Some fifteen or twenty years ago, an English military officer, who had'been twice widowed and was intent upon matrimony for the third time, came to this couotry, and after making a careful reeonnoisanee, laid siege to a " Lady's Seminary," on Long Island. Bo secretly were • • hisapproaches conducted, - that before the petti = coatgarrisori were aware thatthe place was actu ally invested; the tiesieger had captured one of 'their number and carried her off in triumph. Of course, in makinghis selection frord among thebody of fair damsels assembled within the walls of the educational fortress, the gallant Captain EdWard W. H. Sehenley, took espe cial care to choose the wealthiest. His choice -fell upon the youthful Miss Croghan, of Pitts burgh, an heirits, and nearly related to — that fa mous Major Croghan, whose heroic defense of Fort Stephenson, against a superior British force, commanded by Gen. Proctor, forms ono of the most spirit-stirring episodes in the his tory of the war of 1812. We are told that the prize thus carried off by the adventurous Cap tain Schenley, " was worth her weight in gold ;" that the property to which she was heiress, in and around Pittsburgh, was, and still is, of immense value; that her immediate relatives felt deeply outraged atthis unexpected act of "British aggression` upon American soil," and that various ineffectual attemps were made to " wrest the beauty and booty," from the hands of the conqueror. Finally, however, these asperities were smoothed down. Having won the lady, the Captain next set himself to win the hearts of her friends—and succeeded. He took up his residence in Pitts burgh, and the good citizens of that smoky city rejoiced to think that the Croghan tenements, many of which were in a sadly dilapidated condition, would speedily give place to palatial structures," and that the Croghan lands, which were,, for the most part., vacant lots, would be either built up into handsome blocks of ware houses, or converted into trim gardens. These dreams were not, however, destined to be re alized. "The Honorable Captain," mourn fully exclaims the Pittsburgh Post, " though tunong us, was nut of us." He had won his money by a coup de main, and he soon showed that he was determined to take care of it. Peo ple had called him "cosmopolitan," but they soon discovered ho was insular. They imagin ed that he would prove generous and liberal, but they finally came to the conclusion that he Was mean. The city of Allegheny brought a bill against him for thirty th iusand dollars, "for paving improvements in front of his property," which he refused to pay. The cor poration instituted suits against him for the amount, "for which judgments have been Obtained in part;" but the Captain still de• dines to fork over. tie moreover strenously recommended the repudiation of the Allegheny county bonds that were issued for railway purposes, and, leaving his paving-tax still unsettled, contributed the sum of $5OO "to sustain a newspaper which ad , vacated resistance to the law, and- which ad vised the people to abrogate the decisions of their own courts." Finding that the people were not disposed to sanction any such high - handed measures, the gallant Captain conclud ed to shako the dust of Pittsburgh from oil' his feet and return to England. We are told in this connection, that the parting benediction which he bestowed upon certain journals in that city, didnot sound exactly like a blessing. Indeed, one of the recipients mod unqalitiedly d . cribes. it as ..low flung." But if Captain Edward W. H. Schenley has lost caste in -Pittsburgh, he has gained distinction in his na tive conntry. partmoutb has added a fresh rose to his chaplet. Dartmouth wanted an 31. P- The Va_ptain presented himself and was accepted. By what "little arrangement " this prompt recognition of the Captain's transcen dent merits was brought about, is not stated in any contemporary history. But the fact is pat ,- eat, that the Pittsburgh repudiator has become - a member of the British Parliament. It is, perhaps, fortunate for his equanimity of temper that Sydney Smith did not live to, see a quasi- American repudiator answering to his name at roll-call in the English . House of Commons. His trenchant sarcasm would have kept the new member for Dartmouth more, uneasy in tis seatthap was that medawal gen tleman, w ho, Alice upon a time, set upon a cushion which was stuffed with the hair of St. Gengulphus. - ..ripECE MANUFACTURERS OF SA \V- A.
