He reports the_ army as then encamped j

order, and fast recruiting. .Reinforce
ments were landing and were being re
ceived with cheers and tremendous enthu
m<igm by McClellan’s worn out, but not
mshtftrteoed men.
The captain describes the Tuesday’s
fight as the heardest-fought battle of the
si* days’ campaign. Our men fought
trom 5 o'clock in the morning till yat
night, drivug the enemy at all points.
Twenty-four guns were taken from the
enemy, two of them Parrot guns of supe
rior pattern. 1
- The. rebels never advanced in single
line of battle, but came on sometimes
three or foar lines deep.
■ The canteens of the rebels when taken I
were found to be filled with whiskey and
gunpowder. Contrary to the report pre
vailing in Washing last evening, General
McClellan was not on the gunboat during
the engagement of Tuesday, but was on
land directing the movements.

THE LATEST.
WasiriSGTOX, July 6. —Despatches have
been received from Generaf McClellan,
dated as late ns one o’clock p. m. Friday
July 4th.
The following is their substance, omit
ting military details and operations not
proper for present publication. There
had been no fighting since Tuesday night,
when the enemy were repulsed-with great
slaughter.
The army moved to the position now
occupied because it affords greatly supe
rior advantages for the co-operation of the
gunboats, of which seventeen are now in
the river protecting the flanks of our army.
-"VO guns have been lost 'since the en
gagement on Friday, June 27th, when
General McCall’s division was at the onset
overwhelmed, and twenty five pieces fell
luto the hands of the enemy.

Fortress Monroe, July 2.—A boat ar
at Fortress Monroe last night which

m.—Col. C. ttoss Smith, who is connected
with the Beserve Cavalry informs me that
thei'r force niimbeiing over I,ooo,have all
arrived here this evening. This command
with the flying artillery, and abont 1,500
infantry, were placed under command of
Gen. Stoneman, to attend to the removal of
government property at the White House.
Ihevsaw it all safely removed, and the
building destroyed, and on Saturday even
ing they left the White House, after ship
ping all the goods. Their infantrv, 1,600,
retreated to Williamsburg, arriving at that
place early on Snnday morning, from
whence they went to Yorktown, where
they shipped their artillery. Their men
are all in good health and spirits, and
have only lost two of their number, who
were taken while on picket duty. They
represent the expedition as admirably
planned and managed by G*i. Stoneman.
Ihe cavalry consisted eftiie Sixth United
States, two squadrons of the old dragoons
or First Cavalry, and two squadrons of the
Sixth Pennsylvania lancers.
The cavalry, infantry and artillerv, in
all, numbered about 3,000 men, and many
of them have been erroneously reported
captured. It was believed to be so in the
mam army,

Washington-. July 5 —The (teamen
Louisiana and Vanderbilt arrived at this
port yesterday, bringing thirteen hundred
sick and wounded soldiers from James
river.
Ambulances were employed till a late
hour last night conveying them to the va
rious hospitals in W ashington and vicinity*
Many were able to walk to and from the
ambulances. Our citizens readily assisted
in the work of removal. These patients
are the recipients of good care and kind
attentions, and the ladies have entered in
to humane service with zeal.

Cape Race, Jniy 6.— The steamship
Hibernia, trom Liverpool on the 37th, via
Londonderry on the 28th, passed this
point this morning.
The steamship Bohemian, from Qnebec,
arrived at Liverpool on the 24th.
The steamship Persia arrived at Queens
town on the 26th nit.
The sales ol cotton for the week amount
ed to 15,000 bales. The market was much
excited and prices have advanced lfotHd
per pound. *

It is asserted that Napoleon has resolv
ed to send snfficinnt troops to Mexico to
force a way to the capital against all ob

Admiral Grarere will immediately take

is justified by what may arise out of the
American war and Mexican affairs, and
with the London Herald, urges interven

Memphis, July G.-At Helena, Arkan-
I sas, there is a band of guerrillas two thou
sand strong, who are threatening the peo
ple with cotton burning and general de

| ders that whatever loss is sustained by the
Government, collections shall be made by
the siezure of sufficient amount of personal
property from persons of the immediate
vicinity sympathizing with rebellion to re
munerate the Government for all losses.
.Persons acting as guerrillas will not be
treated as prisoners of war.
The Mississippi river, north of Vicks
burg, is reported lined with men trying to
escape the conscription. The Federal
boats are continually hailed bv persons
waiting to be taken aboard tvitn their
cotton.
The people everywhere represent great
suffering and hardships.
On an island below White river 2,500
men have fled from the conscription, and
arennited agaitist their oppressors for pro
tection. 1

A Brilliant Affair.

Official reports have just been received
ot a brilliant affair of our cavalry near
tioonevtlle, Miss., on the Ist inst. Col.
Sheridan, of the Ist Michigan Cavalry, with
two regimentsof seven hundred and twenty
eight men, were attacked by parts of eight
regiments of rebels, numbering some 4,700
men, which he defeated and drove back
alter seven hours hard fighting. Our loss
w “ killed, wounded and missing; that
of the enemy must have been very great.
They left 60 dead On the field. Official
reports will be forwarded by mail. I re
spectfully. recommend Col. Sheridan for
promotion for gallant conduct in battle.

Rebel Clnuboat Captured.
Washington, July o.— The rebel gun
boat Teazer was captured in a bend of the
James river on the 4th. \ ery important
papers were found on her.
The committee on the conduct of the
having made a thorough investigation
of the case of Dr. Hayes, lately dropped
from the army by order of the Secretary of
War for neglect of duty while engaged in
the transportation of sick and wounded
soldiera to Washington, are fully satisfied
of the justice oi his dismissal.
Major Patterson of the 62d Pennsylva
nia, Col. McQnade, of the 14th, and
Col. Yan Wyck, of New York, heretofore
reported killed, are, it is said by a gentle
man who arrived here'to-day from James
river are alive.

Last Friday night as two gentlemen were
returning to their homes in Allegheny
City, they heard cries “for help” which
appeared to come from the river a short
distance below the St, Clair street bridge.
They immediately ran down to some oii
boats which line the shore at this point and
arrived just in time to save the life of a
man who in a few seconds more would
have-been “food for Ashes.” He stated
that he had fallen from one of the upper
bridges in an intoxicated condition, lie
declined giving his name or residence and
his only trouble appeared to he the loss of
his hat.
Thk Focktk passed quietly in our city.
The news from Richmond seemed to have
cast a sombreness over every face. There
were no disturbances of any kind in the
city. The places of amusement were all
well filled, and Van Aniburgh’s Menagerie
especially did a tremendous business.
The Orphans’ Pie Nic at the Iron City
Park was largely attended, and around the
country there were numerous private pic
nics.

Cutting Affair.
Mr. John Obey, Jr., ono of theconduc
i tors on the Citizens' Passenger Railway
■ was stabbed and dangerously wounded’
• °» Saturday night by a man named Thos
i Keenan, a resident of Lawrenceville.—
Keenan, who is said to have been under
the influence of liquor, was noisy and be
having badly in the cars, in which there j
were women, and Mr. Obcv directed him
to keep quiet. At. this he' took offence
and drawing a knife, cut Mr. Obey on the
back and twice on the stomach, severely.
He was taken to Dr. Kerns' office, on Penn
street, under the impression that his
wounds were mortal, but the doctor dress
ed them skilfully and on Sunday we learn
ed that there were hopes of his recovery
Keenan was arrested and taken before
Alderman Taylor, of the Fifth Ward, who
committed him to prison.
