CHioksY, 4 LA MiLirarre—Our
jolly friend, Sam. Gutelius, at Aarons
ry fias a ¥Yoong chicken, now half
grown, which is quite a curiosity in its
ling; It walks erect, straight as Sam
himself, and seems proud of its defor-
mity, and puts on no few military airs.
When Samuel first presented the little
feathery evsature to our eyes, the
thought striek us, that, supplied with
a cocked hat and sabre, (spurs it has,)
it might be passed off as some military
cheiftain having the republican nomi-

Svicipe.—We are sorry to inform
our renders, that Mr. Jacob Royer, from
near Madiconburg committed suicide,
on last ¥anday forenoon, between 10
and 32 o'clock, by hanging himself in
the gartet of his houde. Mr. «Royer |
had gore to church that morning, and
shortly after the sermon commenced, he
left, and was found afterwards upon
the garret, where he had hung himself.
He was one of themost respected citi-
zens of Miles fp, and pecuniary troub-
les, it is thought, led him to this step.
TE Bsip Roap.—We understand
$3000 have been subscribed te defray
expenses for a survey of the much talk-
ed-of Mifflin & Centre rail-road, and
that a corps of engineers will soon be
set to work for a rout. na |
This road, if possible, should erter the
eastern portion of our valley, and run
westward through the same. This
can be done by striking some point on
Penns Creek, then following along that
stream—such a route would benefit the
greater portion of the valley. We
think it would be advisable for the
citizens of Hains, Penn, Gregg and
Potter townships, to raise means, in
order to secure the survey of such a
route, and this they should do at once,
so that whenever the corps of engineers
get to work, the funds will be on hand
for such a survey. 3
