MARKET MAKING lieu" Mo., Aug. ti.—Mr. Burden, stage proprietor, from Springfield, on Monday noon, furnishes the following items : General Lyon, with his forces, had fall. en back on • Springfield, having reached there on Monday morning, and was pre paring for a vigorous defence. The rebels were advancing by four different roads, and their advance was ascertained to be from ten to fifteen miles distant. General Lyon had called on 2,500 Home Guards from the country around Springfield. It was expected the enemy would make an immediate attack, from the fact that their commissariat was in a miserable condition, they being obliged to depend on foiced contributions for temporary supplies. It It was generally remarked in Springfield that Gen. Lyon was perfectly confident of success in ease of an attack. He had no entrenchments, but would depend upon his splendid artillery in the open field. •Fif&y wagons laden with provisions had reached him. ST. Louis, Aug. 8 —The report of Gen. Lyon's death is untrue, he being at Spring, field on Monday morning, later than which no advices could have been received here. • HENRY EBBEN, ORGAN MANUFACTURER, Keeps Constantly hand CHURCH AND PARLOR ORGANS, OF EVERY SIZE AND DESCRIPTION, MO. 1. Foe-Tags9 MoanoE, Aug. 8 —The vil lage of Ltampton has been burnt by Gin. hiagruder, in his advance with the rebel forces. A fugitive, yesterday morning, brought word of the approach of a large Confederate force from Yorktown. These rumors were confirmed at sp. m. by an intelligent deserter from the secessionists, named E. A. Mahew, a native of Maine, but ,a resident of Gecrgia until impressed into service, who furnished an account of the expedition. Mr. Mahew has been sta tioned at Yorktown since the Ist of June. On Friday last Colonel, now Gen. Ma gruder left Yorktown with a force of 7000 men, including 200 cavalry and eight pieces of artillery, viz: three Parrott guns, four howitzers and ono cannon. Part of the troops were from Williamsburg. On Monday night they encamped at Groat Bethel, which had been completely desert. ed. On Tuesday night they advanced to wards lismpton, and at noon yesterday took up their position on Bacon river, three miles from tho town, where Mahew man aged to escape through a cornfield, and by swimming a c.,uple of streams he reached the Fortress. He says the obpet of this expedition was to draw out our forces to attack Camp Hamilton, near Nepert News, if practica. ble, and at least to destroy Hampton so as to prevent ua from wing it for winter quarters. Gen.:Butler at once repaired to tliie end of lifimpton Bridge, where he remained until eleven o'clock. Col. Weber erected a barricade near the Hampton end of the bridge, and placed a strong guard at various points on this side of the creek. A few minutes past midnight, General Magruder, with about five hundred Cone federates—some of them belonging in Hampton --entered the town and inimedi, ately fired the buildings with torches. The greater part of the five hundred houses were built of wood, and as no rain has fallen lately, the strong South wind soon produced a terrible conflagration. There were perhaps twenty white people and double that number of negroes re. maining in town from inability to remove, some of whose houses were tired without waking the inmates. The rebels gave Carey Jones and his wife, both of them aged and infirm, but hacen minutes to remove the few afticlas of furniLure to the garden. Several of the whites and also of the negroes were bur , ried away to be pressed into the Confeder., ate service. lm. S.:otleld, a merchant, took refuge in a swamp above the town.— Two negroes were drowned while attempt, ing to cross the creek. A company of rebels attempted to force the passage of the bridge, but were re , pulsed with a loss of three killed and six wounded. The fire raged all night. The greater part of the confederates withdrew towards morning, and at noon to-day, when I visited the place, but seven or eight buildings were left standing. The destruction of the town was an unwonted act of cruelty to the resident lit bmists, and moreover entirely useless, as General Batter intends to winter his army beyond Hampton. An attempt will be made to fasten this act upon the General, but after ten o'clock on 'Wednesday night there was not a Fedora! soldier in Hampton. C. At eleven o'clock they were serenaded by the Blues' Band. Breekinridge Is now en deavoring to speak ; but is constantly in terrupted by cheers for Crittenden, Gen eral Scott, the Kentucky election, and for the Union. It is impossible to hear what he 6 endeavoring to say. There are seva end thousand persons present, a majority of whom are Union men. They call on the band for the "Star Spangled Banner," "Yankee Doodle," Se, but cab get noth ing from them but "Dixie" and the "Mar seilleise.•' Attempts to quiet the people wore res por dad to by cries of "Remember the 19;b of April," "Remember the week of terror." Several Lights took place, and some of the secessionists were roughly handled. He was finally compelled to retire without speaking, and the cheers of his friends were drowned amid groans and hisses. Vallandigham did not attempt to speak, and the crowd dispersed, with cheers for the Union and groans for Jeff. Davis, in terrupted by counter cheers and hisses. BALTIMORE., Ang. 9 ,—Breckinride'e ef forts to speak were continued half an hour, before he was compelled to desist. Among the broken sentences heard were, that he de. aired tospeak for the poorand weak and not for the rich and powerful—a voice respond ed, you lie, "and you know you do." He ferred to the position of Maryla , d, whose citizens had again and again been outraged in their dearest constitutional rights, and to all respectful enquiries as to the charges alleged against those who had been rudely torn from their homes and families; nothing but contemptuous ,responses had been heard. Do you, he said, call this liberty'—[Cries of no, no, intoriningled with hisses and shouts, of dry up, you traitor, ‘te., Mr. Breckinridge inquired why they were present if they did not desire to hear him. [Cheering, followed by hisses, drowned his voice—a violent commotion was now observed among the crowd which swayed from pavement to pavement, as under strong excitement, and the espantoons of the police were plied with vigor-upon the heads of those who seemed to bo resisting.] Mr. Breckinridge, speaking amid the din, said that those who interrupted him with opprobrious epithets and with hisses, were poor fellows who wore tightening the degrading fetters which bound them. [Res stewed cheering followed instantly by a renewal of violent disturbance.) Mr. lireckinridgo—l - ou poor fellows may hiss mo now, but your children will bless me, [A voice—oh, go to South Caro lina and be d—d to you ] This was met by vehement cheers and a rush by the police, followed by a gang of men right towards the side from whence pro ce4ded the cheers. Another scene of com motion ensued, during which several men were severely beaten and hurried bleeding from the street. Mr. Breckinridge—lf you don't intend to allow me to speak, then disperse the crowd. I did not volunteer to address you, remember. [Cheers and hisses.] Mr. Breckinridge—lf I did not know that squad of men disturbing this assemblage were no exponents of the sentiments of the people of Baltimore I should despair of your city— cheers for Jeff. Davis and General Scott. ] ] Amid frequent interrup tions the speaker proceeded to say, that since the time when constitutions had been designated as limits to despotic power, nothing so outrageous as these enactments by the administration had ever occurred. Liberty,he said, existed before Constitutions were formed, and whenever issue is present. ed between liberty on one hand and a mere form of government on the other, the form would perish, but principles would sur. vive.—[Hisses, groans and cheers.] Mr. Breckinridge—l feel personally res ponsible for the poor fellows so rudely treated. I grieve to think that any one should be hurt on my account.—[Cries of go on—cheers for Jeff. Davis and the Southern Confederacy.] WASHINGTON CITY Ang. 8. —Prince Napoleon, who started to visit Manassas did not return to Washington this morn ing as he intended.
