-thirds of the'number have been recruited in the last three days. Several companies were sworn in yesterday and all the complete organi zations will leave for Harrisburg to day and to-morrow. After the 10th no nine months' men will be received and all squads sent forward will he consolidated into companies after that date. We would therefore strongly urge upm recruiting officers the Lc:, siityof forming theirsquads into companies before starting. Shocking Accident. On Wednesday night, the wife of Jacob Ringeling, of Pride street, Eighth Ward, was so dreadfully burned while filling a lamp, that she will scarcely recover. The lamb becoming empty, and not wishing. to extinguish the light, she removed the burner, and commenced pouring in oil from a can, holding the burning wick so close that the vapor ignited, exploding the can,.and covering her with the burning fluid. Having children in the room, she - fled to another part of the house. and thence to a porch. where she fell writhing in pain, her cio7hing having been nearly all burnt off. Her face, breast, arms, and and in fact the entire front part of her body, was frightfully and deeply burned. She is about twenty six years of age. and has a child or.,;y six- weeks old. The Focilkilihai t 'a 'age' Connate- KNtrre ] P etr y•• hentociTit of the 2d gives the following description of the fearful scene which occurred at the levee of that city on Friday 'fait About half past f; o'clock last evening the most terrible accident occurred at the river that we have been forced to chronicle for years. The steamer Commodore Per ry, Captain Andrews, which arrived in the morning from Cumberland river with a load - of cotton and tobacco, collapsed a flue and immediately caught are. She had been receiving additional freight, destined for Cincinnati, and was about to leave when the accident ocmrred. It is utterly impossible to tell the loss of life, though it was great, as most of the passengers were at the supper table. The noise and confusion, the shrieks of the wounded, shouts and cries of men, and neighing of horses, amid the smoke and steam, was terrific. Many of the passen gers jumped overboard, and as the lines were still on shore. though not. fast, reach ed the shore in safety. Others who jumped over were drowned. Those who were blown into the river were either killed by the concussion or drowned in the water. (Joe lady with a child in her arms, ac companied by an elderly woman, believed to be her mother, jumped overboard on the shore side, and fell with her entire weight ou the edge of a sunken skiff, striking her in the breast and head ; the blow deprived her of life for a time, but she was resuscitated and removed for proper attention. The elderly lady also jumped, but towards the river side, and, going in head first, must have been drowned. Two or three firemen, who were stand ing in front of the boilers at the time, were dreadfully scalded; one of them, Wm. White, of Pittsburgh, cannot live. The books and papers having been lost, it is impossible to give a list of the passen gers, or even of those lost. The number killed and drowned is believed to have been ten or twelve. ==l anti, Hamilton and Dayton Railroad Co.. who was in the clerk's ollles at the tinie, was blown up so that his head struck the hurricane roof; but he fell back again, and rushed out on. the guards, and, as soon as he recovered from the shock, gave all the assistance he could. The cotton on board caught fire instant ly. and the flames spread with terrific rapidity. The steam fire-engines were soon on the spot, but they could not. save anything above the hold. There were a number of horses aboard : two or three were blamed, nod one jumped overboard and was saved. The number of passen gers was believed to be about thirty.— Capt. Andrews and the clerk are among the uninjured. The amount of cotton we did not learn. but it was heavy. A portion of it was shipped bY Messrc. Guthrie 1 Cu— Cdf this city. This is t to season when private families are in the habit of putting up in tin cans or otherwise preserved vegetables, and partienlarly tomatoes. for fall and winter use. Let us temind such of the claims of the sick and wounded soldiers, aLd to suggest a plan that they should double. treble, or quadruple their usual quan tity, in order that they may thus con tribute to tha comfort and recovery of the sick and wounded. Perhaps there is no one thing that is more medicinally useful and beneficial to invalids than ripe tomatoes, and the demand for them in tin cans has been so great that the supply has been exhausted fur several months. No more acceptable or useful service can he performed than by families adopting the plan of putting up a huge extra supply beyond, what they may require for their own use. If this plan is generally follow ed, thete will be an ample supply for our gallant and suffering soldiers: :111d in no way could so small an mthly be so advan tageously applied. ire - would further suggest that those who follow the preservation of vegetabl... , as a regular trade aril business ghoul largely increase their usual quantity, as the Government will undoubtedi) eoine into the market fa• a very large ,upply: and we would indeed ttgge.st that ills Medical llepartment should ut one, he authorized to issue proposals forth.• proli abla required supply of such articles.
