Our Army Passinit the eighths. hominy. WHITE 11017 , 41 , .. V.S.,ly The great body of our army have safely. and, with but little opposition. ,•rosNed the Chickahominy river, and our advance guard is within five mite , of the city of Richmond. This the, ;he hereto- tore prevalent idea that the enemy would make a bold defence on the west hank of the river already mentioned. That they. will fight, and that desperately, for the de fence of their so called natioqal capital, there is no doubt and, to make their de fense successful they have spared neither expense nor physical means, so far as their resources will permit: Our army is now at the very Wes, so - to speak, of the Sebastopol of rebeldom, and . a few days, yea, a few hours,- may witness one of the bloodiest battles yet to be recorded in the history of modern conflicts. Yesterday there was considerable skir mishing with the enemy along the lines of our army. The firing commenced early in the morning, and was continued at ir regular intervals throughout the entire day. In the middle of the forenoon it was thought that the fighting would lead to a general engagement in the" afternoon.— General McClellan disposed of his troops in such a manner as to be prepared for any pressure on his lines. The reserve troops were brought up to support the at tacking column. A rain storm, however, set in about 11 o'clock, A. M., which for bade a general' battle. As soon as the weather clears up a battle may be - looked air, Our troops, notwithstanding the in clemency of the weather, are in good spir its; our generals are confident of success, though the process of advancing may be slow. Thus far the strategy of McClellan has been superb. He has felt his way to the very doors of Richmond with a com paratividy small loss of life. He has driven the enemy from place to place, whithersoever he would. From the front I learn that the Feurth Michigan regiment, while on a- reconnois ance yesterday, encountered a large body of the rebels in a swamp a few miles from the Chicahominy river. An engagement took place, which resulted in the-discom fiture and defeat, of the rebels, a large number of whom were WWI or wounded and taken prisoners. Om loss was not very considerable. The tight took place in a swamp, our men fighting to great dis advantage owing to this fact The Union Feeling in Portsmouth, Virginia, Is largely on the increase. The town has always been suspected by the Rebels of harboring a desire for the return of Uncle Sam's authority. In their spite towards these Union urea they 'may have conclud ed that the worst mischief they could do them would be to destroy the Navy Yard and Dry Dock. Thus the vengeance of the United States Government would fall upon the people of Portsmouth, who would he held responsible for this vandalism.— Several of the Union citizens asked us if we thought the Government would rebuild the Yard. The reply was, we hoped not, at least while the generation of vipers live who have trirnad and stung the bosom that warmed Pam into life, and pampered them with pap from the nation's treasury. The Yard may be used to some extant for repairing vessels putting into the Roads. bat We believe it is the unanimous opinion and wish of the people that it may never be reebuilt. Let it stand as it is ; let its blaclcened rains remain • unmoved, a silent but:mighty-voiced monument to tell future ages of the accursed spirit which ruled :and actuated the monstrous rebellion of ;1804;2. HON. THOMAS D'ARCY McGee, recently appointed Secretary of the Bureau of Ag riculture in the Cabinet for Lower Canada, was formerly a resident of this city, where, in conjunction with a Mr. Mitchell, he published an Irish-American weekly news paper. Owing to financial dialogues, the proprietors were obliged to suspend its publication. Mr. McGee then emigrated to Canada, where he has since remained. Raving chosen a -political- career, he has been so far successful as to reach his pres ent eminent position. As a member of the Canadian Parliament from Montreal, he frequently indulged in debate, and greatly distinguished himself. We ques tion if there is to-day a politician in Can ada commanding a larger share of public attention than the subject of this notice. Mr. McGee's successful career. r after years of hard labor, with no corresponding re sults, proves that energy and talent must in the end receive their rewarit---.V. World. The picture gallery runs the whole length of the structure. It is on the Cromwell road.side, and is of brick, with a wall thickness of about two feet: The pictures are not. hung higher than twenty feet from the floor. Therefore only the ' upper portion will be used as the gallery for modern art. The basement story is set apart for the exhibition of carriages land vehicle of all kinds. The picture gal levy is divided by a brick wall running longitudinally down the middle, whereby it is divided into • two parallel galleries, each fifty-five feet wide and thirt: -live feet high. On the opposite side of the build , ing a special wing is erected for machin ery and agricultural implements. On the ' inner aide of this department, and between the implements and the horticultural gar dens, the kitchens will be established for the various refreshment departments. In the exhibition of 1851 this was a most wretchedly mismanaged department, it' department it could be called. As for getting anything to eat or drink at all pal atable or comfortably served, it was out of the question. It was a "grab game;'' people laid hold of what was nearest, and contented themselves with that, whatever it was, and whether hot, cold or lukewarm, underdone, overdone or not done at all. Amid the din of ginger beer and lemonade corks, the clatter of plates and knives, the shouts and execrations of bewildered wait ers and exasperated customers, it was a matter of extreme difliculty to get. attended to. We hope all this will be remedied, and that more care has been or will be taken for ladies, who want to rest as well as eat during a long day's fatiguing sight. seeing. As far as architectural beauty iS concerned, the refreshment saloons show favorably. On the north side they open on the horti• cultural gardens, with their eascadee and fountains, so that the eye and the lungs will be refreshed as well as the stomach. To those of our readers who take delight in the statistics of building. we offer the fol lowing items. There are 166 round eol umns for the naves and transepts, twelve inches in diameter, connected with a like number of square pilasters: 312 eight inch round columns, and 149 twelve inch square columns for the galleries : 138 eight inch square clerestory columns and 160 ten inch square columns supporting the floor of the picture gallery, and 62 round columns for supporting the roofs of the glass courts. There are 1165 girders, 11,600 feet, of pipes, 15,000 feet of gutters, 14,000 feet of rail ings, 1000 rackets, 700 trusses and girders, 1400 shoes, and the whole is estimated to weigh 4000 tons; the entire' quantity of wrought iron used in the domes and roofs amounts to 1200 tons. In the timber work about 17,1)00 loads of wood have been used. Por the windows below the pictura galleries there are are 32 window frames It . ; feet by 13, and 6:: window frames 14; feet by 7. For the toplighting of the galleries 45.000 superficial feet of glass lave been required. The clerestory lights of the naves and tran septs have used up a mile's length of frames 25 feet high, and the courts hat e consumed thirty miles' run of sash-bars. The great building itself refai: upon a itch the foundations 'baiting been excavated down to this bed, and a base of concrete has been put in, on which brick piers, with stone slabs, each weighing upwards of a ton, have been placed to receive the iron columns. The edifice is calculated to eta dare for ages, or at all events, until that New Zealander shall contemplat e the ruins of the metropolis of England from the broken arches of London Bridge: Had Prince Albert been permitted to live to realize this magnificent erection, one of the proudest objects of his life would have been aettomplished. Tint Providence had willed otherwise. DIME AVINGS INSTITUTION, NO. 110 lIINITIIFIELD STREET. (OPPOSITE THE CUSTOM HAVRE,/ CHARTERED •BY THE LEGISLATURE. OFF IC EltSi. President VICE PRESIDENTS. Wtn.
