Theycaptured two of our full reg iments, and took hundreds oftents and camp equipments; they also took possession of the camp, with tents, cooking fixings, &c.; of our two first battalions. But by this time the gun boats came up froth below and threw some shells into their ranks, which soon made them scatter. By this time we got our forces collected and soon took position against them and held them at bay till evening on Sunday, when the firing ceased for the night, to bury the dead. They had very little the advantage of that day. The enemy were reinforced during the night. We also, with great difficulty, re ceived reinforcements, as the rebels had burnt all the bridges in the vicinity of the battalion lam in. Buell's forces had not been able to cross the river at that. time. Early Monday morning they attacked our forces with tea-fold fury, but all to no pur pose, for the Yanked buys bravely resisted their charges and held them in check for two hours, during which time not a foot of ground was gained on either side, until two Indiana and the Eighth Missouri Regi ment were brought forward to support our left wing, who gave them some touches of Zouave drill which the rebels were not so well posted in. They would lire—then lay down ou their bellies—then load crawl vg and fire again, until they got sufficier morning. WM, F. JOHNSTON ly near the ereni and theii sprung up am charged on them and took two of their bat teries. Buell, by this time, Caine across the river with his forces and charged on their centre and cut his way through their ranks. It was then about two o'clock; the rebels fled in confusion, leaving their dead and. wounded, with everything behind 'them in .perfect confusion. Then came our turn—the cavalry started in pursuit, and would soon have cut them to pieces bad they not hoisted the white flay. It wail a hard fought battle and one 1 shall long remember, being my first, and God grant that I may never witness another sudh, for when we were supporting the right wing the six-pounders and bullets flew like hail, but my brother and myself came out unhurt: The loss on the rebel side is very great. Our loss is not equal to theirs, but it is impossible asyet to form an accurate idea. Monday evening I passed over the bat tle field. What a horrible sight ! You could walk hundreds of yards on the bodies of dead rebels without touching the ground. Their wounded, scattered over the field, left to take care of themselves; many would beg to be shot, others pleading for water, water The very sight bore evidence of a desperate conflict. Tuesday we were again ordered out on skirmish, in which Col. Dickey's Illinois Cavalry were in the lead, when we encountered about six hundred rebel cav alry, who had driven in our infantry pick etsi killing many. But when our cavalry charged on them they could not ‘•stand the pressure," and fled. For four miles it was nip and tuck t when our progress was checked by them tearing down a bridge, which pre vented further pursuit. If thisis Southern "chivalry" it won't compare with that of Yankeedoni. On ourreturn, the road was strewed with tons of Hour and meat, drugs, surgical instruments, tents, camp fixings, S - c.. The dead and the dying were to be seep for miles,.many .of whom had been thrown from their wagons in their Bight. We also passed live Secesh hospitals filled with sick, deserted, and the suffering in mates left to die uncared for, such must have been the panic. - Such scenes as we beheld , l will not attempt to describe. The prisoners inform us that Beaure gard, the day before the battle, marshaled his 'army out into battalions and swore them "to drive our army into the Tennes see 'River or.die in the effort." They also think that a victory -at Corinth will wind up the fighting in Tennessee. E. A. B. P. am writing these lines- on a sick man's cot, on Secesh paper, which I found in their camp after the battle.
