FRIDAY, APRIL 15th, 1870. lian For the Reporter. Mother. Angel mother, art thou watching O'er thy lonely child to night, Is thy gentle spirit guiding Me, iuto the path of right; Knowest thou that I am longing For a mother’s tender care. Aud my heart with memories throng: mg =) Breathes to heaven a silent prayer. That although thou art not with me, Here on earth my steps to guide, [ may always strive to meet thee Safely at the Savior's side. Often nt the hour of evening When I thrust dull care away, Then I hear a sweet voice calling All my thoughts from earth away, Then a mystic influence lures me Upward to thy heavenly home. And 1 see thee smile upon me. Hear thee say : lone wanderer come. Thus I silent sit, and ponder Over God's mysterious ways; While my heart is filled with wonder Still my soul is filled with praise. That with thee life's cares are ended, Now forever thou canst rest, And thy happy spirit blended With the holy and the blessed. STARLIGHT. nino For the Reporter. Spring Minis, April 5, 1870. Mr Editor: —I wish to inform you and the public that we de not intend to be slandered by such a small pota- to as G.W. We, as a community, think more of our reputation; yet we do not not think it has much bearing on the minds of intelligent people, it may leave an impression on the minds of some, yet we hope they will consider the source at least and we think that will be enough to convince them that we are not as ignorant as we were rep- resented. I wish to inform the gentle- man thgt we have a goodly number of men and women who have as much in- telligence and more education than he has. Relative to the school, he made some erroneous statements as we have as good a school as there is in the county, outside of the borough, which has been said, not ouly by ourselves, but by many teachers and superintend- ents ; so that we do not feel hurt at all, but simply wish to inform the people in the county that G. W. misrepresen- ted the Independent District. For a sample of G. W’s success in the school I will point you to the statistics in the last Reporter, and that is about the best he ean present. The gentleman alluded to who has three farms and would not purchase $2,00 worth of books, says he purchased all the books his children were able to study, or un- derstand ; and as regards the church, I thirk we can compete with any in- telligent community. As regards peo- ple coming in church and not being noticed, it is not to be expected any- where, and I am sorry to say the gen- tleman who had the audacity to criti- cise, practices it himself, and if he wishes to criticise others he should re- frain from so doing, and be a little more polite himself. I do not think he has forgotten much politeness; if he has, he has forgotten all he possess- ed. Now I think the gentleman has got hold of the wrong string this time. I think he will not try it soon again, if he does he will fare pretty nice. I will tell you how he used to speak to his scholars this winter ; he used to call them br ites an | Hotten'o s, and every. thing but their right names. Now this is correct and I can prove it and all I have asserted in this article, A man holding a professional certificate to use such language in a school room should be put out in justice to the scho'ars and patrons. The school has been a failure entirely, this term, and Prof. G. W. does not need to come in- to the Independent District for a good reputation. I will refer you to the directors and patrons if thisis not the truth. Regarding the literary society he spoke favorably, hut he omitted some ; the evening we appointed for so- ciety, Mr. G. W. appointed singing and was overruled, orour society would have fizzled ; then he tried to break it up, but did not have friends enough; and W. B. Krape was against G. W, for President and beat him, and when his term was out G. W. was elected President and that broke up the socie- ty at once, and his singing school broke up. Now I advise Prof. G. W. to keep cool and learn and become wise, and then write a sensible piece and redeem his reputation in the Fedopo clon: Dis- trict. Ie has insulted all the citizens in this section. The Prof. took six pills on the head of the article he sent the Reporter, to work as a cure. I think he will fare well soon ; his school numbets 16 and his labor is easy. I hope the gentleman will not need pills on the head of this. =~ Vox PoruLr. re fp fp pen A watchmaker in Meriden, Conn, has on exhibiton in his shop an old watch, with only an hour hand and a common catgut for a winding chain. It hasa bras: case, but was originally enclosed in a huge tortoise shell. The inscription on the watch is *“W. Lee, No. 21658,” making it two hundred and twelve years old, undoubtedly the oldest running watch in America. It keeps excellent time, not varying two minutes a week. e = mopman — afi A — ve Mrs. Rosa Aun Schaadt, of Lock Iaven, one day last week, stepped up- on a large nail, which passed throu. the sole of her shoe and into her foot, ix consequence of which she died of lock-juw, a few days following. a : oo —— — Several small boys in Hunticgdon amused themselves a few days ago by playing at hanging and came very near turning the farce into tragedy, the breaking of the rope alone saving the life of the lad who had volunteered to become the culprit, iniliton di > Imprisonment for debt has at length been abolished in Rhode Island. Ho It cannot have escaped the notice of readers of congressional proceedings that the defendersand apologists of the adminis- tration in the House of Representatives have been struggling to overcome the state- ments made a few days ago by Mr, Beek in relation to the governm ant expenditures. These statements and the figures by which they were substantiated, are so damaging and explode so completely the false pro- fessions of economy put forth by theandmin- istration, that the radical speakers have felt the necessity of making an effort, at least to overeome thew, but, like all others who attempt to combat stubborn facts, they have been worsted and have utterly failed, Mr. Beck being a member of the Com- mittee on Appropriations speaks by the card and his statement cannot fail to interest taxpayers. We, therefore, reproduce some of them, He said: The Chairman Appropriations and the Speaher of the House—the one in a speech and the other had announced as a fact that President Johnson had expended $368 000,000 during the last year of his adminstration, und during the first year of Cen Grant's ad- ministration the expenditures had been reduced to $314,000,000, The expenditures of the current year were nearer S100.000,000 then $314,000, - 000. He (Beck) had offered a resolution in the House requiring the Secretary of the Treasury to furnish a full statement of all unexpended balances in each of the bran- ches of each department onthe 80th of June, 1869, estimating the sums that wonld be required to defray the expenses incurred in the previous year, and showing, also, the whole amount that would be subject to the dispositon of Congress for the year 1870-71. Te that resolution the Secretary of the Treasury sent the statement giving in detail the amount of balance applicable tothe various departments under his control. The recapitulation showed, that the War, Navy, Interior, State Treasury and other Departments, the balance in hand on the 30th of June was $102,300,156. There was appropriated for the fiseal year ending June 30, 1870, for these departments, $111, 788,000, making a total applicable to those purposes of over $213,000.00. from which was to be deducted about $9,000,000 to be expended in the subsequent year, leaving $206,101,483 for the expenditures for the years 1860-70. This was an excess of $94, 367,626 over the amount appropriated for these purposes for thecurrentyear. Every dollar of that ninety four millions had been left outofthe account bythe Speaker and by the Chairman of the Committee on Ap- propriations, and by the President of the Urited States in the statements they had made to the country, as to the actual expenditures so that theactual expenditures would amount to within fraction of $1,000,000, Mr. Benjamin, of Missouri, desired to know how, if the government had about so much money last year, it happened that there was any money left to bring about a large reduction of the public debt? Mr. Beek would tell the gentleman how that was done. If the gentleman would read the Speaker's letter, he would find that. as he said, there had been collected $301,000,000 during the last year, besides the surplus collected the year before and he (Beek) had no doubt that the govern- ment had so much money on hand because that $94,000,000 of unexp ended balance had been used to meet exp enses for which there had been no chages in the appropriation bill. Mr. Benjamin, Do I understand the gentleman to say that there were S04,000-, 000 of unexpended balances at the com- mencement of the present fiscal year? Mr. Beck. There were unexpebted balances to the mmount of $102,399, 156, and the Secretary certifies that only eight mil- lions of that can be carried forward to the next fiscal year; so that all the balances will be expended together with the actual appropriations of this year. about $200,- 000,000. We have here not only the main fact, that the expenditures of this wonderfully economical administration will reach this year the enormous sum of four hundred million dollars, but tha additional fact is exposed that an attempt has been made to deceive the country by false statements, It is for the people to decide how long they will maintain the rule of men who pratice deception and squander their means.
