Found Dbajd— FataX accident.- Yesterday morning, at an early hoar, the body of a laborer named George Moran, was found lyiog on the tow path of the canal, dose to bridge over Sandusky street, in the Fourth Ward, Allegheny.— The head and arms of the deceased were under water, at the side of the canal, while the body was stretched across the tow path, j A dinner bucket lay alongside of the body, and the supposition was that the deceased had turned off Sandusky street, for the purpose of entering upon the trestle work I of the railroad, when he missed his foot* I lag and fellto the ground, a distance of I eight or ten feet. Moran was abont fifty I years of age, and resided with his family on Liberty street, Allegheny. He worked | at Fulton’s foundry, in this city, and it is I said he left for home at nine o’clock Tues- I d*y evening. The body was removed to I the residence of the family, and Coroner I Boat wick web summoned and held an ins j q uest,-- There were no indications of vio-I lence and the jury found a verdict of death I from causes unknown. | Blankets, &c,, for the Soldiers.— So far the ladies of our county have done nobly in furnishing articles necessary for the fc'bmfott of our troops. • Jacob Glosser, K*q., Government Agent here for the col lection of these supplies, informed us yes terday that he had jußt shippxi two large dry goods boxes, closely packed, contain* ing blankets, quilts, comforts, pillows, &c , to QuarteEmasier General Meigs, to bedis tributed among the Pennsylvania Volun teers. Ho had three boxes nearly ready, whnh will be forwarded to day. The con tributions are from the First and Seventh Wardk, Pittsburgh and First Ward, Alio* gheny. The ladies of the Third Ward, Pittsburgh, sent several packages of simi lar articles, directly to Colonel Bowley’s regiment. We are glad to see such a lively interest taken in this matter and are confident that Pittsburgh will do her duty in this, as in every other patriotic move ment Ora Refinery Explosion. —A corres pondent of the Chronicle, writing from Franklin on the Ist instant, says:—“This evening, after supper, an oxplosion was heard by persons in various parts of the town, and immediately ibereatter, Colonel Hoover’s refinery, near the lower end of the town, wasseen to be wrapped in flames. As any attempt at extinguishing the fire was deemed futile; attention was turned to the saving of the planing mill and the Alle gheny bridge, which were adjoining. The wind blowing the fire away fror them saved them, although the heat was so in* tense that the quantitiei of water which were thrown on them were dried up in a few minutes. The scene was grand in the extreme, reminding one of the destruction of the Duquesne Depot. One man named Arnot, chief refiner, was so badly burned that it is feared he cannot live. From one hundred to three hundred barrels of oil, part refined, were destroyed. Loss esti* hxated at $5,000. .tutussco Oil Company.—We diroot 1 attention to the advertisement of this com pany in another column. They have opened an office at Ho. 45 Hand street, for the sale of their refined coal and carbon oifa,‘tor the manufacture of which they have superior facilities, enabling them to ofeallenge competition in quality. The President of the Company is James O’- Hara, Esq., and the Secretary Mr. R. R, Pleming, both gentlemen of excellent bu- Blneacapacity, with whom it is a pleasure to do .business. We have no doubt but this cptojfASy will do its full share of business- SSaTOTJB Accident. —On Tuesday a lad named McOluskey, son of a mill'hand re- I siding In the Second Ward, Allegheny, was-soverely injured by the upsetting of a pile of boards at Milligan’s furniture works. I —A correspondent of the National hUclli* I gencer, writing fiom London, says:—“A I new use which has been found for apples I threatens us with a scarcity of cidor ; not I from the failure of the apples, although I a partial crop, but because they are likely I to be applied to a more profitable purpose I (so far as the growers are concerned) than | in making a household beverage. It seems I that the Manchester calico dyers and I printers have discovered that apple juices I supply a desideratum long wanted in mak j ing fast colors for their printed cottons, I and numbers of them have been into Dev* I onshire and the lower parts of Somerset* 1 shire, buying up all the apples they can j get, and giving such a price for them as I in the dearest years hitherto known has I not been offered. We know of one farmer in Devonshire who ha- a large orchard, for the produce of which he i ever before re- I ceived more than 250/., and yet he has sold it this year to a Manchester man for 36(M. There can be no doubt that the discovery will create quite a revolution in ’the apple trsde.” The improvement will soon reach this country, and then, when we have a good crop of apples, (which is not the case this year,) there will be a new market open for the surplus. Fire and Roburry.—On Sunday night, says the Holidayaburg Register* the store of James M. Ktnkead, Esq., at Yolbw Springs, was robbed and afterwards fired, and the building and its contents consum ed. The thief who robbed and fired tbe store has been traced to a ravine near “Old Soap Fat Furnace.” He had & wheel-barrow on which he, no doubt, con* veyed what goods he selected, and ii is to be'hoped he will be overhauled and brought to justice. Since writing the above, the robber and incendiary has been taken and is now in jaii. Bib name is John Dunson, an ill looking darkey. H)3 captors found him soundly sleeping beside his wheel-barrow load of goods.
