Harm Catlin GlSL—Moreson Knox of Alkw
glieny, was yesterday brought before his honor
lodge Hepburn, by 'virtue of o writ of Habeas
Corpus, in order (hit the cyameion of whether or
not he was entitled to bail, might be determined.
Mr. Knox had been arrested and committed to
prison by the Mayor of Allegheny, on a charge of
conspiracy and anon. Messrs. Barka and Stew
art, on the pun of the relator, maintained that the
commitment was irregular, and defective, and
that the prisoner ought to be dischnrged. As,
however, Mr. Knox wished the matter inquired
into, ranee he leafed no investigation, they, (the
counsel), had no wish to take any technical ad.
vantage, and would only insist on his being ad
mitted to bail.
Mr. Darragh on the part of the commonwealth,
wished that the bail should be reeponrible, es the
offence was clearly bailable.
His honor Judge Hepburn remarked that the
violation of all law and just.ce at the late fire in
Allegheny, had been very flagrant, and that, as
Mr. Knox stood charged on the oath of respect
able citizen, of a heinous offence connected with
it, be felt it his duty, thongs he hoped that Mr. K.
was innocent, to require heavy bail. He would
therefore direct that Mr. Knox should give bail to
the amount of three thousand dollars, conditioned
for his appearance al the next court of quarter
sessions., and himself enter into recognizances, to a
like remount.
Dr. Dickson, of Allegheny, immediately entered
intn the required rerognizanees, and Mr. Knot
was discharged.
Tan LATE VTRI.—We paid a visit yesterday to
the ruins of the hoaxes burned in the fire of
Monday afternoon, and as we gazed upon them,
could not help thinking of the fearful guilt incurred
by those who would not only render no assistance
while the property wne being consumed, but even
impeded the efforts of those who drove to extin
guish the flames 'The Nooses all around the burnt
district, covered, as the roofs are, with the salt
strdarn upon them to prevent the sparks setting
tire to them, present a dismal appearance.
A long time will elapse era that part of Allen
