Death or Col. Leopold Sahl.
In the proper place will be found the
funeral announcement of the death of Col.
Leopold Suit, one of our oldest and most
respected German citizens, who died yes
terday morning, after an illness of some
two weeks. Col. Sahl was a native of
rreyburg, Germany, and emigrated to this
country itt 182 C. He worked here as a
shoemaker for some years, and then
opened a tavern on Smithfield street, which
was burned down in the great fire of 1845
Subsequently he opened a hotel on Water
street, and afterwards a liquor store, which
ne earned on very successfully, amassing
a handsome competency. Col. Sahl leaves
a wife but no children, his only son, Capt.
Leopold Sahl, jr., having been killed in an
engagement with the rebels in Virginia.
Lol. bahl was a liberal man and a good
citizen, contributing largely to the support
ot public charities, one of which—the
orphans Asylum on Troy Hill—he was
the principal founder. He was highly
esteemed by the entire community, and al
ways sustained an unblemished reputation
ins loss will be a source of universal re
gret among his acquaintances
