For the Reporter. Inquiries are frequently wade of me in reference to tbe temperance work we are doing in connection with our Sunday Schools under ihe name of Soft (iuard*. \ few words in answer to those inquiries will be re; d with interest by many of the reader of the Report*r. In the ars! place, the Safeguard move ment d.-r- not in the lea-t interfere with, but t- calculated t<- further all other teui perenew eib-rls. The Safeguards include all persons, old and ynunc, especially the members of ur Sabbath Schools, who have never formed the habits of using in toxicating drinks and tobacco. Cards are prepared staling the object, the pledge dec., with blank space for nauie and P. O. address, of the signer. Tlic-e card* are distributed in Sunday Schools with the re quest that they all "ba returned the next Sabbath to the Su|M-rinteiidant, signed or riot, according to choice. The names are then c. pied, kept 011 file, and the card* are teturnid to those whose names they hear. It i* intended to follow up these efforts with "precept upon precept." Lkxa 111.. 0< T. i.th !H71.--I>eur Sir.— Thinking that a few items from tlii. western countv would interest your readers, I will furnisli you with a few : To begin with. 1 w ill -Ulc that this west ern country beats all I ever saw . if any of vour numerous reailers doubt my word, let tlieui come out bert, and tber w ill see tlie dilst piled in the fence corners, same a mk,w drilts. We have had no rain of any account thin summer. Everything is dus ty, wells and cisterns are dry. Water i* iii great demand. Every other man here, is a sharper trying to live off of his neigh bor. Grain is ecniing in here lively, busi ness brisk, money pretty plenty; all seem 'to have enough to eat, drink, and wear. I receive the Rporlrr regularly and woyld not do without its weekly visits, bringing the news, regularly of all that is transpir ing in "Old Centre," one thing I mis* and that i* news from my old home ; is there no smc in Ben tier or Pulton townships, capable -of furnishing the It'jHirlrr with some of the doiug in those townships? what has become of the mail who used to grind out machine jjoetgy occasionally? 1 have not heard from him for some time, I am get ting exceedingly anxious about him, and sjreatly fear that the honor* of office liave affected him so much that b<- has for gotten the friend* who helped elevate Itimj to the responsible position of J. The farmers are busy hauling their grain to market and they have been getting pretty lair prices for it so far, but ow long it will be this I cannot say. From present indications, grain of all kinds will decline. Stock is low, hardly pays to raise stock at the present prices, but there is no doubt, but what cattle and Logs wi'.l advance in price toon. The mer chants arc beginning to get their winter goods, and our streets now present u lively appearance. Fruit is very plenty, apples selling from '25 to 50 cents a bushel. Po tatoes 50 cents. Fresh fish are for sale on 1 tlie streets every few days, from 5 to 10 cents per lb. Eels do not grow in this western country the climate does not agree with them. The old "Philosopher," Hor ace Greeley passed through here a few weeks ugo, he hud on his old buttered hat, 1 was ill most tempted to ask, if he had to tell us what he didn't know about farming, a few daysafter he passed through. President Grant passed, on his way to Ga ilena, 1 though the President looked ri.ther •care worn and solemn, I presume he see's the hand writing on the wall, and wa* Jncditating upon the ungfaUbsl&gss of the Republican*.
