CITY AND NEIGMIONINID INTILLIGENCE Banks Diseredited. The Northwestern Bank, of Warren, formerlithe Warren County Bank, and the'lleverly. Bank, N.. 1., are thrown out and discre di ted, as is announced in an extra issued froin the office of the "Na tional Bank Note Reporter," yesterday. The paper of the former bank has not sus tained-1r high character for some time past. Several weeks ago the Buffalo papers de nounced it and McElroy's "Bank Note Reporter" cautioned the public against it a few days since. A large amount of the notes are in circulation. in Buffalo and elsewhere, but we believe there is little afloat here. Summer Beverages. Although most of . our readers have drank the bottled beverages so universally sold in the summer season, very flow have. any knowledge of their ingredients or the manner in which they are made. To en lighteq ouch as desire to be informed on the subject,-we yesterday paid a visit to the most extensive bottling establishment in the city, that of J. C...l3nltlim. No. Market• street, near Second, whose lone experience - enables him to fUrnisli, by means of the latest improvements hi the business; an article eipial, if not superi.lr. to any in market. - The body of the Iwo most popular of the mineral bevera,, , res, in fact the only ones: Made and sold in this city, )-" pop' and " sarsaparilla,'' is the stone, vi?.: water, charged with carbonic add gas, the only difference being in the syrups used. The gas, is from time immemorial, is genera-.ed in copper vessels, by decompo sing marble-dust with dilute sulphuric acid. and. passes, after purification by passing through water, by means of pipes, into copper fountains, tin lined, already filled with purified water. The gas and water are mixed by agitation, and we have mineral . water. During the bottling pro cess the supply of gas is constantly kept, up, and , there'M a continual pressure upon the fountains and pipes almost as power ful as that upon a steam boiler. _ • The fountains being — charged, bottling begins. - The machine consists of a table or platform, the height of a man's breast, from which two rods run upward, on which loosely play a collar, fitting over the neck of the bottle, and above it a pipe, with stop - cock, connect ing with the fountains. These are moved up and down by a lever under the machine, worked by the foot of the bottler. On the other side of the table is stationed a boy, by whom the bottles, previously washed scrupulously clean, are placed under the machine, and, after they are filled and corked, taken away and placed in the wooden hampers, bolding two dozen each, from which they are afterwards served. The bottling is rapid and simple. A bottle being: placed under the machine, the operator turas a small gunge-cock, which permits a certain quantity of syrup, made from double refined sugar, Hondu ras sarsaparilla root and pure essential oils, to past,. through the supply pipe above and the:;Cokking collar, (both of which have been brought down by a touch of the lever ender the platform) into it. Another motion closes this pipe and opens the valve from tht fOultaies, fillinkthe bottle almost instantaneously. The pipe now slides up the rod bytinother move of the lever and a cork, predously softened in warm water, is introduced, through the collar before mentioned, immediately over the mouth of the bottle; a stroke of i lhe plunger drives it down into the neck and the bottle of "Sarsaparilla" is removed from the machine by the attendant, who, by a single motion of the finger, pushes over the cork a curiously bent piece of wire, hinging on the neck of the bottle, for the purpose of holding the cork place; until it is necessary .to slip it off when the bottle is to be, ppefed. This wiring of the bottle is a new•tavention by a citizen of Cleve land, taking the place of the old system of tyisql...i,-which consumed annually, in Mr. BMSree business, six to ten tons of twine--quite.an item in itself. The labor of two boys to tie the bottle and one to remove thetildstrings prior to washing is also saved this simple and cheap appli ance, whilthhidaae long as the bottle. "Pop simply the mineral water, sweetened with lemon syrup, instead of sarsaparilla. as described above. The machinery, it will be seen, is far from being complicated or cumbrous, and five kandiy , t - Wo to wash bottles, one to keep the ..plantains supplied and two at the hun bottl re im=ie, easily put uptbree to five py. The bainess. of er da lir.Buffam is constant ly increasing—we do not mean the usual increase of the summer over the winter season, but the regular growth of the busi ness. He .now runs six wagons constant ly and 'cawacarceli suppply the demand or his product .. e thinks ho will soon be obligedto put up another bottling ma chine. The &tridents of the business and the frailtY4kaloss produce, though the bot; tier are ands_ very heavy, a large break age, repainz, an annual expenditure of about KOOO to supply. Corks, which are purchased: in large bales ' are also a costly item and two or three tons of refined gnu ?knead each week in making the flavoring raps. The sugar is all refined a secoal, tvike and the water purified and cleanisitimfore entering into the compo sition of the mineral waters, which are eonseqiintly perfectly free from dirt. To many they are extremely palatable and the consumption, especially in hot weather`, is very la rge. Mr. Btaffum also bottles porter, — ale and sweet cider, with special reference to the wants of &zanies, selecting only the best articles of each and taking every possible p_recantion _to preserve their good qualities. He will supply all who desire it regularly at their residence. This is a large and rapidly increasing branch of his business and his bottled ale. especially has a high reputation.
