I was taken with a severe diarrhcea. which seemed incurable. and which greatly weakened use. When we reached Martinsburg, I feared I should have to come home; but noticing some of your Bitters in the store Mr. 11. U. A number of my comrades, who suffered in the same manner and from the same cause, with whom shared the Bitters, join me in this certificate. I expect to return to the seat of war with the Leg ion, and shall certainly take a supply of the Bit ters in my knapsack. The late war operations in Atneriea have led to considerable discussion in Prussian military circles. and the system apparently i adopted by General McClellan is compar ed to that atilt. Their final success was partly ow ng to this fortunate accident, partly to the dashing i4t•rieralship of Blucher, and, above all. to their numerical superiority, the Austrians. Russians and Prussians out numbering the French in the proportions of two to one. It is doubted whether the same propor tion exists between the, federal ;armies and those of the Confederates, although the strength of the latterhasevidently been very much exaggerated; and the position of McClellan before Yorktown, where he is cut off from all connection with the corps of McDowell and Banks, is considered to be far less favorable than that of Schwar zenberg. in Bohemia, who was in constant and ninth errupted communication with • Blucher, in Silesia, and Bernadotte, on the frontier of Saxony, while the American General is completely isolated and unable I to afford assh.tauce to, or receive aid front, his lieutenants operatingon the Shenandoh and the Rappahannock. LAVALLETTE AND FIIANCIS ►► We insert below the account Of all inter view which took place in Home, between the Marquis de Lavaßette, the French ant bassador, and Francis 11, the ex-King ot the Two Sicilies. The conversation shows the young monarch to be every inch a king. The uses of adversity have at least enabled the world to see the brilliant points of his noble character, and find him greater in his fall than in his days ofthight. Though threat ened by the pressure of French, English and Sardinian policy, he stands erect, dig rated and uncompromising, breasting the triple weight of three tyrannies, sooner than shrink from what he knows is his by right and justice. The adroit approaches j of the accomplished Frenchman are grace fully repulsed by the straightforward re sponses of the young monarch, who insin uates very clearly that he is the victim of the bad faith of France and Sardinia. Clearly he takes with him in his exile what his royal persecutors have long since in=n —a character without blur or stain, his honor untarnished, his sincerity unsuspeet - ed. '•No one," says the London Register, commenting on this Mt erview. "can read these masterly words without feeling that a great mind, as well as a great character, has rapidly ripened in the se vere trials to which Francis 11. has been exposed; and without suspecting that the ultimatum so freely and manfully given by the young Sovereign to the overtures of the French Emperor may have inure concern than at present appears with his curiously embarassed attitude at Come. -Nothing can be more noble than the sim ple dignity of the young King's language." Vet when we have scanned all that is sail by this noble young monarch, we ask our selves of what avail is justice, or honor, or right, when they stand in the way of ambitious princes. With tlumi the :argu ment of force outweighs all others. •• La Raison de plus fort est toujonrs la meil lieure." In fact, we imagine we see in these attempts to influence the choice of residence of the young ex-King of Naples, a revival of the Napoleonic eflOrts against the temporalities of the I tidy Father. The recall of Coyon indicates some fresh ne gotiations with Sardinia. The renewed pressure upon Francis 11. May have for its object the securing of the Two Sicilies for Murat, at the price of Come tar Victor Emanuel, The crisis so long foreshad owed seems to be drawing once more to a point, and it may well be feared that the good Pio Nino is soon to share the title ot his illustrious namesake and predecessor. lie is not the first and he may not be the last of the Pontiffs who have•been stripped of the temporalities of the Church. But, although his hard lot may be like that ot many of his predecessors, we feel assured, from the history of the past, that it is not in the designs of Providence that the wrongs of the papacy shall be permanent or unavgnged : the clouds which envelop it shall be no more than thei utss:lll4 Va pors which obscure for a MOVlelli the brightness which they cannot extinguish.— Batt inove Mire, The king of Naples and the French Ant IMS/43114i or.
