The war fooling yesterday w&6, if possible,
more inlon«o than evor. Now companies were
organizing and old ones filling up. Among
tb© former wo may note those of Oapt. Hugh
S. Fleming, of Allegheny, which is rapidly
filling up, now about fifty strong: the Federal
Guard. Allegheny, Captain, J. C. Hall; First
Lieutenant, Israel V. Hoag; Second Lieuten
ant, Robert A. Scott; Second Brevet, Andrew
N. Kennedy, Hugh Murphy, Orderly Ser*
geant; about the same number of men; the
Government Guards, Capt. Rob’t. Andersor,
recruiting at Lyon's new building, Fifth street;
the Union Cavalry, organizing at the St.
Charles Livery Stable, Third street; the Inde
pendent KftDgcrs. organized as follows, and
fast filling up: Captain, T. J M’Combs; First
Lieutenant, Robert Galway; Second Lieuten
ant, James A. McKnight; Second Brevet, J.
K. Barbour; F. H. Anderson,Orderly Sergeant;
the Pennsylvania Light Guards, now nearly
ready for service; the Iron City Guards, Capt.
Gormley, recruiting at No. 270 Liberty street;
Orpt. Abijah Ferguson’s company; the West
ern Riflemen, and a number of others.
The Homo Guard is rapidly filling up in
every district, as will be 6cen by notices olso
whero. lo the Second Ward, last evening, one
hundred men were drilled. Bernard Dough
ertv and others are organizing a company of
men over 47», for home service, in the Sixth
Ward; books open at McGill’s sUro, corner of
Logan and Franklin streets.
In the adjoining counties the spirit grows
apace. At Mercer, Latrobe, Johnstown, Al
toona, New Brighton, everywhere, now com
panics are forming. Oapt R. Coulter, of
Greentburg, has raised a company of 150 men,
and Westmoreland county can furnish another
company if required. A company is organ*
izing at Mount Pleasant for the next requisi
tion. Another company from Washingun
arrived yesterday.
Tneeu mpanies now concentrated in the city
were organized into a reserve corps of the
stcond regiment yesterday, it consists of the
Duquesne Greys, Jackson Independent Blues,
Washington In fan try, Washington Invinci
ble*, Lawrence Guards, City Guards, United
States Zouave Cadets and Firemen’s Legion]
Tea Negiey Z maves and Hollidaysburg In
vincibles are tho other two companies of the
regiment. The eight companies first named
turned out ' eaterday morning and forming on
IVnn street, reviewed b«f<»re Gen. Negiey,Capt-
of tno Lawrence Guards, acting as
Adjutant. The men were then informed that
the in-;ruetior.« from the War Department
were that the troops should bo moved immadi
a'ody. Tmy were instructed thereto report
at head-quarters and bo prepared to start for
the scat of war at a moment’s notice, Gen.
Negiey having received advices to that effet t
from the Governor. The companies then re
tired to their armories and held an election for
field officers, resulting in tho choice of the fob
lowing: Colonel, David Campbell; Lieut. Col.’
Norton MiGifiin; Mujor, Alex. lla)g. This
will be the crack regiment of Western Penn
sylvania, being one of the finest bodies of men
we have ever seer, worlhy of the gallant offi
cer? they have chosen. The commissions of
the new officers have already been issued.
But few s troops were sent forward yesterday,
and those only detachments of companies gone
eastward, including one of forty men from the
Shield*' Guards. The remainder of tho troops
now here will be sent forward to-day or to
morrow. The great bulk of them, including
our city companies, are expected to leave by
the four o’clock train this afternoon.
I’reparetionß are being made for a thorough
organization and com plot® arming of the Home
Uuaids. In the Executive Committee of the
Committee of Public Safety, yesterday, the fol
lowing resolutions were adopted :
Retolved, That the committee on home de.
■fence bo authorized and instructed to procure
on the most advantageous terms which may bo
practicable, and with the least possible delsy,
threw thousand stand of arms for the purpose
of arming the citizens for tho defence of their
homes.
dissolved, That for the purpose of carrying
the foregoing resolution into effect, the several
Hankers of this city be requested to unite in
placing at tho disposal of the Executive com
mittee the sum of twenty-live thousand dollaus.
Sixteen Held pieces have also been presented
to the Committee by Messrs. Knap, Rudd &
Co , which will be immediately mounted and
companies organized for learning their use.
Several presentations were made yesterday,
but we can only note one or two beside those
mentioned elsewhere. Capt. W. C Gallagher,
of the Shields' Guards, was last evening pre
sented with a tine sword aDd other equip
ments, by J«e. Yerner, Joshua Rhodes and
other friends,at Col. Frickor’a. Col. B. H. Kerr,
on behalf of a number of personal friends of
Brevet Second Lieutenant of the Blues, J. A
Reel, presented him with one of Colt’s best re
volvers, at the armory, yesterday afternoon.
Lieut. Hotl replied appropriately. Several
other presentatione will be made to-day.
But we cannot detail all the incidents of this
Etirxing time in our limited epeeo. Suffice it
lo say that our whole people are up in arms,
ready to give their means, and lives, il neces
sary, for the cause we hi! have so much at
heart.
