Th. new system seems to work admirably, and under it the taxes will come in much more promptly. Until Ulu 9ith inst., taxes will be received at the Treasurer's office without abatement or addition. After that date warrants will be issued for all unpaid taxes, with live per cent and costs added. As the law will be rigidly enforced after that date mentioned, it will be the interest of all who have not paid their taxes to do so within the next twenty days. THE Ronixkl - AFFAIII.-A !otter to the Wheeling Pi-en states that in the recent attack on Romney by the Federal troops, some ono hundred and fifty of the rebels were killed and wounded in the skirmishes that took place while they were following up the Union forces. Only two of onr men were killed, two drowned, two badly and fourteen slightly wounded. One of the printing offi . .:es was destroyed, and the other brought to New Creek. The Colonel gave orders, when entering Romney, that if any soldier entered a private dwelling to disturb the Inmates, he should be instantly shot. DROWNED.,—Chas, llaughan, an Irish man who kept an apple stand in front of the Exchange Bank, Fifth street, was acci tentally drowned in the Allegheny river on Monday afternoon. At the time of the accident he was standing on some drift wood catching lumber as it, floated past, when his footing gave way, and ho was pre cipitated into the river and was drowned. Be resided on Diamond alley, near the Diamond, and leaves a wife and family. The body has not ye', been recovered. ENGINEER KILLED.-Air Joseph Lewis, formerly of Baltimore, but for a number of years past, a citizen of Steubenville, and an Engineer on the Stubenville and Indiana Railroad, met with a fatal accident at Cadiz Junction, Saturday morning last. While engaged in coupling a locomotive to a tender, his body was caught between them and so seriously crushed that he died from the injuries thus received on Monday. Mr. Lewis was about thirty.ftve years of age, and highly esteemed by his fellow employees. As the Pennsylvania State election will W.. , place next '.Fiizdsy, a number of pd., itleians of that State are electioneering among- t'm troops irom Pennsylvania along the fine of the Potomac. On that day the latter will vote in their respective camps, the Cs-, and Lieutenants acting as judges of elections, under the law, being as valid as if the voting took place in their precincts at home. The presence of active politicians in camp for the purpose of ins thiencing the voting of volunteers is not considered by rigid disciplinarians as cal. culated to have it good moral effect upon the army. Captain Thomas, of the quartermaster's clothing and equipage department, has on exhibition at his office a considerable amount of clothing belonging to the rebel army, which was captured at the time of the advance of our troops on Munson's Md. Some of the rats and pantaloons for the officers were of the finest French cloth and of substantial character. They were calitured in a rebel wagon, together with mindsets, sabres pistols and several of Colt's patent six chamber rifles The cloth• ing is elaborately adorned with tinsel. Maj. Reicher, of the Assistant Quarter, master's Bureau, has been appointed to a Colonolency. Captain Hart, his assistant, will, it i; supposed, be promoted as a con sequence. The tug boat Pusey arrived this evening and reports that five or six vessels of the Potomac flotilla are lying near Maryland within view of the rebel battery at Free- stone Point. The remainder of our vessels are off Aquia Crook, from which the pirate George Page nas recently made repeated unsuccessful attempts to emerge. Numer ous small craft loaded with supplies, were passed by the Pusey. They were bound for Washington, There has been no firing by the rebels ;niece last Thursday, nor con any signs of life be seen at Freestone Point. The Po. tom!r.e is certainly not now closed by the enorny. Our merchants are daily receiv ing ,goods from the North by way of the river. The Second Auditor of the Treasury has issued a circular to enable those who may have claims upon the United States, for money due deceased officers and soldiers to obtain a settlement with the least delay. The Rebels Frightened. QUINCY, ill.. Oct. 2.—Messrs. Flagg and Latkine, of the Quartermaster's De. partment, had just arrived from the West. They report that the commanding officer at Monticello, Missouri, had placed under ar rest all the county officers. They will be sent to St. Louis for trial. Letters from some of Green's men, is ken from a rebel arrested at that place, state that the rebels at Lexington are badly frightened and would probably scatter into small parties before Gen. Fremont's forces could be efficiently concentrated to atteck them. Milwaukee Democratic State' Convention MILWAUXER, October 2.—The cretin State Convention at Madison , today nominated B.
