shocking accident occurred in the Fifth

the rear of the train passed in front of the
school house on the corner of W r alnut street,
the little gill, who was about six years of
age, Ktlempteil to run across before it. She
was knocked down on the rail, and before

Lo., New »*end us the April number of
tins excellent periodical. Iq these momentous
times, the ordinary literature of the lime is
hardly solid enough. But old Blackwood will
maintain his position of pre eminence. VVhen
be condescends to be amusing, he does not
descend to trifling; when ho sets out to in
struct, he writes from the fullness of well-di
gested knowledge. The number before us is a
very fair specimen of the present character of
the Magazine. It commences with a paper on
“Spontaneous Combustion ” Then follows
“Italy: by Marc Monnier.” A good matured
review of Bartlett’s Dictionary of American
isms follows: and then a paper on Life in
Central Africa, being the result of sixteen
year’s travel by William Petherick. Then we ;
have the Worid of Weimar, a gossiping letter; :
the serial tale of Norman Sinclair is helped
another stage on its way. “General Patrick
Gordon, the Russian Scot," furnishes another
autobiography. The number closes with “The
Punjab in 1867.”
