INDEMNITY - AGAINST LOSS Hy F'XRE. ....n -. ..,1G MONDAY MORNING; bfAY if Ignorance in Missouri.' An army correspondent writes as follows from Forsyth, Missouri • It is no uncommon thing to find people iit this region who hate not seen a paper in sawn years. It is no wonder they are easily duped by secession leaders to believe any falsehood concerning the Government. under which they live. On comingto Rolla I was struck with the fact that there was neither church nor school house in that town. From there to Springfield, a dis tance of one hundred and twenty miles, in which there are farming neighborhoods settled over twenty years, I saw but one churcha half finished building commenc ed by the Southern Methodists, and-after wards abandoned—and not a single school house. At Springfield there were indica tions of moral, religious, and intellectual culture, but from Springfield to Cassville there was not a church or school house to be seen. In Cassville, I think, there must have been some obscure place used for re ligions purposesi, but it was not visible, nor distinguishable from the other house:. From Cassville to this town no church or school house has met my'eye. In Giletia, the county seat ofStone county, thereis no such structure. In Forsyth there is the same destitution of any outward signs of religion or education. Anecdote of General Pope. Some days ago, while at his headqnar ' ters the General was approached -by a rather small, plain-looking, and entirely unassuming man, in citizen's attire. with the question: "Are you General Pope, sir "That is my name," was the answer, in rather a repelling tope. "I would like to see you, then, on a matter of business." "Call on my Adjutant, air. He will arrange any business you may have." "But I wish to have a perduna! conver sation with you." "See my adjutant ; " in an authoritative voice. "But—" "Did I not tell you to see my Adjutant? rrouble me no more, sir;" and Pope xes about walking away. "My name is Scott, General," quietly remarked the small, plain mau. "Confound you! What do I care." thundered General Pope, in a rising pas sion. "if your name is Scott. or Jones. or Jenkins, or Snooks, for matter of that': See my Adjutant. Leave rnyipresence!" "I am," continued the quiet man, in his quiet way, "the Assistant Secretary of War, and—" What: a revoltainn these Ei m pie words made in the General's appeurunce and manner! His angry, haughty, domineer ing air was dispelled in a moment; and e. flush of confusion passed over the face of the commander. "I beg your pardon, Mr. Scott. I had no idea whom I was addressing. Pray be seated. I shall be happy to grant you an interview at any time. Possibly a very close observer might have seen a faint smile on the Secretary's lip. but he said nothing. but began to un fold his business without comment; and now Mr. Scott and the General are the beet of friends. 102.9 M 25 Sigu of a Cloud Ox You should stand before Lim rind be sure he has a fine hazel eye, large nostrils. broad at and above the eyes. rather slim horns, toesstraight out before hiin : eraight in the knees, bosom full, back atruight. and wide hips.
