The private °slender of yesterday contained a large number of bills. There were several passed end others disposed of in a manner that will not 8031 trouble !he 80101:18, inasmuch as they aro in tlitt position where the Irishman found his din ner, not in reach lust now. hs following will suffice for, yoor People: "An del relative to the distribution of the proceeds of Sheriff Sales on real estate in the County of Alle gheny." This bill was on second reading and postponed, inasmuch as it WAS declared a public bill. .Whitt matter did that make, when it was be fore the aseembled wisdom; when it was put on second reading they could, with all propriety, I tr. it on Anal passage. As to the merits and demerits of the bill I have nott.ing to do. I merely men tion this flat to stilly how easily legislation can be baffled. Tae bill goes over. A stipplement to an act approved the 9th day of April A. D. 1859, entitled "An Act to incorporate the Pittsburgh and East Liberty Passenger Rail way Company." This came up ea an objected bill, and on motion then was postponed; doubtful if it can again be reached this session. What is there wrong that one of your own Representatives should make such a motion? The special orders for to-day were several, but one Only was resc.hed, this being the very important act tio repeal the act of last session, known as :he commutation of the Tonnage tax. There were several speeches made pro and con. gr. Maine opened for the repeal in a rather lengthy and forcible speech. 1/e Was followed by Ms. Scott, in opposition, in a strong, cogent and argumentative speech in support of the act as it stands. All eyes ware directed to the seat of your own distinguished and member. 'lbis gentleman rose and made but a few brief remarks, when he offered to strike out the enacting clause and Insert the following as asubstitute for the bill; Ab sot to repel the act for the commutation of Tonnage duties, approved March 7, 1881. A short titre ince, while the Fourteenth' Regiment Now , York Volunteers, 0616nel Mc- Quade, were on picket duty near Hall's 11i11, 1 Virginia, a number of the mem bers of the regiment went outside the lines, to a house within range of the , gunsof the rebel pickets. The house belonged to an old Secessionist, who Ltd deserted is from fear of being ar rested by the Union men, as it was knonvn that he had been guilty of overt acts' of treason. Upon entering the hot+ it was found that the furniture had; been left, and one of the soldiers, a rehident of this county, perceiving an old-looking book, examined it, and found that it was a record of the Revo% lutiOnary war. It proved to be the order book of General Washington, in ma 'i nscript, commencing March, 1776, au, reaching through several years. It o ntains general orders, special or_ dors, details of officers, court-martin's, plain of battles, official reports of en gagements, &c.
