By Yesterday's Telegram F U R THER PARTICULARS FROM FORT DONELSON. AN ACCOUNT OF THE IAITLE Terrible Slaughter in (lair Ranks ! -!, ! A BLOODY BATTLE THE KILLED AND WOUNDED EXCITING DETAILS. CHIQAOO, February —The following is an account of Saturday's 4lghting at Fort Donelson: On Saturday morning the battle was renewed with tthusnal vigor. arid deter mination. The Bth, 18th, 20th and 21st Illinois regiments occupied a position above the fort. bey were about prepar ing a little food when the rebels opened on them a fire of musketry. A line of battle at once was formed, and the storm of leaden hail was returned, perceptiblythin ning the rebel ranks. The rebels, from their advantageous positions, showered upon our ranks most murderous volleys of musketry, grape and cannister, killing and wounding our men almost by com panies at every round; yet every man stood his ground. Bravely, determino;aly and without flinching tnesb four regiments held their ground, dealing death, dying and fighting against appalling odds, and in the face of every disadvantage. Tce 18th regiment seems to have resisted the severest storm. Against their ranks the ,rebels directed their heaviest fire. but in. stead of falling back they advanced to the very face of the enemy, and there stood in the very jaws of death, with scarcely any prospect that a single one would scape For three hours 'these regiments, num bering scarcely three thousand men, held their ground against the whole rebel garri. son. At one time the 18th being partially franked, was exposed to a cross fire c‘f b.,th musketry and artillery, but our right wing securing the rebel's left, at once and re lieved them. At this critical moment Col. Lawler fell. Oapt. Bush, acting Lieutenant OLlonel, took command, but was soon wounded. Capt. Oronse was shot dead; Capt. Lawler was mortally wounded; Lieuts Maneford and Thompson killed ; Capt. , . Dillon and Wilson and Licuts Seliy and Scanlon wounded; so that the daring Egypticn giment stood before an tverwhelining foe almost without officers The dead and wounded fell in heaps; companies were bereft of Captains and Lieutenants, and Lieutenants and Captains almost bereft of companies. The other three regim uta did their duty nobly. Ct lonels Oglesby. Marsh and Logan .dastied along the rant*, waving their .hats end cheering their men on to the conflict. "Suffer death, men." crhd Login, 'Cat -dishonor, never:, Stand firm." And well they heeded him. Many fell dead and wounded; among the latter were Logan and Lieut. Gol. White. Og.lesby'e and Marsh's regiments fought desperately, lofting, like other regiments an undue proportion of officers. Col. Oglesby die. played a coolness and courage that have elicited the highest praise, and served well in s'lmulating hie men, Never, perhaps, on the American Con. tinent, bee a more bloody battle been An officer, who participated and was wounded in the fight, says the scene beg gars descrtption. So thickly, was the bat, tie field strewn with the dead and wound ed - that he could have traveled ackia4uf it, taking almost every step upon a prostrate body. The rebels fought with desperation, their artillerists using theft ptecei with most earful effect. On either side could be .tis , voices of, those in command awe - ring on their men. The four Illinois regiments held their ground' full three hours. Nearly one%third had been killed or wounded, yet the bal. ancestood firm. Finally, reinforcements arrived and for an hour the slaughter con tinued. About 4 o'clock our right wing turned their left, and the rebels fell back Into their fortifications, and our flag wal plant, , ed,upon the position occupied by their left wing and for the time the slaughter Ceased. Dresser' , s and Schwartz's batteries were CaPtured''during tbe action, but the 18A Illinois, With clubbed muskets, recovered Dresser'z, while the 81st soon recovered S.iftwaitz's. CHICAGO, February 17.—A special Fort Doneloon dispatch to the Times, says the forces viers abqut equal in numbers. but the rebels had all the advantage of poei tion, Wing Weft ficrtified on two immense hilla t with their fort'near the river. 0 ,- , a lower piece of ground from the fort, their intrenchments, rifie i pits, And . lbattis extended up thepriver, behind the town of Dover. It sounds improbable, certainly, but no one can say it is im possible. What is there to prevent a lady, if she is so inclined, from But that would - 'sphil the story. And there is no law of nature, I suppose, to restrain a man, who is so devoid of gentlemanly feeling as be is . Bnt that would tell you what is corn. jug. It is no good saying be was in toxicated, because I defy you to get drunk un sherry and soda-water; and to lay it to the heat of the season is absurd, for it was a remarkable cool evening for August No ! Jenkyns is a man who has had some strange experiences, and this was not the least strange among them. Still, mind, I will not guarantee the truth of this; though, by the way, you don't often find a man tell the same tale twice exactly in the same way if it is not true, and I have heard him tell this twice. The first time was at a dinner at Lord Well! it does not matter where. It is some times nut advisable to mention proper names. I don't think mentioning this would'do any harm, though—at a din ner at Lord's cricket ground, and the second time was on the occasion of which I am speaking, when I found him drinking sherry and soda -water and smoking cheroots with three officers of marines, one of them with five gloves lady's six-and a-half) and a withered rose before him, was telling how—"af ter leading me on this way, after gain ing my affections in this trecherous man ner, by Jove ! she throws me over and marries Blubber " "It's like the sea," says the second "It's woman that sejniees all man kind," said the third marine. It rewinds me of what once happen ed to myself," said Jenkyus; 'you know the story," he continued, turning to me. "So just order yourself some sherry and soda-water; ah ! and while you are about it just order some for me too, and you can pay for both when they come; then I shan't be put out. Paying for anything always puts me out. Thank you! I'll try one of your segars. Well, gentlemen," turning to the marines, "some time ago, I was staying with Sir George P—, P— House, P— shit e. Great numbers of people . there —all kinds of amusements going on.— Driving, riding, ft , hing, shooting, every thing, in fact. Sir George's daughter, Fanny, was often my oomplution in these expeditions, and I was consider ably strn k with her. For she was a girl to whom the stunning epithet 'stun ning, applies better than any other that lam acquainted with. She could ride like Nimrod, she amid drive like John, she could row like Charon, she could dance like Terpsichore, she could run like Diana, she walked like Juno, and she looked like Venus. I've even seen her smoke." "One good point in her character, at any rate," said the first marine. "Just like the sex !" said the second marine "Ah ! she was a stunner," continued Jenkyns, "you should have heard that girl w histle, and laugh—you should have heard her laugh. She was truly a de,. lightful companion. We rode togeth er, drove together, fished together, walked together, danced together, sang together; I called her Fanny, and she called me Tom. All this could have but one termination, you knew I fell in love with her, and determined to take the first opportunity to propose. Boone day, when we were out togeth er fishing on the lake, I went down on my knees among the gudgeons, seized her hand, pressed to my waistcoat, and in burning accents entreated her to be my wife. "Don't be a fool 1" she said "Now drop it, do! and put me a fresh worm "Oh Fanny," I exclaimed, "don't talk about. worms when marriage is in question. Only say—" "I tell you what it is now," she re plied angrily, "If you don't drop it, I'll pitch you out of the boat " "Gentlemen," said Jenkyns, with strong emotion, "I did drop it, and I give' you my word of honor, with a shove she sent me flying into the water then seising the sculls, with a stroke or two she put several yards between us, and burst into a fit of laughter that fortunately prevented her from going, any-further. I swam up and climbed into the boat.. genkyus,' said I to myself, -4-Revii* I If.civenge I' I dia. guided my feelings. I laughed—hide ous mockery of mirth—l laughed. Pulled to the bank, went to the house, and changed my clothes. When I ap. peered at the table, I perceived that every one had been informed of my ducking--universal laughter greeted me. During dinner Fanny repeatedly whispered to her neighbor, and glanced at me. Smothered laughter invariably followed. 'Jenkyns,' said I, 'Revenged' The opportunity soon offered. There was to be a balloon ascension from tie lawn, and Fanny had tormented her father into letting her asoend ; with the r.ronaut.
