A Report of the Late Ittlittle...l Williamsburg to Goy. Curtin. : HARRISBURG, May 9.—The following dispatch was read by Gov. C urtin, from Washington, this afternoon: To Governor Curtin: • A New York friend, in Gen. McClellan's advance, writes me as follows: The battle of Williamsburg was a mest brilliant engagement and the victory com plete. The fighting lasted from daylight to dark. Hooker's and Smith's Divisions and parts of Casey's and Kearney's were actively engaged all day, and an equal force held in reserve. The enemy had forty thousand under Johnston, Longstreet and Early; their troops being principally from the extreme South. Our killed alicl wounded will reach eight hundred. The enemy left five hundred wounded in Wil liamsburg and retreated beyond Chicka hominy. A recounoiasance by our cavalry to that stream, found no fortifieatious and cap tured many prisoners and arms. McClellan will probably remain in Wil liamsburg two or three days. Franklin and Sedg.wick's Divisions are at West, Point. The Penn'a Regiments behaved, it s conceded . by general consent, splendidly. The 1024, 93d, 39th, 98th, 26th, 105th, ' - 7th and G3d, Penn'a Regiments and per haps others were engaged. Averall's 3d cavalry did the advance and did magnifi cently and Col. Small, who is wounded, fought well The 105th, 63d and 571 h, under .Jamison, first entered Williams burg and they will probably be detained there for duty. The 23d was first in the chief fort, and Berney's brigade was under tire all day. The enemy's fortifications at Williamsburg are most formidable. The Pennsylvanians hiVe acquitted themselves in a manner worthy of veterans. The Penn'a sick and wounded who ar rived at Now York in the Daniel Webster, have been brought by a special agent ap pointed by the Governor for that purpose to Philadelphia, where they are now in the hospital and being - kindly cared for: 14 men were too ill to be moved and are now- in charge of .a Penn'a Physician in New York City Hospital, Seamen Wanted—Meeting of the Conservative Members of Con. green. WASHINGTOY, May P.—The Navy De partment is in immediate want of seamen, and extra inducements have been offered in the way of advances, and in addition .the seamen are reaping a harvest of prize money. A single one of the recent cap tures it is estimated will yield to each sea man on the captured vessel from $1,200 to '51,400. A tine chance for the New Eng land fishermen. The following notice was read from the Clerk's. desk immediately after the ad journment of the House to-day : There will be tt meeting of the Conserr ative members of Congress in this Hall to-morrow, Saturday, the tenth, at two o'clock, r. m. All Conseri . atire members from all the States are invited to attend to counsel together as to the best means to defeat the schemes of the Abolitionists and Secessionists. The Senate, in executive session, con firmed John J. Cisco, Assistant Treasurer of the 'United States at New York ; Geo. 1). Cross, Surveyor of Customs, for Port Pawcatuck, Rhode Island ; Col. Geo. W. Taylor, of the 8,11 New Jersey Volunteers, to be a Brigadier General. The Navy Department has issued the following orders : Lieut. John L. Worden, to report to Commander Pendergrast, for the command of the iron-clad steamer New lronsides : Commander Joseph F. Green, detached from ordnance duty at Boston and to re port to Capt. Pearson for the command of the Ossipee on the eighteenth proximo ; Samuel L. Gould, jr., of Boston, appoint ed Acting Assistant Surgeon, and ordered to report to Corn. Paulding for duty ; H. H. Foster, John M'Gorran, Samuel A. Waterbury, of the Potomac flotilla, pre moted_to Acting Masters ; Christopher G. Taap, John Butler. of New York. ap pointed Acting Masters at the New York Yard. Among the promotions in Dupont's squadron, is Acting Major Win. 'Rudd, to he Acting Volunteer I.ieutenant. Union City Occupied by Rebel Cavalry. Cargo, May 9.—The enemy have fifteen hundred cavalry at Dresdep, Tenn., five hundred at Gardner Station, and it was reported last night that a company of rebel cavalry occupied Union City. Clerk of the Docotak Drowned. CAIRO, May B.—Henry Mason, Clerk of the Dacotah, fell overboard last night, near Ste. Genevieve, and is supposed to have been drowned. He resided near Pittsburgh. c. n. i. T ., LINDSEYS. BLOOD SEARCHER Those desiring the genuine article sohuld be Isreful from whom they buy. The telegraph yesterday morning an nounced the arrest of two parties, one m New York and one in Philadelphia, while attempting to pass counterfeit $lOO bills on the Allegheny Bank of this city. It seems that there was a simultaneous move meat on the part of the shovers, as we hear of a like operation in the West;' On Thursday a dispatch was received from the West inquiring if there wore any coun terfeit sloo's on the Allegheny Bank, and by yesterday's mail one of our banking houses received, from a correspondent in Chicago, Marmon sloo's on that bank, ' all counterfeit. We have examined these notes and find them a good imitation of the genuine. The centre vignette is a hunter lassoing a buffalo, on the upper left is " 100" in lathe work. on the lower left n girl ratting grain with a sickle; up per right "C," in circular lathe work: lower right, bust of a boy. The notes are I all lettered " B.'' The principal vignette is rather dark, and the lathe, work is also heavier than in the genuine. Some are signed H. Hepburn and some Wm. Bags ley, President, and all are signed. J. W. Cook, Cashier. The signatures are well done, but those familiar with them can easily detect the counterfeit. The appear ance of the notes are well calculated to deceive, and we advise all not familiar with them to refuse all $lOO hills without verification. The hank will probably call in its issue of $lOO bills. Uncle TOECVN Cabin. The old time popularity of this play and the money it brought to the cotters of Manager Foster will be generally remem bered by those familiar with theatricals. The recent success of several Eastern establishments in reproducing the drama is equally well known. The best talent has been employed in the piece and the finest scenic effects introduced, resulting 1 in full houses every night and large re -1 ceipts. I n accordance with a frequently express ed desire by manypatrons of our '' Old Drury." Manager Henderson has deter mined to reproduce "Uncle Toro" in such a manner as will make it exceedingly at tractive. The piece will be very strongly clot, with la petite Marion Smith, a beau tiful little child of six summers, as Little Eva, in which part she is highly extolled in Cincinnati and wherever she has appear- ed ; her mother. Mrs. Smith. as Topsy, • the rendition of which has already given her celebrity, and Mr. Mackay, a careful, studious Mid pleasing actor, as Uncle! Tom. The other parts are also well caste and every effort will be used to make the 1 representation faultless. The original 1 music will be revived ; Mrs. Smith will sing three songs and Little Eva two. Mrs. S. is a tine vocalist and the child has a very sweet voice, giving great effect to the songs. New scenery is being prepared expressly tor the piece and the ice scene, the conflict at the rocks and the finale will embrace I effects. entirely new anWoriginalespeci ally the latter, which as described to us will be beautiful and strikingly appropriate. The maatig.ement seem determined to spare 130 overtion to make the play worthy of ti liberal patronage and we hope it.; re vival may be a perfect success. It will be preented for the first time 011 next Mon day evening /11131 we hope then to see the ! house jammed. Arrest ofAlleged Counterfeiters On Thursday night the officers of the liiited States District Court, having good reason to know, from events transpiring during the day, that bogus coin was being "shored" nt a little candy shop on Sixth street, near Wood, kept by Mrs: Newton. who kept a disreputable house here for some time. and a man named Clarke, from Fort Wayne. Indiana. said to he an olctpl fender. A. number of counterfeit dimes, quarters and halves, similar to those pass e•d on sundry parties during the day. were found concenled in the house, chiefly in a box used ror flowers and covered with earth. The parties were both arrested, (though Mrs. Newton ;made an ineffectual eftbrt to escape by the roof) and commit ted to jail to await a hearing which was had yesterday morning before V. S. Commis sioner Bailey, resultingin the commitment of Clarke for trial and the holding to bail of the woman. A Pittabargher Drives the Reb els from a Battery. • Yesterday's dispatches record the driv ing off of a party of rebels front a battery, on Grumball's plantation. in the vicinity of Port Royal, which opened tire on the Hale, in command of Lieut. Gillis. The Hale approached steadily, and was mak ing a straight course for the battery, when the rebels fled precipitately, leaving one of the two long twenty-four pounders, which formed the battery, loaded and primed.— Lieut. Gillis landed, destroyed the guns, H and returned to the ale without having a man injured. Lieut. Gillis formerly resi ded in this city and is well known to many of our readers, who will be glad to hear of the gallant manner in which he conducted himself in this affair. AL nether Oil Refinery Destroyed. About nine o'clock on Thursday night one of the stills in the oil refinery of Brewer, Sill & Co., in the Ninth ward, near the city line, between Penn street and the river, exploded and set fire to the building, which was partially destroyed, involving a loss of between four and five hunered barrels of crude oil. The loss is about s2,ooo—no insurance. The engines were on the ground and did good service in preventing the fire from spreading. The Indian Scout. This is a new novel, from the press of T. B. Peterson & Bros., Philadelphia— one of. their fifty cent series, and is for sale here by Henry Miner, adjoining the Post Office. It is a sequel to "The Flower of the Prairie," by the same author, Gustave dimard, a Frenchman, who is, from a long residence among the Indians, pecu liarly fitted to depict such scenes as occur in the story. It is a vivid romance and will be read with avidity equal to that with which the stories of Fenimore Cooper and Mayne Reid are devoured. Grading and Paving Assess• meats. Mr. Eichbaum, City Treasurer, gives notice that all who have neglected to pay the fourth instalment of their grading and paving assessment, must do so on or be fore the first of July, otherwise they will pass into legal hands for collection, in volving considerable cost. To make :pate ters safe, parties in arrears had better settle now, or as soon hereafter as possible. Dr. Howard's Narrative. Rev. W. D. Howard, D. D., will repeat his narrative of the expedition to Pitts bargLanding. on next Monday evening, at Lafayette Hall, the ptoceeds to be devoted to paying the expenses of the sick and wounded soldiers at the Marine Hospital. The hall will doubtless be filled to its Ut most capacity, as the object is piaisewor thy, mil the lecturer one of the most pop ular divines. Cheap Hats and Caps. Wood street, near Sixth, where you will find such an assortment of all kinds silk, felt and straw, that you can• not fail in _making a thole*. His figures are very low and all articles sold by hint , of goad quality. Was Eat Abase& In noticing a robbery at Sharpsletrg, in , yesterday's house we stated that a young mart named Hanna, arrested on ::uspieiou. had been seen. near Mr. Woodward's stable, in`company with the bai-keeper Hart. We were yesterday informed that he wait not near the stable on the day named, but that while on hie way from the city to hit mother's residence, near Stewartstown, he fell in with Hart and went with him as far as the tavern, but had no further connection With the affair and knew nothing of it. Hanna, on being I arrested, at once gave bail for his appear ance and there being no evidence what ever implicating him, be was honorably discharged. Hart was also discharged, there being no proof of his guilt. Benefit. Baureasru—Dear Sir : I was aat fering for many years from hereditary hemorrhoi dal affections, of which I had the first attack in 1816. Sines that time I was regularly visited with such complaints every spring. I felt in the merit ing a most severe pain in the back, as if the lower ointe of the spine were broken or bruised, and an asthmatic pressure on the chat, Owing to my oo °ovation which keeps me all day busy out o. doom, and entirely distrusting any so called "regu lar treatment" that would have confined me to my house, I thought of following a plan of my own, which might cure me without the inconveni ence to my business attending the treatment of a "regular practitioner." So I put an Allcock's Plaster right over the groin, renewing it every fortnight; every Saturday night I took a dose o Brandreth's Pills, three or four, as 'thought neces- sary to a dome, which operated on me after getting up, three to five times in the forenoon ; on Sun day, Tuesday and Thursday nights I took one Life Addition Pill, which produced one large evacua tion. I pursued this muse for six weeks, and could attend to my business withoutintarruption; I workeVate and drank u I was eont, slept most soundly and awaked every day with less pain, and now I know nothiag of the complaint at all, so that. • I feel obliged to make you this statement for proper use, hoping that thu simple proceeding may benefit many ai it has done me.
