The merits of circulars, bills, &c.,are -conceded, but it is held that "the handbil, to be conveyed about-by men, or to be sent into :the country, is not the best vehicle for adver tising for merchants. Let them use the news paper. The newspaper is circulated without any expense whatever to the advertiser, which is by no means an unimportant-item, as every one will testify who-has had any experience in distributing his own advertisements. Not only. is the advertisement circulated - by the news paper free of all expense, but it is dune more speedily and thoroughly than it can bo done by the advertiser. The newspaper is already an established system ; a thousand doors are opened to welcome it; a thousand messengers are daily and weekly seeking the post office to receive it; a thousand families loop for its coming, and a thousand read it when it does come. Again, those who read the newspapers are the very persons the advertiser wishes to reach ; they are the intelligent and well-to-do, the enterprising citizens of a country, and are, therefore, the must likely to buy that which is iworth buying." ' • Da. HALL, in his Journal of Health, says tthat very few of the sudden deaths which are -said to arise from disease of the heart, do really rarise from that, cause. To ascertain the real . , org . in of sudden deaths, the doctor says, the experiment has been tried in Europe and re ported to a scientific Congress head at Strasburg. bixty-six' cases ofsudden death were made the subject of a thorough post mortent examina tion. In these cases, only two were found who died from disease of the heart. Nine' out of the sixty-six died from apoplexy, while there were -forty-six cases of congestion of the lungs— that is, the lungs were so full of blood they could not work, there not being room enough for a sufficient quantity of air to enter to sup port life. The doctor goes on to enumerate pie causes that may produce congestion of the lungs. They are, cold feet; tight shoes; tight cloth ing; costive bowels; sitting still until chilled through, after being warmed by labor or a rapid walk; going too suddenly frocks close, heated - room into the cold air, especially after speaking; and sudden depressing news, operating on the blood. These causes of sudden death being knOwe; an avoidance of them may serve to lengthen out valuable lives, which would oth erwise be lost under the verdict of a heart com plaint. That disease is supposed to be inevi table and incurable, and hence men may not take the pains they would to avoid sudden (loath, if they knew it lay in their power. FOLLY OF GOING TO LA.W.—The folly of going to law was beautifully exemplified in the court of a neighboring county, last week, in a trial wherein Daniel Schortz figured as plain tiff, and Wm. Stocker as defendant. The ac tion was brought to recover the value of twelve bushels of screenings, which the plain tiff said the defendant wrongfully withheld from him. Stocker lived on Schortz'afarm, and was farming "on shares," bound in a lease to give his landlord half the grain, etc., which it was alleged he did not do, inasmuch as' he did not hand over the screenings, The entire value of the screenings was about 47,b0, and nearly two entire days were consumed in the trial of the case. Two attorneys were en gaged on each side, whose f&sdid not amount to less than fifty dollars, and the witness fees - and court increased this sum. to at least one hundred dollars, to say nothfng of the time consumed by the parties to the suit. , The jury, after a patient hearing of the case, decided that screenings did not come under the head of grain, and accordingly returned a verdict for the defendant. How much better Daniel would have been off, had he permitted his tenant to retain his screenings, and rest content. A man had always better submit to trifles, even if he imagines himself wronged, than go to law. FATAL ACCIDENV. — On Monday evening, let, inst., an accident resulting in the death of Henry Stambaugh, happened at the quarry of Mr. Andrew Gohn, near the Shawnee Fur naces, in the'vicinity of Columbia, Pa. After a heavy- blast the unfortunate man was en gagod in prying the overhanging stone, loosen.: ed in large masses. Several heavy fragments fell unexpectedly, crushing the workman, rnash ing one of his legs and terribly tearing his ab . domen. : When first crushed by . the stones the sufferer's cries - of agony were fearfal. He was, extricated with sonic difficulty, and lived but about twenty minutes. ' On the same afternoon, a lad aged about seven years, son of Mr. Henry Kurtz, tanner, of Mountjoy, met with an accident which re sulted In his death. It appears he was out 'on - the land farmed by Mr. Stephen Grisinger, in Hapho township, helping to haul arid unload manure. While thus engaged he had the mis fortune to fall under the wagon, while it was yet unloaded, the front wheel passing over his abdomen. He rose to his feet and walked about a little, but lying down again, died in a short time. He was an intelligent, preposseesingboy, and much sympathy is felt for the family in their sudden bereavement . A LisE-Pnitszavise Can.—A car has•been lately built in New Jersey, under a patent se- cured some time ago, by a Preach gentleman, named La Mothe, which promises to hold its passengers safe under all circumstances. It is built of iron, and is constructed with such strength that no amount of rolling down preci pices will do it any injury, though what is to prevent the unluckypassengers inside from be ing unpleasantly mingled does not appear' The thinness of the aides allows in the car much more width of room, .and the whole weight less by a ton than the ordinary wooden structure. The car is to be tried on the Patterson rail road before coming on the Boston i tuad Worces ter road, where it is to finally Iva used, but though the strength of the car may be tested by, tum bling it down bill, or running it into another train, it is not easy to see hovrthe safety of the passen;ers can be demonstrated, for it is hard ly creditable that even for a free ride" will any number of people allow therriselves to be shot down a bank, though in a . 6 life-preserv in car." LEFT Tow.x.—Rev. Bishop Simpson left this city.yesterday at one o'clock, to preside at the "IN. ,aviptesa _Conference weglArl..„ , - ~'; HIICRSTESINO. —Many complaints have been made this season, as to the exorbitant prices demanded and. obtained in market by buck eters who sell produce at second-hand. There are two sides to the question, some contending that 'these much•abused persons tarnish' us with fruits and vegetables at times when we could not obtain them from the producers, and that they bring early delicacies from other points, and have them for sale here before they are tit fo _ _ . u• use in our own vicinity. The Market Com dttee of Councils have been frequently peti tioned on the subject, and on Friday last they , met and adopted the following regulations to govern the sale of country produce henceforth, or until further change is necessary: Ordered, That the Clerk of the Markets be directed tb assign to dealers at second hand in country produce, (except hucksters,) which he shall know, or have reason to believe has been purchased within the county of Allegheny, stands on the western side of the Diamond, so long as such space shall be sufficient for their accommodation, the rent of which shall be lift cents each per day; and that, dealers in such produce wholly purchased without said county, shall be assigned such stands along the Easterly side of the Diamond as shalt not be required for the accommodation of venders of such pro duce of their own growth and production ; and that the officers of the markets be requested to cause to be strictly enforced the laws prohibit ing huckstering. 4:30 P. M. 12:30 A. M. t-343.1 P. M. 6:15 P. M FIREMEN'S' AtiSOClATlls—This body held their regular quarterly meeting on Monday even ing, at which' the usoal report was read, in which Mr. Leonard. the Chief Engineer. sug gested that a central alarm bell be established, and fire wardens appointed to preserve order at tires. The first, it was stated, could be main tained at the trifling cost of fifty dollars per annum, and would etfect a saving to the city in the prevention of that wear and tear of appara tus which succeeded the creation of false alarms, and the latter would save the firemen from that annoyance when in active service,to which they are very often subjected. The gentleman also suggested the propriety of procuring a Hook and Ladder "truck " for the depart ment, the expense of wLich would not exceed $5OO. A Committee was appointed to take the suggestions of the Engineer into consideration. and report upon the expediency of the same. From the same report we learn that there were twenty-nine fires and false alarms during the last quarter. The loss in buildings, were, du ring the period $24,820, and the insurance but $13,346.00. Resolutions were adopted, in vit log the Mayor of Allegheny, and the „Mayor. Treasurer, and Constables of this city to the forthcoming parade, after which the Associa tion adjourned. RIOT AT A. Pic-Ntc.—On Monday evening, while a number of Germans, who had been at tending a pic-ric at the Irop Oily Park, near Lawrenceville, were returning from the grounds, they were assailed by a number of rowdies, who attacked the musicians, throwing stones at them. and using insulting language. Three of the Mayor's police had been detailed to preserve order, Messrs. Wray, Knox and Hamilton, who, fearing a disturbance might ensue, interposed to restore peace, but the crowd rescued one person, arrested by officer Wray, and subsequently on his attempting to secure another, greeted the officers with a shower of stones, one of which struck officer liarailton on the head, and knocked him insen sible. Recovering, be and officer Wray drew their revolvers, but providently refrained from using them in the crowd. Officer Knox ar rested one of the parties, but he also escaped. The disturbance being quieted, officer Hamil ton was placed in a wagon and brought to the city; where Dr. Walters attended to his inju ries, which ho does not think serious, the skull not being fractured. Some fifteen were en gaged in the riot, and warrants have already been issued for them. • It is to be hoped that they may speedily be brought to justice for this attack on the officers of the law. Came. Bas.nnocE.-=—The arrangement for the encampment., near East Liberty, next week, are nearly completed, the ground being prop erly staked off and laid out. The spot is well suited for the purpose, being a twenty acre field, on the Pennsylvania Railroad, at Tor repo) station, and to which access can also be had by privateconveyance. Neither drinking tents, hucksters, nor offensive side-shows will be permitted within a reasonable distance of the encampment, and the orders will be strictly enforced against offisnders. A sufficient num ber of tents have been provided fur the sol diery, some twenty to thirty companies of whom are expected to be in attendance. Gen. Negley has been busily engaged in perfecting the arrangements for the comfort of those par ticipating as well as for visitors. A marquee will be provided for members of the press, who will be the guests of the commandant during their visits to the encampment. It is expected, and with reason, that this will be the largest military encampment ever assembled within the State. METAL TIPS TO BOOTS AND SHOES.—The saving in shoe leather which the small mantic tip on the toe of a boot or shoe effects is very great, and the invention is ono of practical utility. Children are remarkably fond of kicking out the toes of their shoes, thus ren dering them useless and making it necessary that another pair should be procured, although no other part of the former pair is injured. By the use of these tips, which may be made of silver, copper, iron, or any other mileable metal, the boot or shoe may be worn until it is really "done up," and they are so secure that so long as any portion of the solo remains, the tip will be held fast. They do not increase the weight of the shoe above half an ounce or an ounce. USE OF BADS.—The Bulletin, of the BrUS eels Society for the protection of animals, pub lishes the following curious and interesting fact Until a few years ago, the Park at Brus sels was shaded by trees of luxuriant foliage, which met over the alleys and screened the promenaders entirely from the sun. These were filled with birds, whose indiscretions oc casioned now and then a little annoyance to the elegant toilettes below. For this reason they; were banished ;!in a few days the leaves of the trees were in holes and dying—and now the branches are almost entirely without ver dure, and loaded with catterpillars, and the walks infested with moths. Tas BIEDYORD RAILROAD.—This work is progressing rapidly. The sub-contractors un der Messrs.,Collins, Dull &Co., aro now busily engaged in grading, and they all have' a suf ficient number of hands on their several sec tions to do, up their work speedily. The sub contractors are Captain States, Messrs. Drew, Gleason, Caton, M'Cabe, Williams and Eich elberger. The road is not all under contract, but at the last meeting of the Board of Direct ors a resolution was passed to the effect that whenever $20,000 additional stock would be subscribed, the remaining portion of the road would be let. PRESYNTATION.—The silver goblet won by 'the ere* of the I. O. Woodward, in the four oaredsregatta at the Belvidere Roue, on Sat urday last, will be , presented to the victors at seven o'clock this - evening, at the Belvidere. The Woodward boys, we hear it - whispered, in tend presenting the trophy,to a young gentle man, a member of the club, as a mark of esteem. From our knowledge of the person, we would say he is worthy of the honor. Wit are requested to say to our readers that the train of cars provided to convey persons to and from the sale of lots at the new town of Penn, on Monday next, is not only free for those who purchase,.but for those who do not. From Washington WASHINGTON CITY. August 9.—lt is stated that during the late term of the United States Circuit Court in Alabama, several indictments were found under the law of 1818, which pre scribes fines and imprisonment for engaging in. or aiding or abetting the importation of Africans within the jurisdiction of the United States. As the law of 1820, which makes the offense piracy to be visited with death, does not, in express language, repeat the former statute, a grave question has arisen, involving the point whether there can be any choice of the shove mentioned punishment; for while public sentiment at the South is against the greater juries have, it is said, expressed a dis position to render verdicts, carrying with them the less severe punishment' The opinion is entertained here, among distinguished gentle men, that in view of all the facts, notwith standing the established rules of interpreting statutes, the question will be brought before the Supreme Court of the United States, for its deci, ion. —..w ..-- New York Itoms NEW Voss, August, 9.—.Jutlso Mason, of the Supreme Court, has granted a motion for the appointment of a receiver for the Erie Railroad Comysny, and hots appointed the Hon.
