A Mormon preacher has discovered that all the world is after is to try to make the Lord come to its terms and hie wont do it. All “brands” of liquor are alike in one respect at least, namely—they are firebrands that inflame the passions, and consume the soul. The promises of retrenchment and economy made by the Radical party, previous to the last Presidential elec- tion, are not being carried out by Gen. Grint, so far as the White House is concerned. Under Mr. Johnson's ad- ministration, sixteen hundred dollars per annum was the whole expense of paying ushers for the President's resi- dence. Now according to the New York Herald, “there is Dent, a full Brigadier, with salaiy of five thou sand dollars per annum ; Crook, receiv- ing one thousand six hundred dollars ; Price, likewise one thousand six htin- dred dollars; young Douglass, two thousand five hundred dollars; Adams, one thousand six hundred dollars: Simonds, a gentleman of color, ninety three dollars per month for simply bearing cards of visitors from the em- inently polite Dent to the President's private office. All these officials com- bined discharge the duty which Cushaw monopolized under Johnson, In other words, it now requires thirteen thou- sand three hundred and eighty dollars to accomplish the laborious business of attending to the White House vis- itors, while it only cost one thousand six hundred dollars under Johnson.” This is radical economy and retrench ment.— ge. In lasts week's Reporter we gave an account of the election riot in Wash. ington city, instituted by the negro radicals at the national capital, where bloodshed and riot were the order of the day, and when white American citizens, Democrats, could only ap- proach the polls at the 1isk of their lives. The brutal negroes of Wash- ington, incited by their white radical brethern, acted like demons, and had the national capitol under their feet, on the late election day in that city. What a humiliating spectacle, for the white Ameriern freeman, to be driven away from the polls and murdered in the national capital, under the eyes of Presidant Grant, for endeavoring to exercise the rights of an American eiti- zen ! For years a great abolition hue and cry was raised over the downtrodden Negro, and because he was denied the right to vote. The abolition party gets into power, it frees the slave, makes the stupid negro a voter, and one of the first acts of the “man and brother” is, to drive white men from the polls, and mob conservative Africans, for vo- ting as their judgment tells them it is right. When the abolition party succeeds country, such cisgraceful scenes as were witnessed in Washington, the other day, will constantly be enacted, and where there isa large negro pop- ulation, the white citizen will have to keep in doors, if he does not wish his head smashed by the enfranchised ne- gro radieal. St. Domingo will be re- vived in the United States—the ne- gro riot in Washington city plainly In many. ‘of the Southern States the negro population is in the majority, and this element the carpet- says 80, seeking to incite against the southern whites. The final result of the teach- ings of these New England demons, will be a war of races, which must end with the total extermination cf either the whites or blacks. History fur- nishes us terrible examples hereof, White freemen, are you willing that your own race shall be butchered by the negroes, who are educated up to such deeds by wicked radical leaders? Will you continue to support a party which is breeding a war of races, and will make a second San Domingo of the sunny South, re-enacting those horrible deeds of blood and fire which desolated that once rich and beauti- ful island, when every white man, wo- man and child was brutally butchered and every home laid in ashes, by the negroes after they were enfranchized by a party like that which seeks to en- franchize the negro in the United States? Oh! our country, what chan- ges it has undergone, since the good old days of democratic rule! Previous to the late Presidential election, the Radicals held up the suc- cess of that party as the panacea for all the evils afflicting the nation. Elect General Grant, and prosperity will flow in upon the nation and indi- viduals like a spring tide, said the ora- tors and journals of the party in pow- er. Grant is President, Congress has met, acted and adjourned, a Cabinet has been appointed, and what is the re- sult? Let the St. Lowis Republican answer. “Gold is nine or ten per cent. higher than it was at the inauguration, and constantly fluctuates with the fluctuating policy of the administra tion. Business of all kinds is depres- ged, and constantly becoming more so in all the centres of business through- out teh country. Trade, commerce and manufactures languish, and, lan- guishing, seem :ikely to die. Mer- chants everywhere are despondent, goods'do not sell, bankruptcies are a- Jarmingly freugent, mills of every des- eription are stopping daily, mechanics and other laborers are out of employ- ment, while their families are star- ying, money can be had only at ruinous and panic rates, and not only is there no prospect or rational hope of ahy immediate or speedy improvement; but there is # widespread aud deep apprehension in all commercial pe other circles that the future w darker than the past of the present.” DONT Gentle reader, don't for the world allow he important fact to escape. your mind that the place to buy your new Spring and Sum- mer goods of every description which have been bought at panic prices, and are now arriving and opened for inspection at the familiar place you often READ g A ; abolit, ZIMMERMAN BROS. & ¢0., No. Six, Bush's Arcade, Bellefonte, Pa.
