The want of employment is creating se rious distress in Europe. It is stated that in the manufacturing towns of. Belgium; and principally at Ghent, ever six thous and workmen are out of employ, and much suffering for want of food prevails. The town of Blackburn,England, con tains 63. 1 410 people. neary one fourth of whom are now suffering privation froin the scareityof food, clothing, beddingand fuel. When the mills are in full operation, 2A,- 352 persons are employed, but at the present time upwards of one-third. or nearly 7.000, are wholly unemployed, at a loss to the workers of about ..£6,000 .a week iu wages. In Manchester, England, ' during the last weekin March, no less than 8,969 persons, dependent upon the la bor of, them hands for their daily bread, were idle and Unable to obtain. employ ment. In many places in France also there is similar distress. A letter from Now York says The most noticeable event here to-day is the extraordinary excitement in the stock market, with a rapid and general 1 improvement in prices: The ".rush to buy" is tremendous, and everybody, for the moment, is "acting as if he had heard good news. " Tho glorious news from, New Orleans, of course, is tho impu/st to all this, joined to the conviction that, in a day or two more, the rebels on the York town peninsula will have to - "skedaddle" before General McClellan. Nobody ques tions now but that the rebellion is on its last legs, and that, before., the 4th ofJuly, the Union will be almost al "Eid as, new." Following the example of some of the Boston people, one or two enterprising speculators here have chartered kship to load with ice for the Crescent City. They have obtained permission from the govern ment, it is and expect to sail on Sat urday. No doubt they will make a nice thing of it; but the question is asked bn 'Change, "if one set of speculators Can take ire, why can't another set take medi cines, provisions and other things, for which there must be a ready market at New Orleans?" No better evidence of the enterprise of the Northern people could be adduced than the fact that one or more of the Boston and New York merchants, foreseeing the in evitable capture of the.." Crescent City " by our forces, have received permission from the authorities at Washington to sea to that port cargoes of ice for the benefit of the troops; and also, of course, to tool the parched lips and fevered brows of the Louisianians. The Northern cargoes can not hut be received with gratification by the denizens of that State, deprived aa they have been, for many months, of the lux ury. England Makes W!tr_ on the CM- An extract from a commercial letter written February 21st, at Shanghia, China, and published in the London Times, states that some English and French war vessels went up the Shanghia river one day, and tired on the rebels, killing about three hun dred. Thus it will be seen, although this Chinese rebellion has been in successful progress for years, and its leaders have un disputed Possession of a large portion of the empire, that they have taken Nankin and threatened Shanghia, and that the re bellion is one that cannot be ignored; still England not only refuses to recognize them, but with.her ally makes war upon them to drive them back from one of the sites of her profitable oriental trade. As we re marked on the recent occasion, referring to the same subject, England, in this mat ter of recognizing rebels, graduates her principle in exact proportion to her inter est. NEW GOODS I Some Good Effects of the Flood on the Mines. The San Juan Press remarke The opinion is generally entertained that the coming summer will be a prosperous one •imong the miners in placer diggings. The conviction is derived from the fact that the late floods have set in motion vast deposits of tailings and loose earthi whiCh have been swept onward toward the ocean, leaving their auriferous wealth scattered along the beds of the water courses to reward the miner for his delving labore.—San Francisco Bulletin. • Decease of a Man of Note.
