U'THE DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE OF COR RESPONDENCE met at the above place, in par suance of a call by the President. D. D. Bruce, Presi dent, in the Chair. On motion, J. H. Phillips was ap pointed Secretary. On motion. John R. Large, J. H. Phillips, A. B. M'Far land, Dr. William M. Herron and Samuel Dilworth were appointed a Committee of Finance. On motion, adjourned to meet on the LAST SATUR DAY OF AUGUST, at 11 o'clock, A. M. D. D. BRUCE, President. J. H. PHILLIPS, Secretary: HOW 'Long will a Man Lie In the Earth ere The local editors of the Dispatch, for a day or two past, have had a God-send, in the neces sary removal of the remains of the bodies of some criminals, who have been buried, from time to time, within the walls of the Western Penitentiary. - -.The evil that men do, lives after thorn; The disinterring of the mortal remains of these poor sinners has reversed this sentiment, so far as the Dispatch has been concerned. Its local has discussed these bones, philoso phically, phrenologically, theoretically, scien tifically, practically and to some extent poeti cally. Over the place of skulls the local of the Dis patch has stood, and like Hamlet and the grave digger, hold - deep discussion. We think we see him now, his locks dishevelled, and disgust upon, his countenance, standing beside the dig gers who were throwing up these bones. Ho, like Hamlet, is the questioner, while some so son of the Emerald Isle makes answer. "Here's a skull, now bath lain you i'the earth three-and-twenty years." Local—Whose was it? First digger—A devilish bad fellow's it was, whose do you think it was? Local—Nay, I know not. First Digger—A. pestilence on him for a bad rogue. He broke a woman's head once. This same skull, sir, was Gallego's skull, the black murderer. Local—This ? First Digger—E'en that. Local—Alas, poor Gallego. I did not know him, Patrick; but judging from his skull, he must have been a fellow of infinite malice, of Most excellent rascality. He never bore me upon his back a thousand times. Here hung , those thick lips which 1 never kissed—" not as I knows on." Where be your ivories now ? your Ethiopian. dances ? your songs your flashes of merriment (yah! yah! yak!) which were wont to make all the little darkies roar ? Not .ono now to mock your own grinning ? quite chap-fallen ? Now get you to.'hay lady's chamber, and tell her let her paint an inch thick,' to this favor she must come; make her laugh at that. Pr'ytbee, Patrick, tell mo one thing. Patrick—What's that, me darlint ? Local—Dolt thou think Dennis Lonorgan looked o' this fashion i' the earth ? Patrick—E'en so. tiT Local—And smelt so? Pah ! Patrick—E'en so, me darlint. Local—To what queer uses may we return, Patrick! Why may not imagination trace the ignoble dust of some poor vagabond till ho find it painting the roseleaf on a beauty's cheek? Patrick—'T were to consider too curiously to consider so. Local—No, 'faith, not a jot; but to follow him thither with modesty enough (fora local) and likelihood to lead to it; as thcs:—the vag abond was hanged; the vagabond was buried; the vagabond returned (not to dust, but) to adipocere; adipocere is very like spermaceti in appearance; spermaceti, with a little rose pink, makes a good cosmetic; and why with that adipocere, whereto this African was converted, might not some wearer of crinoline anoint her damask cheeks? DIVIINICEN WOMAN.—On Thursday, George Fortune, Secretary to the Board of Health, had occasion to visit the house of Ellen Kelly, on High street, to see a woman named Brady, who had made application to go to the Poor House., On entering the house, he found Ellen and an other woman named Margaret Mead, both very drunk. Margaret assailed a German woman who came in, and when Mr. Forums interfered, she also pitched into him. Mr. For tune went to the Mayor's office, sent up, aad lud them arrested. Ellen was sent up for three and Margaret for twenty days. Ellen has two children, which the Board of-Guardi ads will previde for until the mother is releas ed from. prison. r 7.• ,£_. VOLUME XVII. TErX LAST NIGHT.—" Ye who have tears tc shed, prepare to shed them now," not tears re sulting from excessive laughter, such as our public have been indulging in during the early part of the week, but genuine tears of grief, that Sanford, with his inimitable company— Sanford, that " fellow of infinite jest and mer riment," " who is wont to keep the (audience) in a roar," with all his " gibes and gambols," is about to leave us. "We ne'er may look upon his like again," for " life is short and time is fleeting," and ere another season rolls around Sammy and his company may rest within "the tomb 'of all the—tribe." Therefore, take Time by the forelock," and embrace the last oppor tunity of healing this company; "at4toi not upon the order of your going, but go at once.' A SAFE AND GOOD HAIR RESTORES.—Those who have tried the various preparations for restoring the hair to its original color from gray, or who wish to stop its falling off, and have not succeeded, would 'do well: to make one more trial, and get Spangler's Brair Resto rative, which costs only half a dollar, and at the same time is pleasant to use and will not disappoint those who use it. .It is a most ex cellent and agreeable wash for the hair, keeps it clean, and will not _leave any bad effects. You can buy it at Dr. Geyser's, No. 140 Wood street. FIGHTING BROTHERS SENT Up.-OR Tues day evening, James Kemp was found flourish ing a huge knife, on Pennsylvania avenue, threatening tho life of Eliza Brosin. The watchmen who arrested him say he resisted, and attempted to use his weapon. Ho was 'sent to jail for ten days.- On Wednesday evening, John Kemp, his brother, amused himself by brandishing a knife on Seventh street, to the consternation of the neighbors. Ile also was arrested, and sent up for seven days, MISE MMM 40, 4 440 e, ;,`", • ':"„t , t •,;I:r r ^"; ' • , On the Muscle. 2! On Wednesday evening, officers Moon and Hamilton, while walking along the Mononga hela wharf, observed a crowd, some squares off, which, on approaching, they found was oc casioned by a regular " mill," which was going en inside. The combatants, and also two sec onds or bottle holders, were arrested, and taken before the Mayor, who gave them a hearing. John Young, one Abf the principals, had his hair cropped very short, a /a Morrisey, and was quite a juvenile, while his opponent, Francis Lyons, was a man of years, who claimed to have been in the war of 1812, and the Mexican war. He offered to go out into the yard and whip Young in threeminutes— but the Mayor informing him that the prem ises were not used for pugilistic exhibition, he consoled himself by saying, that if Young's hair had not been cut so short, ho would have whipped him nn the first round. Chas. Liv ingston and Peter Carson, the seconds, said they belonged to the Eighth ward, Baltimore —the " bully Eighth," which never was, or never could be, taken. An allusion being made to Colson, the murderer, for whom a re ward of five hundred dollars is offered i Living ston offered to tell the Mayor where he was for two hundred dollars ; on being asked if he would not take one hundred dollars,' he indig nantly refused, declaring he would got betray any man unless ho was well paid for it—Lord Munteith had betrayed Sir William Wallace, and a stigma had forever attached to his name —he did not wish to be placed in the same category. The party were sent to jail for five days each. Acicdents and Incidents. The ki'liean Citizen notices a horrible mur der in Ceres, on the 4th inst. It appears that James Stocker had some dealings with an Irishman named James Dunn, which ended in a dispute and a threat of violence on the part of Dunn. On the 4th they were seen together and Dunn was intoxicated. Soon after that Stocker was found dead with his bead mashed, and a club lying near his body. Other cir cumstances are enough to fasten suspicion on Dunn, who had been arrested and lodged in ail. —A little son of Gee, Dulling, Martinsburg, Blair county, was with his father in the har vest field, one day last week, riding ono of the hind horses in the team, when a clap of thun der frightening the horses, they ran off, throwing the boy off, and killing him in• stantly. —During the storm on Friday week, a barn belonging to Mr: Dininger, of Lancaster township, Butler county, was struck by light ning, set on tire, and totally destroyed. WANTED A DRINK.—Mrs. Myers, wife of Nicholas Myers, Market street, who was rob bed a few nights since, on entering the bar room, yesterday morning, discovered a man hiding behind the counter. Thinking another “flat burglary" was to be committed, she rais ed the alarm and three or four parsons came in and dragged the fellow from his hiding place, threw him on the floor, and took from him a large rasp, which he had in his pocket. lie was taken before the Mayor, and proved to be Tim McTighe ; he showed conclusively that he had only gone with the intention of par loining some whisky, of which ho only sue ceedod in getting one drink. Ho was committed for three days. COMMITTP.D FOR NUISANCE.-11CDry Seeton, a colored night-Boiler, of the Seventh Ward, lined for nuisance in burying a dead horse care lessly a few days since, was again before Mayor Weaver yesterday. Having hired another horse, he, on Tuesday tight, hitched him in his cart, which ho tilled with dirt. The cart leaked, and left no pleasant odor behind. He took his cart to the Allegheny river, where, fearing arrest, he allowed it to stand until Wednesday evening, a nuisance to the neigh borhood. On Thursday morning, a little boy, almost four years old, son of a laboring man named Michael Carlin°, residing in Gildea's court, off High street, was badly hurt by being run over on Wylie street. John P. Straub, in the employ of Oliver Blackburn, Esq., was driving down "Wylie street, in a buggy belonging to that gentleman, in company with a lady, as he alleges at a moderate pace, but eye-witnesses say the horse was trotting briskly, and the child was crossing over, near High street, when the horse struck him, and knocked him down. The horse either trampled upon, or the buggy wheel . passed over the boy; but at all events, when, picked up, there was an. ugly wound just above the right cheek bone, and over the temple, the flesh being torn off. The child was taken home, and Dr. M'Cook called in, who dressed the wound, and does not con sider it - dangerous. Those who saw the oecrir ranee, were highly indignant, and Straub was immediately arrested, and taken before Alder man Lewis, who held him in $1,500 for further hearing on Monday next. He states that he was driv, ing slowly, and that the child running under the horse's/feet, ho could not avoid the accident. TEIE public, like some individuals, is slow to change a prejudice, even though the cause of its existence is very slight. This has been clearly seen by the unreasonable prejudice in favor of some old patented sewing machines, but the now Finkle Machine, sold by J. L. Religious Excitement in New York. NEW YORK, July 28.—Considerable excite ment has been created in religious circles, by an announcement in the Evening Post that Rev. Dr. Bellows had proposed, in an address before the United Clergymen of the Unitarian Church, the establishment of a' new Catholic Church, differing from the Church of Rome by the omission of what may be deemed cer tain obsolete, erroneous, or needless doctrines, but preserving the attractive features, the rit uals, the imaginative symbols, and the sacred festiv . als, which help to give the Roman Cath olic Church its popular and universal charac ter. The new sect is to be designated the Broad Church. Rev. Mr. Frothingham, a minister of the same church, and who, with Rev. Dr. Osgood, was said to be connected with Dr. Bellows' plan, denies all knowledge of the magnificent scheme. and treats the matter as ajoke. The Evening Post, however, in publishing Mr. Frothingham's card, says Mr. Frothing ham is mistaken in supposing that Dr. Bellows' plan of a new Catholic Church is a joke. The discourse which is announced is pervaded by a tone of earnest feeling which is characteristic of the eloquent preacher of all souls, and it is highly improbable that ho would be guilty of indulging his pleasantry in a form so impres sive and solemn as a public address before the. United Clergymen of that denomination. From Now York NEW YORK, July 28.—A correspondence has taken place between Mr. 3foran of the Erie, and the agents of the varions :transpor tation lines, which removes the only obstacle to the raising of the rates of transportation of the four great lines.
