'5lO#N;IlyG AUG. 10 enator Douglab and the - Missouri Ile publican. ---- Some 01 the Republican newspapers and letter writers seem to enjoy the opportunity of throwing out liberal in sinuations and even false Statements prejudicial to the memory ofthe late Senator Douglas. T 'Re publican sets one of these cowards 'at rest in the folloiving style,: first copying the statement of a Chicago correspon dent of the New York Tribune: . • "Mr. Douglas was extremely liberal, and spent money with a lavish hand. At the time of his last great canvas for the Senate, he paid more money to the Missouri Republican alone, - than all which was expended An behalf of Mr. Lincoln during the campaign." - Such is a statement contained in a letter from Chicago, dated the 4th inst., to'the New York Tribune, and repro. duced in the Democrat of this city. It. is due to the memory of the dead as well as ourselves,' that we should notice an assertion intended to reflect injuri 7 only upon his reputation, and possibly to prevent proper efforts being made to relieve his estate from embarrassment. We supported, as is well known, the re election of Judge Douglas fo the'Senate of the United States, but whoever says that we received from him one cent; either directly or indirectly, covertly or in any other way, before or after' his election was seemed, tells an unpardon able falsehood. We intend this denial to he so broad and general as to admit of no escape. We advocate the cause of Mr. Douglas for no other reason than that we believe him-to be the ablest of that day in the Union. While we knew him to be an ambitious man, we were satisfied that his ambition was of so lofty and generous a character that he never would do harm to the American Union. We believed him to be a tational man, and our hope at that day was that his success in being returned to the Senate would be the means of placing him in the Presidency. The country is realiz ing now the misfortune which shut him out of that high office, and no one can yet foresee the calamities which ere in reserve for us in consequence of this fatal mistake. St..Lottle to be captured, It is now stated that 4 54 (. a t 1f , as IFiraftittifirtgr a ," in its operations in this Stea l - Means to strike directly at St. Louis, while mak ing a feint at , Cairo and Bird's Point. It is contended that St. Louis once in the possession of JACKsoN, with the Arsenal and Barracks taken, will afford a key, not only to the early occupation of the Capital, but to the speedy subju gation of the entire State. It will, also, it is held, open the Mississippi to the mouth of the Ohio, and facilitate com munication with the Southern Confede racy, even though the Federal troops Ibe not dislodged from their positions around Cairo. But the great object in the capture of St. Louis, would be to "dictate terms to the United States- Government," or divert such a force from the operations in Virginia as• would allow Jxrr. .13Avp comparative ease at Richmond. This is a grand scheme, and, if carried out, would.prob ably exhibit much strategy. It is, however, one thing to plan and another to execute. There is a great deal of hard fighting before Jackson and his crew ere they reach the suburbsjof this city, and then the war would be only just begun. Our word for it, Jackson is not going to try to take St. Louis without an army a vast deal larger than any he at present seems likely to get. The fact is, he is only aiding the Con federates to remove the seat of war as far as possible from their own borders, and has no idea. of ever getting bank into the Governor's chair. This is based on the hypothesis that he is not stark raving orazy.—[St. Louis Repub lican Looking on this Picture, then on- That.
