Inquiries are frequently wade of me in
reference to tbe temperance work we are
doing in connection with our Sunday
Schools under ihe name of Soft (iuard*.
\ few words in answer to those inquiries
will be re; d with interest by many of the
reader of the Report*r.
In the ars! place, the Safeguard move
ment d.-r- not in the lea-t interfere with,
but t- calculated t<- further all other teui
perenew eib-rls. The Safeguards include
all persons, old and ynunc, especially the
members of ur Sabbath Schools, who
have never formed the habits of using in
toxicating drinks and tobacco. Cards are
prepared staling the object, the pledge
dec., with blank space for nauie and P. O.
address, of the signer. Tlic-e card* are
distributed in Sunday Schools with the re
quest that they all "ba returned the next
Sabbath to the Su|M-rinteiidant, signed or
riot, according to choice. The names are
then c. pied, kept 011 file, and the card* are
teturnid to those whose names they hear.
It i* intended to follow up these efforts
with "precept upon precept."
A picture, representing life <>u the up
grad" and dowu grade, will scon be ready
for distribution among alt the member*.
Three thousand more are pw- called for,
of those who can make up their luinds to

and girls in Centre county will some day

Thinking that a few items from tlii. western
countv would interest your readers, I will
furnisli you with a few :
To begin with. 1 w ill -Ulc that this west
ern country beats all I ever saw . if any of
vour numerous reailers doubt my word,
let tlieui come out bert, and tber w ill see
tlie dilst piled in the fence corners, same a
mk,w drilts. We have had no rain of any
account thin summer. Everything is dus
ty, wells and cisterns are dry. Water i*
iii great demand. Every other man here,
is a sharper trying to live off of his neigh
bor. Grain is ecniing in here lively, busi
ness brisk, money pretty plenty; all seem
'to have enough to eat, drink, and wear.
I receive the Rporlrr regularly and woyld
not do without its weekly visits, bringing
the news, regularly of all that is transpir
ing in "Old Centre," one thing I mis* and
that i* news from my old home ; is there no
smc in Ben tier or Pulton townships, capable
-of furnishing the It'jHirlrr with some of
the doiug in those townships? what has
become of the mail who used to grind out
machine jjoetgy occasionally? 1 have not
heard from him for some time, I am get
ting exceedingly anxious about him, and
sjreatly fear that the honor* of office
liave affected him so much that b<- has for
gotten the friend* who helped elevate Itimj

left for Selins Grove, in order to prepare

was inclined that way, but lie must not, in

-present. The farmers are busy hauling
their grain to market and they have been
getting pretty lair prices for it so far, but
ow long it will be this I cannot say.
From present indications, grain of all
kinds will decline. Stock is low, hardly
pays to raise stock at the present prices,
but there is no doubt, but what cattle and
Logs wi'.l advance in price toon. The mer
chants arc beginning to get their winter
goods, and our streets now present u lively
appearance. Fruit is very plenty, apples
selling from '25 to 50 cents a bushel. Po
tatoes 50 cents. Fresh fish are for sale on 1
tlie streets every few days, from 5 to 10
cents per lb. Eels do not grow in this
western country the climate does not agree
with them. The old "Philosopher," Hor
ace Greeley passed through here a few
weeks ugo, he hud on his old buttered hat,
1 was ill most tempted to ask, if he had
to tell us what he didn't know about
farming, a few daysafter he passed through.
President Grant passed, on his way to Ga
ilena, 1 though the President looked ri.ther

the hand writing on the wall, and wa*

Washington, September 22.—Georgia

cerning the affair. The Republicans ay
that Coleman went to Pierce'* house for

Democrats declare that Coleman ""ant to
serve a magistrate's Warrant, when Pierce
resisted and *'ut Colain.Hl- Pierce fled
but subsequently returned to hU home un
der flic protection of bayon*t*. Pierce
was given to the civil authorities for trial,
aud while in custody, a band of disguised
men took him from the officer, its believed,
killed him. It is reported that the soldiers
have order* to arrest a number of citizen*
living jn the vicinity and there i much
excitement.
