Mr. Clark, Pickenpaugh, Colonel of a Virginia regiment, came in hot haste and applied to the Committee on Home Defenoe for men and arms to protoct Morgantown, the citizens fearing an attack from tho secessionists at Grafton. Col. Pickenpaugh, who left Mor« gantown, ou horseback, at eleven o'clock Monday morning and reached here by mid night, reports that tbe utmost enthusiasm was evinced at Uniontown, and tho military at once took measures to march to tho support of Morgantown and vicinity. Two companies were to leave Uniontown on Monday evening for Morgantown. Col. P. was soon c. n> Vinced that the trepidation of the loyal j.oop|p of Morgantown was groundless, when inform ed of the movement U|>on Grafton, which will command all the attention of the rebels. He stated that the secessionists had cut the U-le gragh wires between Morgantown and Union, town, Pa., to preventeommunieation, and this was the first cause of alarm. A gentleman now at the Monongahola House elates that the secossinnists have lakon possession of Horgantown. Another gentle man who arrived yesterday stales that the ae» ceasionisla appeared in Morgantown ani de manded a quantity of aruie which had been seDt there for the Union men, hut on seeing them in the hands of the latter desisted from any further attempts to obtain them. Mr. Veech and other gentlemen who arrived from Uniontown last evening, confirmed the intelligence of the occupation of Morgantown by the aaceepioniste, though the particulars are meagre. A messenger arrived in Uniontown at sir o’olook on Tuesday morning and stated that a body of men were marching on Mor gantown and as be left ho heard the firing of cannon. A second messenger stated that 300 armed rebels, under Uol. Heck, had enterod the town about throe o’clock In the morning and taken possession of it. As they approached, a small cannon, stationed on the bridge, was flrod at them, but there being few arms in the town and the ihbabitanta not fully aroused, no fur ther resistance was made and the asgailants'had an easy vtotory. Morgantown is about twenty fivo miles from Orafton, whero fifteen hundred of the rebels are stationed, and about the same dis tance from Uniontown, in this Stale. The inhabitants of the latter place fear an attack from the rebels, and as they are almost un armed, there would be as little difficulty in taking that place e» Morgantown. The ipe cie in the bank at that place might prove an incentive for attack, if no other object were in view. BDWIN A. MYERS. Gentlemen from Uniontown now here are desirous, if threateniug indications continue, of procuring arms and men for protection, and to this end they held a consultation with the Committee on Homo Defence last evening. It is thuugbt five hundred men will be suffi cient to protect the town. No action will be taken until further • intelligence is received, which will probably be by the half past ten o’clock train tliis morning, if not earlier by the Brownsville boat. Ibuokst. Coroner Bostwick yesterday morning held an inquest upon John Doak, the victim of the railroad accident on Monday. A verdict of accidental death was rendered. WAR MOVEMENTS IN WESTERN VIBUINIA. Rumored Capture of Morgantown by the Secessionists. THE NEWS CONFIRMED The news from Virginia is now anxiously looked for, owing to oar close proximity to tbe line of that State, and the faot that. a number of our soldiers have gone. to .the aid of the loyal men of that State. We noticed yester day the movement of the troops at Camp Carlisle and a regiment of -Ohio Volunteers toward Grafton, Va., in the vicinity oi which the secessionists are about fifteen hundredßtrong. The Wheeling Intelligencer states that the rebels had burned two bridges between Man. nington and Farmington and lorn up a por. tion of the railroad track between those places and Grafton. Letters received yesterday con firm this intelligence. The faot is significant, as going to show that the rebels had no inten- tion of marching upon Wheeling, but on the contrary (eared an attack from that point, and when they learned of the movement of troops took measures to prevent their near approach. An engineer on Lha Bsllimoro and Ouio Road reported that the Secessionists at Graf ton had destroyed the Kailroad bridge over Cheat river, east of Grafton, and several smaller bridges between Grafton and Wheel ing. He could not tell whether the splendid iron bridge over the Monongahela river, above Fairmont, had been destroyed or not. About five thousand United Stales troops are now occupying Western Virginia above Wheeling, and with tho Federal foroos occu pying Winchester, tho secessionists at He. per’s Ferry are completely surrounded, and must be captured or starved out. . s • •»S - c .« ;o'i ■ *7 PITTSBURGH. WEDNESDAY MORNING, MAY 29, 1861. Remarkable Facte. In this general depression of our com mar cial and other mo*t important public interests, whilst the popular mind, everywhere fear fully agitated, alternates between hope and despondency, pleasure and grief, It is satisfac tory to reflect that the spirit of active and hopeful industry is still to be seen amongst us. Tbe newspapers never did a better busi ness than at present, and very seldom contain ed less reliable intellectual aliment; the ma kers of our National flag are only common cing to rest after enormous labor; and, if you Will only cross over to Birmingham, you will see one of the busiest and gayest sights in the basemeut of St. John’s Church you could wish to behold. In addition to the great variety of interesting articles on exhibition at tbe la dles’ fair, the managers have secured tbe ser vices of a very skilful performer on the Irish bagpipes. We have beard him discourse his cheerful, soft and melodious voice, and were at once reminded of the words of Geraldus Cambren cis, on the music of anciont Ireland. Their movements in music are quick and sweet; their melody and concord are in complete harmony.” The minaturo Cathedral to be ex hibited is quite different from tho one shown some years Binee, and possesses over the latter all the advantages of tbe enlarged experience and rare taste of its ingenious constructor. A supper a la mode will be prepared on Thurs day and Saturday, at 7 o’clock, P. M. Deserter Arkwi^l).. —Soveral sensation items in reference to a private in one of the Pennsylvania volunteer companies, having been larietted or garrotod while on duty as a guard, near Camp Slifer, havo been extensive* ly published; but the faots in the matter rather interfere with tbe romance of the story. It appears the man in question, W. D. Coon rod, was a member of company K, Capt. William Trovillo, and it was feared ho might have been foully dealt with. Circumstances transpired, however, a day or two subsequent to his dis appearance, which created the suspicion that he had desortod. The commandant of camp Hhfer, thinking the latter slate of the case most probable, telegraphed to Capt. Cantwell, of tbo Armstrong Rifles, to be on tho look out for such a man. The vigilant and gallant Captain did look out, and in accordance with his directions, Sergeant De Haven, of tho Rifles, picked Mr. Coonrod up, at Kittanning, on Saturday last, brought him to this city, and he is now under arrest, in the qu artera of Capt. C., at camp Wilkins, awaiting a requi sition from camp Slifer. Kittanino Rifles —This fine military company, commanded by Capt. L. S. Cant well, a prominent member of the Kittening Bar, held a meeting the other evening, at which tbe following resolutions were passed unanimously: Resolved, That we hereby tender our warm est thanks to Lieut. Presentations —Among tho numorous presentations that have been made, within a few davs, to gallant and meritorious officers, it affords us ploainre to notice the following: Ono day last week, Capl. I forbore yesterday, to sute orally the provisions of the Constitu tion of the l nitod Sutes which make theso .rinciples the fiin.lamanul law of the Union, jecause an oral statement might bo misunder stood in some portions of it, and 1 shall, there fore, put my opinion in writing, and file it in tho office of the clerk of the Circuit Court in the course of the week The Judge added that the miliUry authority was always subordinate to the civil, and that under ordinary circurueUnces it would be the duty of the Marshal to proceed with a posse comiUtue and bring the party named in the writ into Court; but from the notoriously su perior force he would have to encounter, this would bo impossible. He »aid the Marshak had done all i.i his power to discharge his duty. Baltimore, May US —A special di-patch from Williamsport to the American says the Virginia Camp opposite that (dace was rein* i. rcod by two pieces of cannon and two addi« u.inal companies, on Friday. Mysterious movemouLs nave been going on in the Camp for the past two days. Tho ferryman was warned to permit nothing oxcept tho mail to pass aftor 11 o'clock to day The Camp is guarded with great care, neither friend nor foe being permitted to visit it. Only two companies have been on parade since Friday. Ail this may be only a mask to cover a retreat to Falls ing Waters, or it may bo with a view of pre paring to cross tho river into Williamsport. Our Home Guards keep perpetual watch and stand ready at any moment to dispute their passage over tho river. Tho Camp is in a very unsafe position, being in the horse shoe shaped piece of ground where its provis ions apd all possibility of a retreat, might oasily be cut off, and it is evident that this is what Col. Allen fears. On Saturday night, a desorter swam the Folomac and oscaped into Pennsylvania. Bollman’s Rocks at Point of Rocks ten miles this side of Harrier's has been thrown across the track and into the canal, and pas sengers aro obliged to change cars at that point. No freight cars are running. The Virginians aro using the track between the Hocks and the Forry fur tho transportation ef troops and ammunition. Washington City, May 28 —On inquir ing of several New York guests at Willard’s Hotel, it is ascertained that Van Valkenburgh parted with them at noon on a visit to Alexan dria. Therefore the distant report of his ar rest as a spy cannot be true. The belief that tho President has determined to tender Col. Fremont a Major Generalship elicits much gratification. Ex-governor Banks is here by invitation of the Secretary of War. The Washington Gity Councils have passed resolutions of respect |to Col. Ellsworth.
