In the Select Council, the several returns
having been received and read, and the members
sworn, the Council proceeded to elect their peel&
dent. The Hon. Harmer Denny and Jahn Ship•
ton Esq. were the only nominees. On the eighth
hollot the vote stood,

Alderman John Mhjor was tmanimously elected
clerk and Mr. James Wright messenger.
The Clerk was then iceitructed to announce to
the Common Council that the Select Council was
organized.

called to the chair—most of the members being to
their seats.
There was a conaiderable arbandamoe of citizens
behind the bar of the Council.
The chairman said that for the information of
die. new members he would read the that page of
the rules directing -the proceedings of the calax
cil at their organization meetings.

man proceeded to read the return. from the serer.

The usual oath was then administered to the
council by- Alderman Major—that they would
each faithfully perform their duties as members
