The Abolitionists are preparing al their heavy guns for bne powerful s; sal*. upon President Lincoln; if aftei the attack he does not yield to their poi icy of emancipation they are to immedi ately organize in opposition to his Ad ministration. The President, makiiag up his Cabinet from those who had been his rivals for the Chicago nomination, has not proved very well, either for himself or for the country. These gentlemen now are all candidates for the sticoession, or else they are at the head of factions, each one of which is laboring to supplant the others. The means selected by which to clime into place and power is the everlasting negro agitation. Each aspi rant has a theory of his own; but in rev olutionary times, when the frames of things are disjointed, the most daring aspirant is the one who attracts the moat attention. So it is at present, as regards the great question of the. day. Eight months ago the President an nounced to the world that be regarded all the States formerly in the Union, to be in the Union still He announced his determination to kep them in the Union, by prostrating the scoundrels who were conspiring to break it. M Seward, in his instructions to our Mini tern abroad, took the same view of the subject, and the President the other day, in his message, reiterated the idea tha. the war against the rebels is for no other purpose than the putting down of rebel lion. This adhering however to the orig final purpose of the war, does not suit the Abolitionists of the country, and hence their combinations to control or pros. trate a President whom they can not use. In their anxiety to head each oth er, these aspiring demagogues stop at no extravagance. What the American people thought a war for the vindication of the government, they are endeavoring to prostitute to the meanest of partizan purposes and by the meanest expedient-. By their crying out for emancipation and arming of emancipated slaves to fight' n the side of the Union, they ac knowledge the inferiority of Northern men, and show themselves the degener ate cravens which Southern upstarts and braggarts have called us. But we do not think that these com binations of desperate and designing men, will be able to drive the President from his purpose, in prosecuting the war. Nine months residence in Wash ington has made him quite a cliffrerit man, to what he was when leaving Spring field for the seat of government. He is said to be self reliant and determined in his policy, and not to be shaken in his purpose by threats or intimidation. If these reports be true we may soon see a reconstruction of the Cabinet. 'lie President cannot afford to have divided councils in his own houselio!d, while rampant rebellion is raging in the Sou t h , and faction and conspiracy plotting his destruction in the North. Let him then imitate the old "Lion of the Hermitage" by removing from about him every one who does not agree with him. Mr. Bu_ chanan was hemmed in by traitors who desig td the destruction of the Onion, and Mr. Lincoln may before long be compelled to remove some who are plot ting to embarrass him and his Adminis tration. TEI Pittsburgh Gazette is the queerest if not the silliest paler we know of. It took side with Fremont against the government, because of his emancipa tion proclivities ; and it pounces on Gen. McClellan because he is opposed to arming the negroes. Why, if a Democrat, six months ago, had said that this rebellion could not be put down without the aid of slaves, the abolition editors of the Gazette would have bad him arrested upon a charge of treason. Now we hear it proclaimed, even in the Halls of Congress, that in order to subdue the rebellion the slaves oust be armed. An article of ours:the other day, con trasting the tone and sentiments of John Quincy Adams, with those of the raving fanatics of the present day, has attracted the Gazette's attention, and it stupidly enough ooncludes that we en dorse all that Mr, Adams ever said upon the subject of slavery and emancipation. This is not only weak but foolish. Why, we see things in the Writings and speeches of all our great men, which we endorse with all our heart, but it does not follow that we are bound to receive all that they teach or all that they believe. The Gazette is so blinded by its partizan feeling that it accepts as gospel anything coming from hign authority, and rejects doctrines as sound as " proofs of holy writ," be cause of their being promulgated by a political antagonist. Were John Quincy Adam. alive and in Congress now, in plane of your brawling Thad. Steph ens and his like, it would be a blessing to the nation. Be would labor for the preservation of the Union, and not for its tieistruetion. ''here is where he and xe*(l„tlFo him differed from your raving eligiihioniate of the present day. iireohnuat passive the @* et point in quoting Mr. Adams' opinions on ques tions of constitutional law and the law of nations. The President of the United States, as commander and chief of the army, may have power to proclaim every slave in the country free, but what then ? Would his making such a proclamation affect the object, and at the same time put down rebellion and restore the Union? If it would not do all the-t>, what stiase is there in the Gazette's di recting our attention to Mr. Adam.' conceptions of ahttract constitutional and national laws ? Our pcsition is surmunded with a sufficient number of dangers already. Abolition would throw against us irrevocably, the four states of Missouri, Kentucky, Vir• ginia and Maryland, which it is costing the nation such efforts to retain. We have cur hands full as it is, and if there is to be any such suicidal legislation, we might as well cut loose at once, and begin taking up the arteries to prevent our bleeding to death." Col. Mulligan The hero of Lexington appears to be as good a talker as he is a soldier. One evening last week, he was serenaded by the officers of the New . York Fifteenth reg.ment, at Washington, when he thanked them in the following speech: "Fellow citizens—l thank you most heartily for this unexpected complimelt. The hour in so late, or rather so early, that I can only detain you with but a few w,rds. I assure you that I tee) proud that here, in the Capital of the nation, by the side of the great army of the Potomac, such a rec ognition is made of the service I was able to render, and of the bravery of my corn. wand during the nine days siege at Lex ington It is painful • o contemplate the present condition of our country, but there is one consolatory thought in connection with it.
