sinc dni CENTRE HALL REPORTER. mma (Joe 4 3 : OxxTre Hate, Pa. Feb. 12th 1860, The Clover and Lime Theory In Practice. Wo have had much to say upon the benefits of using lime and clover upon worn out soils, to give them a start. And yet we are apprehensive that many of our readers have regarded the matter as mainly theoretical, and will not be induced to try it. Although agriculture is admitted to be-a-tenta- tive art, some things ave'settled as well experiment. Among them is the utili- ty of applying lime to' soils that have not already enough of it, and cropping with elover to add vegetable matter and ammonia to thin, light soils, or those that do not give remunerative erops. Ina recent trip over the line of the New Jersey Central Railroad, we saw abundant evidence of the reno vation of worn-out farms. ‘Thirty years ago these fakuls ‘were unproductive, and many.ef their, owners wore anx- ious to sell out at thirty dollars an acre and emigrate:; r It was difficult. to sell at any price. Noone will have to go far tofind a. more beautiful farming region then stretches from Plainfield, N: J, to Easton Pa. Farmes are worth from $125 to $200 per aere, and are constantly increasing in value. It is true some of this ‘rise is Cue to the railroad, which affords better facilities for marketing, ‘but the most of it is owing te the better management of the land. They make more of clover than in regular Pennsylvania rotations, as it comes in oftener. The rotation is: 1, corn upon a clover od, limed ih), oats; 3, wheat, with the manure of the farm ; 4, clover, to be cut or pastured. the great change in the value of their lands to this rotation. The crops are luxuriant, and the wheat fields as promising as in any part of the West, In all the better farming districts of Pennsylvania, similar results are mani fest. Clover and lime, in egnnection with tne manure upon the place, keep the farms in good heart, and constant- ly improving. The average produc- tion of wheat and corn in these dis- tricts is much higher than in the Wes- tern States, which had ‘#®aricher soil. Wherever this treatmentiof the soil has been introduced, it’ secures the most satisfactory results, Wedo not see how this management of the soil can be considered as pertaining merely to the theory of agriculture. Yet the mass of our farmers in the Eastern States continue to raise clover in small patches, as a forage crop, without re- ference to its valve as a renovator of thesoil. If they would travel more line of their art, they would form better views, both of the theory and practice of agriculture.
