BE @ # § a i i 5 Ss a “ FRIDAY NOVEMBER dtl, 1870 | SINGULAR SUICIDE IN NEW ORLEANS. a A Young Gentleman and Lady Jump into the River. One of the most remarkable cases of guicide that hins ever startled the commu nity occurred at the footof Serapara street, ahout five o' clcek this (Tuesday) morning. A young mann ahd woman, bv mutual con gent, proectded to the river's edae, and, locking bands jumped into the river and were drowned. The name of the man is Andrew Ryan; he is about twenty-three years of frre, and a native of Ireland. The girl's names sdane Sweeny, seventeen years of age and a native of Scotland. It | has been ascertained that they were lovers, and for spme fim bid Been living in inti- | mate relations, The girl's natuge recoiled from this dis- reputabig life and Mer imporiunitics. have been incessant that he aveuld marry her. | The persuasions of her friends were also | added; and the man was finally given to understand that thig act of justice to the girl could be ng longer postponed. Her sin was the result of inexperience- of her friendless condition and affection fer him, These representations wera however, un- able to subdue ! iarepugnance to marriage, and he stated that he would rather die than submit te such an alternative. The girl, distracted'with grief, and mad, it may | be, with despair) repliéfl that if death was the offly alternative, the would share it with him. This has been going on for several days. Monday night they had an interview, and conversed for several hours | together!” The result of this interview has | been the“double suicide just committed. It is singular that two people could have | been led by passion and prejudice to such | a deed. =Phe glamour of romance is want- | ing to give a'coloring to a suicide of this | description. They could not have been excitedteit by those feelings which too | frequefMiy?lond the young and inexperi- | enced dstrav."*The resolution to commit a | deed samashyeame, no doubt, from obsti- | nancy ghithe part of the man—of despair | in the Meart:df the young, unfortunate girl. Indeed, it is one ofthose remarkable inci- dents in: huasan life for which no reasona- | ble cauSerean be assigned, and whose oc- | currengg, startle and shock the commu- nity. Yankee Robison's elephant hasbeen a lit- | tie ailifig for some time, and is now in Can- andaigua, New York confined to his bed, and unable to sit up. Itseemed tobe nothing | Botaslight cold at first, and hisnurse sweat him by giving him a hogs- | head of catnip tea, and pilitg two t ns of hay onhim. It then took theformofecroup, | which hive syrup failed to subdue. He | then complained of a slight hronchial dif- ficulty in the trunk, to cap the climax, the rheumatism put its wrench upon his knee. | To ease his pain, his physician intoxicated | him with a barrel of whiskey, whereupon | he rushed around the village, smashing windows, and, in the midst of his debauche- ry, fell down and broke one of his tusks short off. He still lies at the point of sick- ness. -Heis said to be worth $000, but is | not well enough to make his will The following is a recent decision in the Supreme Court of Maine, in the case of Goddard vs. the Grand Trunk | Railway Company: | The plaintiff, a passenger in the cars of the company, surrendered his ticket to the brakeman who was au- thorized to receiveit. Afterwaltds the brakeman denied receiving the ticket, | called the plaintiff a liar, charged him | with trying to avoid the payment of | his fare, ana with having done the | thing before; threatened to split his head open; shook his fist violently | jm the plaintiff’s face, and omly stop- | ped the assault when the whistle sounded for the next station. It ap- peared also that the plantiff’ was at the time in feeble health, having been for some time in the care of a physician ; | that he-had neither said nor done any- thing to provoke the assault; that he had paid his fare, received and surren- dered his ticket to the brakeman, who had delivered it to the conductor, in whcs2 hands it was afterwards identi- fied ; that the defendants were notified of the miseonu<t of brakeman, but mn- stead of distharginz him retained him in their service, where he was at tha time of the trial. In view of the ag gravated character of the assault, and the attendant circumstances, the jury rendered a verdict for the plaintiff’ of exeniplary damages to the amount of $4,800. The defendants alleged ex eeptions ; but the Supreme Court, in a very careful review of the case, ful. ly sustains the virdict, both on the ground of its intrinsic justice and of ublicTolicy. “LL. carrier’s obligation,” says the learned aud. thoreugh opinion of Judge Walton, “is to carry his pass- enger safely and properly, and to treat Lim respectfully, and if he in trusts the performance of this duty to his servants, the law holds him re- sponsible for the manner in which they exccute the trust. The Jaw seems to Le now wo'l settled that the cat1ir is obliged to protect his passen- ger from violence and in:ult, from whatever ‘source arising. He is not A et ela Fm First district, Samael J. The time has come when almost every Farmer wants amachine for all kinds of sawing, mortising, &c. To all I would say, dont buy before seeing the LITTLE GIANT. It has advantages possessed by no similar Machine, among which are the following : It is very small, light, and strong, with- out any unnecessary gearing, is furnished with a Fly-whee! for sawing and also one for boring, making the motion regular enough fur railway or any other power, without worrying the horses. It hax a larger capacity than any similar machine, being euprble of sawing 3 to 4 cords of wood, twice through, per hour, and boring 76 to 100 fence posts in the same time. 72-11 takes only two men to run it in posts“Gx 7 It points all kinds of rails ready to put in the fence and mortises posts ready to set up, at the rate of 50 to 60 per hour. 2z#& No matter how crooked the yosts are, it will mortise them with equal Rcility. : THE LITTLE GIANT Is always ready to run against any similar machine. Its superiority is established. It is impos- sible to get out of order and there is no wearing out to it. Fixtures for sawin fhingles are always put on when desired. Capacity, 5000 to 8000 per day.
