The Instructions Under which Jackson Acted The Baltimore Clipper has received, from its correspondent at Winchester, Va., copies of important rebel documents found in the place by our troops after the defeat of Jackson. On the 28th of May General Johnston sent the following instructions to Jackson: - • " HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF NORTHERN t VA.. May 1852. 9:15 o'clock. .1 "To General T. J. Jackson: " GENERAL:—I have just received your letter of yesterday, by Lieutenant Boswell. A copy of a dispatch telegraphed by that officer from Staunton reached .me this morning. After reading, I wrote to you by a special messenger, suggesting a move ment threatening Washington and Balti more, unless the enemy still has in your vicinity force enough to make it rash to attempt it. He has no force beyond the Potomac to make it dangerous; only what he has on this side need be considered. "You cannot, in your present position, employ such an army as yours upon any enterprise not bearing directly upon the state of things here, either by preventing the reinforcements, to McClellan's army, or by drawing troops from it by divisions. These objects might be accomplished by the demonstrations proposed above, or by a movement upon McDowell, although I fear that by the time this reaches you it will he too late for either. The most im portant service you can render the einlntry is the preventing the firrther strengthening of McClellan's army. If you find it too late for that, strike the most important body of the enemy you can reach. You compel me to publish orders announcing your success so often, that you must. ex pect repetition of expressions. " Yours very truly, J. E..lottNizrox. " P. From an Occasional Correspondent WAsiumproN„Tune 15, 18.6 . 2. A report prevailed this morning among the members of the Diplomatic Corps in this city that private letters had been re ceived at the French legation concerning theaction of the French cabinet in relation o Mexican affairs. These letters state that an official paper will soon make its appearance in the Mon itertr, fully vindicating the policy of the French government in the Mexican expe dition : declaring that France never con temphtted the idea of going to Mexico for anybody's account - but her own, and that as to the visionary project of founding a monarchy in that country for the House of Austria, she leaves the responsibility of it to those who first raised that idea, but that she has nothing to do with it. What France is seeking now is the re dress of the wrongs inflicted upon her own citizens, and the payment of a debt. If the presence of a French army can help in bringing down the odious tyranny which, for over forty years, has afflicted that coun try to the great prejudice of the commerce and industry of the world, and at the same time enable the government elected by the choice of the people to secure to all Mex ican citizens the enforcement of the laws, the security of private property, and the order indispensable to.peace, France will have reason to believe that she has deserv ed the thanks not only of the Mexicans themselves, but of all the civilized nations. The same paper will also state that while France sees with regret the withdrawal of her allies from the expedition, she cannot look upon this as a motive for giving up the idea of redressing the wrongs she so justly complains of, nor of abandoning the design she maturely digested before she embarked in the expedition. Consequent ly, she will give notice to England and Spain of her resolution to act alone in the prosecution of a plan in which the triumph of justice and humanity are concerned, and advisejhem at the same time that rein forcemahts have been ordered to be sent to Mexico. A Fleet of Steamers at Nassau. A letter from Nassau, N. P., dated on the 9th instant, states - that there was a large fleet of steamers in port, recently arrived from England, viz:—Memphis, Bahama Lloyd, Pacific, Tuba!, Cain, Hero, and Oretes. The last named is said to be fitted out for a privateer, and report says that Lieut. Matra, of the rebel navy is to command her. There are so many different reports in circulation as to the nature of the cargoes on these ves sels, that it is difficnlt to arrive at facts. All parties, however, agree in saying they each have a cargo suited to the wants of "Dixie" The steamer Cecil had ar rived from Charleston, making the tenth time she had been successful in running the blockade; small sailing craft are ar riving almost daily from Wilmington and Charleston. SZEMaII THE ROBBER'S ROOST ; • OR, HANS' LAST VIOTIM It was a sultry afternoon that I crossed the Mississippi river, and negligently traveled on my way toward Greenfield. The cool shades which covered the road, and the majestic woodland seenery, whiled away the time so pleasantly, that before I was aware of it the sun was down and darkness was gently drooping its black veil. I looked about me, and became alarmed at the density of the forest. The sighing of the wind, the rustling Of a bush, the hooting of an owl startled me. In the thick shades of almost ever tree I imag ined a wild beast ready to spring upon me, and from behind the trees' monstrous trunks expected some hideous animal to dash furiously at me. I carried my re volver ready for any emergency; and I I loosened my heavy knife in its scabbard. But little did I imagine that, having pass ed the dangers of the woods, those of a more fearful and awful character awaited me. The darkness had become intense, and it was with the greatest difficulty I could pursue my course. At length a light hove in view ; and never in all, my life did I hail its gentle lustre with greater joy. When 1 neared the spot, 1 found n di lapidated log house, two stories high, with a rickety old porch in front. A couple of gaunt., ferocious hounds csme rushing at me, and warned the inmates of my ap proach. I scrutinized the premises as closely as I could in the darkness, and was anything hut satisfied with the result of my investigations. But when I looked about me and saw the heavy gloom which hung upon 'everything, and the prospect of being devoured by wolves, I concluded to first inquire the distance to the next stop ping place. and if it was too far, to remain where I was. The door opened, and a husky voice said, "Who'se there?" "A stranger," I replied, and followed up by asking "how tar to the next stop ping placer I - could hear a low murmur of voices, and then a reply came, "Ten miles or more.— I dismounted and fastened my horse to a post, and as I ascended the old rickety stairs of the porch, they creaked a dismal dirge, and the gaunt, lean hounds nipped savagely at my heels. The roam which I entered presented such a repulsive appearance, that I started back with mingled surprise and disgust. The eyes of several rough, uncouth look ing individuals were turned upon me, and I felt in their glance something more ofthe ferociousness of the wed beast, than the gentle gaze of humeri beings. "Take a seat, stranger,' said a a burly thick-set mum as he handed me a chair that groaned piteously with its infirmities. As 1 cast a glance upon the group before the, I seemed to hesitate, which was in stantly noticed, and the officiating man, who seemed to be landlord, came toward me, and, in as conciliatory tone and style as could be expected, said : ••S'orry can't accommodate you better, stranger, but make yourselfet home, we'll do the best by you we kin.'' A significant glance passed among the men as the host concluded his hospitable invitation, which did not escape my no tice. do CO.. At length supper was served, consist ing of corn bread and bacon, and for this meagre tare abundant apologies were offer ed. After listening a short time to their dis gusting conversation, I informed my host 1 would like to retire. "Will you leave your saddle bags ?" said he, with a bland smile, us he extend ed his monstrous hand to take them. "No, sir," I replied, with a heavy frown gathered on my brow. "I have a very safe place to keep them," he rejoined, while his blood-shot eyes stabbed me to the heart. "No doubt, — I said, with a meaning nod, ••but I would prefer taking them with me." This conclusion was received rather coolly, and as I was preparing to leave the room, one of the men espied the handle of my revolver protruding from beneath my cont. "Hello, stranger," he exclaimed in a quick tone, "let's see that 'ere pistol, will your So sudden had been the demand, and in such seeming innocent curiosity, that I put my hand hack to give it to him. But a second thought decided me, and I replied, "that it was no great curiosity, and I would show it to him in the morn ing." By this time the men had gathered around me, and seeing things looked rath er peculiar, I backed myself through the door, followed by the host. When the door was dosed, I could hear loud mur muring, and an oath or two uttered in ve hement tones. The landlord hurried me up a feeble pair of stairs, and a few yards from the landing pushed open a door and bade me enter. I glanced around the apartment, and showed, by my action, that I was dis satisfied with its appearance. "It's the best 1 can do for you, strang er," said he, "and you needn't be afraid of the fellows down stairs, they won't hurt anybody." "I shall not be alarmed," I replied, as he closed the door and descet.ded the steps. I was somewhat annoyed at the appearance of thing ' s, and determined to place myself in the best possible position of defense. I examined my quarters closely, and found the door had no fasten ing, whatever, nor was anything conve nient with which it could be secured. Deteriiined not to be baffled, I tore a piece of board from the wall, andwith my knife cut a piece sufficiently long to make a brace from the lower cleat ofthe door to the floor. Then with my pocket knife I bored holes in the upper end, and driiw ing several nails from the wall, I drove them in with the handle of my large knife. Having examined the walls and appre hending no treachery from them, I se- I cured the window, and then turned my attention to the floor. Beneath the bed I discovered a trap door, and its discovery made my hair stand on end. I found it opened downward, and the possibility of securing it strongly seemed hopeless.
