JAMES ;;IN,BARRa EDITOR AND PRO PR IP TO B , o: MAT 33 > B. Vl:oodruit Ps Improved Steeping Oar We yesterday had the pleasure of ex amining and testing the comfort of this new rilaread vehicle, which is about to be placed on the Pittsburgh. Port Wayne and Chicago Railway. If we were to speak from our own imperfect knowledge of mechanical contrivances, we would say that this new car was perfect; but not knowing what the ingenuity of man may achieve, and taking it for granted that pro gress to- yet to work out further wonders, and that better and more convenient things in this department are yet in store for the world, we will only say that Woodruff 's improved oar is the best invention of th e kind that the traveling public has yet been favored with. This oar is furnished with state rooms, "fore and aft," as the sailors would say, and every imaginable disposition of the seats and beds is made that can contribute to the ease and oomfoi t of the passengers. - The ventilation is excellent, supplied from register's placed in each space occupied by four passengers, and from windows on the top of the car, which are so arranged as to permit the escape of foal air, without ad milting the cinders and dirt. The regis ters, too, are so arranged as to supply hot air in the winter and cold air at seasons when it may be preferred. The trucks on which this comfortable structure is carried along, are of the most improved construction, and ride as steadily and smoothly as would seem to be posai ble. _ Altogether, the improved sleeping oar is a meat desirable institution, and deserves more extended notice than we are able to bestow upon it today. The migratory public need n.) longer be weary in making their journeys, and we congratulate them (we may say envy them, for we scarcely ever travel)upon the great addition to their comfort which this new vehicle affords. The Case of Captains McHenry and Chapman. A correspondent of the Philadelphia North American gives the following version of the attempt to shoot Gen. Montgomery, at Alexandria. on Saturday last "It appears that a shot was fired in a house of bad repute about half-psuit eleven o'clock. Lieutenant Colonel Joseph A. McLean, Oaptain J. Reeside White and Lieutenant Hergeebeimer, with a guard. entered the house, and found two Captains of the Sixty-Third Pennsylvania volun teers, drunk. After considerable trouble, the guard succeeded in getting them into the street, when one of them backed him felt into the street, alongside of the house, Ind swore he would kill the officer or any of the guard who would attempt to arrest him. Just at this time Gen. Montgomery came along, and finding how matters stood, called on the guard to do their duty. One of them at this time raised his pistol and pointed it towards the General. Lieuten ant Colonel McLean struck and grappled the arm of the drunken man, but he sue. ceded in dircharging two loads of his re. :elver at the General, fortunately without effect. The Lieutenant Colonel threw him across the steps, the Captain still main taining tee grasp of the pistol, when Capt. White struck him a severe blow across the head with the barrel of his revolver, w hi 26 compelled him to relinquish his hold on the pistol. He jumped up and showed fight, when one of the gum d pierced him with his bayonet. Even after this, in con veying the drunken Captain to the Pro. Yost Marshal's office, the guard was com• puled to knock him down eight or ten times. Arrived at the guard house his wounds were dressed by Assistant Surgeon Mitchell of the 88th Pennsylvania. Gen. Jamison, in whose brigade they belonged, was tele. , graphed to, ani the next morning an am. balance, with a guard, was sent in and took ehar_ge of both of them as prisoners. The wounded one was badly hart, the bayonet piercing his left lung." STRANGE ExrLesion ON Flirra STREET. —Yesterday afternoon the vicinity of Fifth street and Market alley was startled from its propriety by a loud explosion emana, tang from the sewing machine agency of Greyer da - Baker,at the corner named. Mr. Obatoney, one of the firm of Chatoney Walter, ban been examining the cones. pondence of the firm and tearing up old letters. When done he threw a large pile of fragments of paper into the stove and had just returned to his seat when a loud and violent explosion took place, throw, log him from his chair to the floor, but doing him no injury. The stove was up. set and the front and corner windows of the staid, !Uttered top wee and the sash, broken'. No further injury was done and $lOO-will repair the damage. The cause of the explosion cannot be explained; there eves no powder or other substance among the paperand the only solution of the mysterris that gas was generated in the stow) which ignited, with the result given above: 'lt is possible, however, that a gas birder - may have ben left in such a con? dition as to - permit the escape of gas Ndhich ignited when the atmosphere became charged. Mr. Hale, of New Hampshire, called up the resolution in regard to Ward H. The case of Senator Bright was then taken up, Mr. Davis, of Ky.,reeUmed his remarks. He said that treason was the greatest of crimes. It involves the whole nation in its consequences. Yet, the men who aro now engaged in treason, boldly confront honest men. There has been to much leniency show. These men ought to be abhorred as the vilest of culprits. Was not Benedict Arnold a traitor Suppose that the Senator from Indiana had been a member of the Continental Congress, and suppose that after Arnold had been detect ed in hie treason, the Senator had written such a letter to Arnold as he has now written to Jeff. Davis. In that day of purity and patriotism, would he not have been expelled from the Senate ? Is Jeff. Davis lees a traitor than Arnold was? Was not Aaron Burr ineffably less a traitor than Jeff. Davis? Yet the Senate expelled Smith of South Carolina for tdo intimate relations w th Aaron Burr., The Senator from Indiana allows that he has not changed his opinions, and he will not. If the Senator holds opinions opposed to the coercive measures to sub- due the rebels and will not vote for any measures to support the government he ought to have resigned his position here, but as he has not done that, it must be the duty of the Senate to expel such a member. Latest Account ofthe Battle at Somerset. CINCINNATI, Jan. 23 —The Somerset correspondent of the Timca says that at seven o'clock on Sunday morning the ene• my drove in the pickets of the 10. h Indi ana, stationed at the forks of the road, eight miles from SomersE.t. The 104 t were drawn up in line and moved into the woods, where they were met by the enemy 6,000 strcng, who instantly opened upon them. Gan. Thomas immediately ordered up the 9th Ohio, the 21 Minnesota and the 4th Kentucky to the support of the 10th Indiana, the latter holding the enemy in check nearly half an hour before being reinforced. The First and Second Tennemee were ordered ap on the right wing for the pur pose of outflanking the enemy, Standart's and Whitmore's batteries in the meantime shelling the enemy in the woods. After being engaged for nearly two hours, the Ninth Ohio, Second blinn.,made a deeper. ate bayonet oharge upon the enemy --drove them from the woods, c3mpletely routing them, and pursuing them to their en trenchments. At the hest of the engage men., Oapt. Kinney, ordered one section of his battery within s sty yards of the enemy's line and opened a deadly fire upon them, which added greatly to the success of the day. Our advance arrived within sight of the enemy's entrenchments one hour before dark, and opened upon them with shot and shell. Night closing in put a stop to further demonstrations. At daylight next morning, a steamboat wee observed trans., porting troops across the Cumberland. Whitmore's battery of Parrott guns brought to bear on the boat, Which, in a few minutes afterwards, was in flames, The 10th Kentucky and 14th Ohio were ordered forward by Gen. l'aomesto ad.", vanes on the enemy's breastworks. Mov. ing up in line of bottle and scaling the entrenchments, they found the camp en% tirely deserted, and everything standing as when occupied by the enemy. Houses, tents, horses, mules, wagons, baggage, cannon, ammunition and fire arms were found in perfect preservation. The enemy's forces in the attack were led by Critten. den and Zollicoffer, and were 8000 strong. The Federal forces in the fight did not ex ceed 3000. =ll EDITION. LATEST. BY TELEGRAPH. The Morning Poet thinks it diminishes the hope of peace and that the Washing, ton government will propose a compro. miss, bat which will not for a moment be entertained. The Times asks why the decision should be delayed if favorable for peace and says that the immeiiate surrender of Mason and Slidell would have been a greater blow to the Confederates than a victory on the Potomac and worth millions to the Federal exchecquer.
