THE. ALLEGHENY CEAIETERY
We paid a vial, on Saturday, to the Allegheny
Cemetery. a charming spot which nature and art
have equally combined to embellish. The petaci
pal gateway is a beautiful structure of stone, in
the Gothic style, and redacts great credit upon its
talented archetect, John Chalon, Esq. Passing
through it, the signer strolls along roads and paths
several mile. in length, surrounded on all sides
by some of the 111.1 t picturesque scenery ra the
neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Within it. bounda
ries a to be found almost every varier, of carfare
—hill end valley, shaded by the noble oaks and
forest trees planted here by the hand of nature, as
well as by the rarer, though not more beautiful
natives of distant oenntries. Through the grounds
rum a brook, the 'ascent! murmuring of which
adds tranquillity to the natural solemnity attending
'a place of groves."
Twesty yeara ago, no cry in the trotted States
hod a cemetery. The crowded church yards, in
the midst of the noise and bustle of bun.ss towns
received daily additions, until the miasma arising
from them became exceedtogly unpleasant to those
who dwelt around, and the dead brought death
to the living; but ' , even from the tomb the voice of

their full forrce those beautiful lines of Kies

purchased. Oa the IkUiti of September, the grounds
were dedicated by appropriate religious ceremo

la the month of Oetolier, trees began to be plant

of Mr. Mullett. and his good taste is every whore
visible. &nee that time upwards of two thousand
evergreens, consisting apiece, yews, together
with an equal number of deciduous trees, and
thousands of shrubs of carton, k,nds have been
planted.
We are pleased to sea that the cemetery is vu

which, to the absence 1.11 s public garden, has long

use in raising the tone or public taste, through the

chief charm. None elm visit it, without tenting a
degree of cheerful solemnity stealing over the,;
