PITTSBURGH POW. THURSDAY, JANUARY 16. THE PRESS ON THE IaRREOVAL OF GEN. CAMESON. The Newyork papers express a vari ety of opibione on the causes of General Cameron's retiring from the Cabinet.— The extreme Abolitionists attribute the f‘ --- 43eparalio n to the General's opinions up " on the slavery question / intimating that he has been made a victim to his princi ples. This is the key to the onslaught which the President will have to encoun ter from these extreme fanatics. Cam• eron will now supplant Fremont in their affections, at d become the centre around which the Abolition legions will assemble. Ihe idea of Gen. Camerott allowing himself to become a victim to his prin ciples', is rather too much for even Abo litionists to credit. It has been very well established in the last ten years that he has no political principles. He has boxed the compass, belonging to every political organization in the country, not in pursuit of principle, but of office.— The conception of such adventurers sac rificing themselves for their principles, is % too much for every this day of profligacy and impudence. The Times, Speaking of the change in the Cabinet, eat's: "It has b e en evident that the general policy of the Administration, and the opinions of the Secretary of War, ' were irreconcilable. Mr. Cfamercin, represent. tag in his Cabinet, the least radical of all the loyal States, has from the first been satisfied of the identity of the rebellion with Slavery, and fibs been persuaded that the suppression of h- th is essential to the restoration of the Union and the future Fence of the Republic. These views he hasleio.-nff occasion of alto eating. * .Mr.--Lincoln, born in a slaveholding corn. =unity, and familiar with the institution, believes that it may be perpetuated with. ontlszaro to the Union. He considers tbe Border States entitled to every pont ble guarantee for the indus'mal system they, have inherited, and is willing to test theeessibility of restoring the status in quo with the least posaiele disturbance to the interests of those States." 4111:he Tribune tells us that if a bomb -11 had fallen into the Senate Chan_ bar, it would not have produced a great er sensation than did the President's nomination of Mr. Stanton to the office of Secretary o! War: "It was feu lo be the edema condemns. tion by the Administratio n and the regu - -1 r army, of the policy of emancipation and arming the slaves of rebels, so strong. ly recommsnded in the report of the Sec. retary of War. „Senators saw in it an open issue with the anti slavery feeling of the North and West, and shrank from the prospect of evils se suddenly opened to the eyes of men already weary with wieching this war. No vote was taken on these uni expected nominatiot a, although Senator Sumner promptly moved their confirma tion. They were laid over till to-day, with the silent scqui•scence that wishes to measure a danger before grappling with it. Mr. Cameron was nominated by the Free ident as Minister to Russia, as a testinsoni, al of his personal regard and a recognition of the vs'u, of his great services as Secre tar? of War. If the acceptance of this =hal.= should be into-preted by the pubs lie as a compromise of his antiolsvery views, there can be no doubt that Mr Cameron w uld unhesitatingly decline it," The Expresa, commenting upon the above; says that this is the Tuba, 'e view of the change proposed, and the confi dente it manifests towards "Mr. Camer on's anti-slavery views" is very refreshing indesd Up to the time Mr. Cameron went into the Cabinet, and through his whole term in the Senate, he was.,,cisief among the compromiseta-suid always j° - to be uponfood terms with con •restive '6.44.4e.t.rn men, Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Cameron resolved to part be cause they agreed neither upon genera/ principles nor upon details." the World thinks the resignation the most important political event since the war, and says : "There is every variety of speculation as to the probe/ le cattail of Gen, Cameron's retiring from the cabinet, the most general one being that he could not agree with the President and Gen, littClellan as to the policy of conducting the war. H. spent the evening at the residence of Colonel Forney, where he met many of his old political-friends " "It will be cot strued by the country as indicating the firm purpose of the Presi -4%3.0; adhe-e to the Conservative policy -he hair repeatedly avowed, and thus far . =insistently maintained, relative,- to the object of the war." "There was a want of harmony between the. President and the Secretary of War. The preparation by the letter of a report, di' Intended to be,stitimitted to Congress, in which he advOcated a policy which the President wee known to disapprove ; his sending copies of it to the principal cities for the use of the press before the President had- seen it or was tettfile anquainted with Its contents; its subicident recall by Mr. Lincoln, and modification by his direction, betokened a difference which ought not to , exist between a cabinet officer and his en. parlor at a time when Unity in the execs. tive counsels seemed so important to the , T, , sticcess of the country. The Evening Polt cazinot believe that ' g iheAeperation . took place because of any • . - 04isagftercient upon the Slavery question, :;Oititid cooly adds Glut— "There is no doubt that the immense sums expendlel under *authority of the War Department, while it has been in lir. Tuey have behaved like thieves at a great fire, making the calamity and the lois greater by carrying off what they could lay their hands oa. Stan ton to the United States Cabinet, is the most important event that has occurred since the rebellion broke out. It demon strates that the President has made up his mind not to be driven from his pur pose to save the Union if possible, in order to gratify mere partizan Abolition ists. His going outside of his party for a Cabinet officer, looks as if country and not party was occupying his thoughts.— When the Chicago platform was con struoted we had no rebellion to contend with, and all liberal and patriotic citizens will rejoice that the President has shown himself above par y in the compre hension of his entire country. Mr. Stanton, the new minister of war, is well known throughout the country ; his connection with the closing scenes of Mr. Buchanan's administration, gave him a national reputation, and made for him a fame which will hereafter create an important page in our country's his tory. His energy, determination, patri otism and pluck, enabled him to success fully confront the traitors in the Cabinet and force them to resign positions which they had disgraced. We perceive that some of our cotemporaries are classing Mr. Stanton among what they style the "pro-slavery Democracy." This is a mistake; he is simply a Democrat, al though in our late division he sympa thized with the friends of Mr. Douglas, Upon all other questions, currency, tariff , and indeed all the old issues which used to divide parties, Mr. Stanton is quite radical. Upon these questions he and Secretary Chase think pretty nearly alike. StiPTER Gazette alluding to our re marks in relation to Dr. Brownson's article, in reply to Archbishop Hughes, •'The Port complains because Brownson changes, and it asserts he was once a nro slavery man. Well, ho was once a Pr, tea ant, and became a Catholic, from con viction no doubt. Is that the resiin the Post denounce; him ea a '•bus bug end a demagogue," or is it for venturing t differ with his , Grace the Arch b:ebi.ip," or because he sew he mid of dav,.ry ? These last are terrible sins, no doubt, in the view of the Post." We made no complaint against Brown_ son, whatever ; we simply stated facts in regard to his public course, which the Gazette does not attempt to contra diet. His leaving one syst em of religion for another, was his business, not ours his differing from the Archbishop is his business, too; but when we find bun rushing from the extreme of Slavery propogandism to that of the eraz:e-t emancipation, we take the liberty of differing from him. Because he has become an extreme, unpracticable eman cipationist, is the only reason why the Gasetio admires him.
