Corcoran not lobeßelegalised ---Riehmoed to be Deripaded. Cols. Corcoran, Wilcox, and forty other prisoners, are still detained, as two valua ble to be exchanged. All these were con fined at Richniond " in the same prison that my informers were quartoreil, and on the floor next below (holm The building was a tobacco warehouse, several stories in height. The floor occupied by the officers was was one large room, forty by one hundred feet; this their eaptorsdivided into two, by cutting off twenty-two feet from one end for a guard room, and giving the officers the balance. All'coinuiunication with the men was strictly prohibited; but the boys bored holes through the floor, and in this way managed to exchange messages. The last communication received from Colonel Corcoran and his associates was to the ef fect that they were expected to be remov ed at once to Saulsbury, North Carolina, where at last accounts, some thirteen hun dred of our soldiers were still confined, though a rumor prevailed that some of Burnside's cavalriul made a dash at that point, and liberatMli them. This ruiner was not credited, but it was thought that it,might determine the rebel authorities to place Colonel Corcoran and the others in ome safer place. At this time when preparations were first, made for their exchange all these officers were included. As we heard, however, Col. Corcoran was retained, on the ground of having papers about him designed to give us contraband information. These papers were merely sketches, made by dif ferent persons, of their various prison rooms, and sent home to their friends apartments in Charleston jail, casemates in Castle Pinckney, &e. The rebel au thorities were greatly displeased, too, be cause the Colonel found friends in Peters burg, who extended to him the hospitalities of their homes, and treated him with the respect due to a brave and true man. The current opinion at Richmond when these men left was that the rebel army would make a stand between that city and the Chicahontiny. There were no troops there of consequence; all were sent to re inforce Johnson. It was - understood that Jeff. Davis had left his capital and gone to Tuscaloosa. On the trip down the James River our men were all sent below, that they might not see the state of its de fences. They were able to discover, how- j ever, that the enemy were sinking old ea nalbonts lengthwise across the river to obstruct the channel. Jim one place only room was left there for a boat to pass.— After getting below the Monitor, which they met, the men were again allowed to go on deck. NEW GOODS Haneock's Charge at Williams burg. Correspondence of the N. V. World There burst from the woods on our right flank a battalion of rebel cavalry! There, to the right and left of the horse, three regiments of infantry supporting it. A terrible moment ! Four thousand in fantry, marching in at the same period of the battle, turned and routed our eighteen thousand at Bull Rim. But, a year l;s passed since then. Yankees hare learned how and when to fight. General Ilanenek was equal to the crisis. Forming his influttry in a minute against this sudden attack, he held them in mag nificent order, while the rebel foot and horse eameon, cheering, tiring. :11)(1 charg ing in gallant and imposing style. f tur artillery wheeled, and poured hot volleys on them as they came, and over live thou sand muskets riddled them through and . through. But they kept on—nearer— closing up, and sure of their power to sweep us before them. Thus, swifter than I can write it, until their line, now broken and irregular, was panting within two hundred yards of our own wavering columns. Then Hancock showed himself the coolest and bravest, of the brave. Taking otf his hat and using the courtly prefix of the olden time, he said: "Heady, nate! OcisHemet:, eflAkt: E!" Our whole line swept forward, as the reaper's sickle goes through the corn. Its keen edge had not yet touched the enemy, when the latter broke simultaneously and fled •in confusion to the rear of their stronghold, and the field of Williamsburg was won. NARRATIVES. &c Front the t. James Magazine. A DAY OF ARCTIC ADVENTURE . By David Walker. M. D.. F. 1.. S. M. IL I. A.. F. It. G. S., etc. Late Surgeon and Naturalist on board the Fox in search of Sir.folin Franklin. The morning of the 26th May, 1:458, with bright and lovely ; the sun was reflected from floe, iceberg, • and snow-ea pped mountains as we entered Disen I:ay. The surface of the water Wits as saaaqh as a pond—not a breath of wind--our sails loosely in their halals, and we found necessary to get up steam. Slowly we passed along the coast, threading our way among hundreds of icebergs, whose varied proportions and fantastic shapes added to the beauty of the coast scenery ; Many of these ice -mountains were aground ; others were borne , quietly by the current to be drilled through Davis' Strait to the south ward. Otte, very majestic in its appear ance, slowly passed our ship it was three hundred and eighty feet high, square topped, solid and massive, its sides. cav erned and eroded by the eeaslessly active element in which it glided, and which, like the Promethean vulture, constantly gnaw ed at its vitals. We steamed close to an other, which, as we approached, seemed to shake with sonic internal convulsion : the immense class rocked and groaned, then reared itself tip, breaking into vast fragments as it toppled over ; very fortu nately the noise it made warned. us to give it a wider berth, else we might have received damage from some of the limner- (ms pieces. This disruption was, caused by the mass having become, as the sailors say, "top-heavy,' the water having eaten away and - dissolved the base ; and the up per portion gravitating downward. the mere wave of the ship was sufficient to cx cite thti latent elements of destruction: the report of this disruption was Iflllllvl than that of a small park (d'art illery simul taneously discharged. The coast along which we passed was picturesque in the exteme. The main body of Disco Island is composed of ter raced trap of tertiary volcanic origin, its average height being about three thousand feet ; the summit is covered with the jo• kler, or the temporary fact ice-mass of the country, which breaks off at intervals of about twelve years. The sun was shining on the sides of the mountains facing the sea, which, with their dark brown masses and indentations of the deepest black; and the summit covered with glistening snow, inight not inaptly be compared to an im mense bride-cake. The upper fifteen hun dred feet or so of these mountains seemed almost perpendicular, their surface broken only by the ravines, which were occasion ally seen, or by the conical stream of det ritus which filled the small hollows. Here and there a thin, white, zigzag line showed where the sun's rays had thawed a minature cascade, which leaped and hounded down the immense wall, furrow ing the rock and aiding the elements in their disintegrating action. The lowest. portion of the coast that nearest the sea —was composed of samistone, red and yellow, with all occasional split of sand running it long way into the bar, the ac•- cunuclation of grounded iee all,l rand,•4l iceher s. Entering the Waig•ett, we crept along the shore, our pur p ose being to anchor on' that part of the coast wliere coal-beds crop out to the surfitee, about midway up the strait. The dark lines of coal contrasted well with the thicker liandsofsandstone, so that, it. was not diflirult to identif:ythe spot ; and all our spare boats and men were at (Wee sent off with pickaxes anti ,hovel; to bring on board this, to its , precious material. The ‘Vaigatt Strait is about eight miles wide, and scl u u•ates Disco Isla n d f r o m th e continent of Greenland—the island ap pearing as if it had been broken oil' and towed u few miles away from the mainland. The mountains on each side rise to a height of three thousand to four thousand feet, and are either composed of basalt or granitic rock. This strait is one of the "Anoatok" of the Eskimos, and is truly, as its name signifies, "a wind-loved spot," for the high land on each side of the nar row strait converts it into a funnel, through which the wind sweeps with dan gerous velocity.
