The death of oar estimable citizen, Mr. Hays, has been a cause of general mourning. About noon the shops, stores and ware houses were gen erally closed, and oar streets wore rather the as pect of sacred holy-day than of business. It was touching in the extreme to observe the' general sympathy in favor of the deceased. The firemen of the various companies were all in sited. dance, and formed themselves in fines around the dwelling of Mr. Hays. At half past one o'clock the procession started in the flowing order:— Eagle Fire Company, (of which Mr. Hays was a member) consisting of about one hundred end eighty members, all wearing mourning badges,— Next three earriages--containing the principal friends of the deceased. Next the hearse, conveying the body. After. wards followed fiftysfour carriages. There were about 3000 persons—aa nearly as we could estimate—who followed the funeral as far as the toll gate. These turned off right and left in good file, allowing the carriages to pass—the whole body lifting their hats, while the corpse rind the ac compaaying carriages passed along. All the fire , men except those of the Eagle Company remained on this side of the toll bar. The procession went on to the Cemetery, moving slowly and solemnly, until they arrived at the house of the Superinten. dant of the Cemetery. At this point the members of the Eagle Compaey tiled off, uncovering their heads, while the carriages and the hearse procee ded to the grave. The coffin was covered with black cloth and or nernented with a plain silver plate bearing the Wowing i ascription— Aged 35 years, 3 months and twenty two days, The corpse was then deposited in the grace, after which, the Rev. Mr. Swift addressed the assembly, in the to/lowing words : Assns ALT TIR GRAVE. There, my young friends, we deposit the re mains of an excellent young man, and a worthy and estimable citizen, whose if. wan suddenly and unexpectedly taken, while in the performance of an act of kindness to others.
