Latest Ball Dresh of Eugenie Our lady readers will he interested in this description of one of the latest ball dresses worn by the Empress Eugenie: A rube of white tulle, covered with trimmings up to the knees, looking like a veritable cloud. with diamonds scattered . all over it. The sash was not worn round the waist, hut as a scarf. The lower part of the bud) was of sky blue. with wide points before and behind, and covered with diamonds. Mite velvet bows were placed on the shoulder withaigraffesof diamonds. The necklace of diamonds upon blue vel vet. rather close round the throat. The coiffure was a bow of blue velvet, upon which went diamond wheat-ears: at the sides, leaves of the same color as the bow, forming a half wreath ; in the Midst. of these leaves were pendants,..which pro duced a charming and brilliant effect.-- Some earls descended front the back hair, which \vas fastened by a comb with dia monds, forming a diadem. Diamonds oti velvet of 'lda shade lied not been seen before, but the effect produced was very beautiful. The sash worn as a scarf is called ceinture liayadere. It is very nar row. draped at the hack of the body, and tied in a how at the front. 30 $lOO . 1 75 5 00 12 00 Is 00 ,`Knights of the Golden Circle." It : It appears t hat t his I ; olden circle is com posed of a gang of plunderers who have been engaged in robbing the Treasury since the advent of the present administration.. In the rourse of a single year they hare ucceeded in abstracting funds to the amount of over sixty millions of dollars, as much as the ordinary annual expenses of the Government during th.• last Adminis tration. Hence they are called, • • knights of the Garien Cirele. — A number t.flaella l;ers have been initiated into this °trims:ma oblo order from this part of the State. Floyd's Defense lien. John B. Fiord has published a long defense of his course at Fort fonelsan. In some general remarks he says: I eensidered the place ill-chosen, out of position, and entirely indefensible by any reinforcements which could Is brought there to its support. It had but thirteen guns. and it turned out but three of these were effective against iron-clad steamers.. I thought the force already there sufficient for sacrifice, as well as enough to hold the place until Bowling Green could be eraeu ated with its supplies and munitions of war. This I supposed to he the main ob ject of the movement t, Donelson. and the only !tood that could be effected by desper ately holding that post with the entirely inadequate mean- in hand for the defense of the Cumberland and Tennessee rivers. With a less force than r,0.0 0 men, the po sition at Fort Donelson was. in my judg ment, quite untenable. amyl even with that force it could have been held for only a short time, unless a force of '20,000 m en were supporting it at Clarksville. and '25.- oko more at least had Leen stationed at Nashville. "Contrabands" at the North. The Rochesh•r N. 1.1 Cnion. of :.4at • urday. says: Just about these days there seems to Itr quite an influx of strange colored persons in our city. lilaeh is telling some large story about, his escape from slavery and his sufferings. These persons iiome here expecting to he taken care of by .` white folks," and. disappointed in that expecta tion, resort to means for a living not coun tenanced in this community. Two or three of the species were before the police mag istrate this morning for vagrancy and com mitting petit larcenies, and were summa rily disposed of Lc sending them to the penitentiary. They are only placed where they can earn their living. and not sponge it out of citizens. Stevens and Cameron Thaddeus Stevens is a genuine Aboli tionist ; like the Gazelle, he cares not what a public man does, provided he is sound on the main issue. Being crazy on the slavery question and u 1 to the elbows in the public treasury, Mr. Stevens face tiously denominates " supporting one's country." The gentleman the other day in reply to Mr. Dawes. of Massachusetts, stated that— ' • He, with some Of his colleagues, had protdsted against the appointment of Cam eron, though the protest was not of much avail. Afterwards, Cameron took a dif ferent course from what they expected, and among other things, wrote the remark able words to Gen. Sherman : "You will assure all persons held to involuntary labor who may be received in the service of the Government, that they will, under no cir cumstances, be again reduced to their for mer condition, unless they choose to re turn." And all will remember how his report was emasculated then. He (Mr. Stevens) felt proud of the man he bad for-, merly opposed,. and declared he would sup.: port him. Alt. N 0.6 Wood Ares Lit an FRIDAY MORNING' MAY 2 seq. EUROPEAN GOSSIP Her' is an anecdote of a confidence maul told by Monsieur Pasquier, who was a Prefect of Police in Paris under the first Emperor : A magnificent carriage drove up. one due, to the door of a rich jeweler in Paris, and a well-looking, important and not over-dressed gentleman alighted from it. He said that he wanted a complete wed ding pnotre. consisting of a lady's set of diamond ornaments, the price limited to •kO,OOO francs, equal to $40,000. From several designs, which he examined with the evidently practiced eye of a connois seur, he selected ,one,. which he desired might be executed within five days, and insisted on leaving'4,ooo francs with the. jeweler as a deposit. 'He also selected a ring, worth 120 francs, which he begged might be sent to him : the next day., giving his address as Prince Gargarin, Hotel Hollande, flue de la Paix, which was a more fashionable house in 1805 than it is in 3862. The jeweler's messenger called at the appointed time, and was shown into an apartment in the second story. There were tire or six liveried lackeys in the ante-chamber, one of whom escorted him to the Prince, who received and examined the ring, paid for it and presented ten francs to the messenger, who returned home, joyfully congratulating the jeweler on having so wealthy and liberal a cus tomer. " On the fifth dav, as agreed, the jewel er carried home the diamonds and found the Prince in his study, sitting before his cylindrical secretaire. His Highrtess minutely inspected the jewels witli . st glass. and suddenly one of the valets announced • Prince Dolgorouki. 'Ahl my brother. in law,' exclaimed his Highness. • I do not wish him to see the present with which I intend surprising his sister. Re quest him to stay in the drawing-room, and I will immediately join him. ' • • T.iuching the table. the cylinder moved and the secretaire closed. The diamonds were within it—but on the table was as open box filled with plump leather bags, and numerous roleaux of Louis were hud dled together confusedly. On his arrival, the jeweler had noticed all this treasure, and more especially alarge Russia leather port-folio, well lined with bank -notes, the rough edges of which were visible. '• The 'Prince quitted the room. saying that he would . immed'iately' . return. The polite. jeweler begged hint not to hurry himself. Twenty minutes elapsed, which seemed like three Louis to the jeweler, over whom a. 'vague apprehension crept. The dour opened—Oh. h eri , i s hi s . Hi g h• ness. he thought. 2%:0. It was the master of the hotel, who asked if he was waiting for any one. For the return of Prince Gargarin.• the jeweler answered. • I have just sold him a set of diamonds f'or 200.000 francs. Are you his secretary?' The maitre (I . ',lel shook his head and sadly said, • I am his dupe, and so are von, 'I suppose. • • Impossible The diamonds are shut up in that seeretaire. Besides. look at all this money. ' Alas, the leathern bag which ht• seized was tilled with nails. The roleaux were of wood. The Russian leather portfolio con• tained scraps of waste paper.- nowever, there was one consolation--the diamonds were sate. A locksmith was sent for-- the seeretaire optned,•xnd found—empty It stood flush up against a wall, in which a bole had been made. and, there being a corresponding hole in the back of the see rewire. the jewels had readily been re moved into the next room. The jeweler. as lie well might be, was in despair. The ma , ter of the hotel.had been swindled: All the servants were his except the valet de ehambre. who was the confederate of the Prince. They had decamped, without suspicion, at the door of the hotel. All efforts to discover them were ineffectual.
