The copious issues of small bills by our State banks has opened a wide field for the ingenuity of counterfeiters, who seem to be almost daily adding to the stock of bo gus paper money in circulation. Under the circumstances the public, especially those remote from large cities. who do nut receive daily information of new frauds. cannot be too cautious in receiving bank notes. It is. of course. the strictly consei k-ntious who surfer most by the circulation of counterfeit bills, those who, having been victimized by one, prefer pocketing the toss to passing it upon a neighbor. while the less scrupulous and some who profess I honesty, makeit a point to lose nothing by had money.and pass genuine and spurious notes indifferently, considering them '•good us long as they pass," paying their out it' I returned, again and again. until they can- not be traced to them. This class is re moved but slightly from the counterfeiter in guilt, and some safe-guard against them should be employed. If every person re ceiving a suspicious bill wontd mark the name of the person from whom he receives it on the back, it would, in most cases, find its way back to the person who first passed it. The country is flooded with I counterfeit small bills and all with which • the receiver is not thoroughly familiar, should he closely scrutinized. . For the Daily Pelt. ; Boots aged Shoes. De.. S. steamer, Cambridge arrived here this morning from the blockade off Beaufort. N. C., which she left on Sunday evening. The rebel steamer Nashville escaped from the harbor on Wednesday night the 18th inst., having run the blockade. The only U. S. vessels off this place were the Cambridge and Bark Gemsbok sailing vt•ssels. The blockading vessels had news of the capture of Newbern and were on the look out for the Nashville, but they were not numerous enough to prevent her escape. The Gemsbok just saw the Nashville and immediately telegraphed to the Cambridge that she was coming out. The latter fol lowed her and fired a number of shots, but the superior speed of the Nashville soon nut her at a safe distance. Two shots i trom the Cambridge are supposed to have struck the Nashville.
