PITTSBOUGH BOARD OF TRADE
COMMMEF. POE SEPTEMBER.
soetIVA HsSRA. Wx. BARBEL J. ...ROTHE.,
Orrice PITTSBURGH GARCUTS.
Saturday Morning, Sept. 16 1548.
The markets yesterday were generally without
animation, and the salmi, which were limited,
showed little, if any imporynt change in any arti
cle, with the exception °flour, which is decided,.
ly on the decline.
The weather, since the rain, has become quite
cool. The river is beginning to swell a little, and
we think there is a prospect of a rim of some one
Of lOW feet; by which happy result, business will
revive again, and the busy fall trade will take the
place of the general lethargy which has prevailed
in the market, owing to the low stage of water.
Very hula freight is passing through at present.
Owing to the anticipated rise, there seems to be a
general holding back of freights for lower rates.
PLUM—The receipts yesterday were light,
and as a good portion of it was designed for east
ere shipment, very little was left, to operate upon•
Qom fug hands. Sates of a few limited lots were
effected at the river et 41 , 9 505.5# bbl. Sales from
store were light, and ranged from 5,25 to 5,37 p
bbl. Sales were made from wagon at 4,70, 4,80
and 4,87 p bbl, according to quality.
GRAIN—Very little is doing in the market, and
we bear of no change in prices since yesterday's
quotations.
GROCERIES—The market remains firm, and
prices continue very firm. N 0 sugar is selling
by the hhd in small lots at ZeSte, and some a lit.
de inferior at ilcs fr RI. Of N 0 molasses at 28 to
30c yr gall as in quality. Of Rio coffee at 7s to Se
in a small way; large sales would go at lower fig
tires. Sales of sugar house molasses at 40 to Vac
► gall, and of rice et 4i to 53c p lb.
PICIVISIONS--No change in the market. Reg.
°kir sales are erected at farmer rates.
SEEDS—SmaII salmi of timothy at $1,75, of

completed and ready for navigation in the Spring,
at a cost - less than the estimates. From Terre
Haute to Point Commerce, 42 miles, was placed
ender contract in May last, with a navigable feed
er of 5 miles, malting in all 47 miles, to be com
pleted in 1842. A farther letting, from Point Com

How Tie AND TITRIMITIMI Garrse--The
principal pursuits of the inhabitants in many pla
ces near the sea coast of the Southern Staten is
th a t of getting turpentine. It is made from the
pines with which they abound, almost to the ex
clusion of every other Sanest tree. Manyrersons
have no other means of a livelihirod than this em
ployment, especially those of the poorer Masses.
Aa soon as the sap begins to min in the wain.,
a notch is made near the root of the tree to catch
the turpentine. This is called boring the tree.—
Then it is dipped out, generally with a simple
gourd, into buckets, which are rimptied Int o barrels
on the spot. These are ready for markrd RS soon
as they are all filled.
Another small portion of tbe tree lope red off and
the nap again descends freely into the re recepta
cles. Under this operation, a pine v rill usuab y
live for six or oven yams, and is r wed in this
manner until it is thus deprived of its bark, and a
small portion of its trunk to the Rai& it of ten or

On• man, it is calculated, can :Men d 7000 boo en

they can yield no more turpentine, ir re cut up into
small pieces, and then piled in brines to make tar,
which is only turpentine heated and smoked.—
The whole in then covered with dirt, and a moth

While burning, the kiln is caivfully watched

The great Telegraph Cane Address of Mr. o'.
Reilly to the people of Kentucky, is pal:dished in the
Journal and Courier of this morning. The Con.
rier has e 1111'011R article on the subject, from which
the following is an extract
.Our readers will see that despite of the has
mense field, Judge Monroe thought proper to cov.
er in his singular judgment on the motion for a n
injunction against Henry O'Reilly and others—
Mr. O'Reilly's line to New Orleans will not sus.
pend its operations; we are glad to find that this
is the case, for we think that this suit involves
a larger amount of public interest than any thing
that has been brought before the Western Court
for many years. We have not the slightest dis
trust as to the ultimate decision of the case. We
feel just as sure of seeing the whole judgment of
Judge Monroe overthrown, as we do of anything-,
if his views are correct, then all christendom is in
the wrong, and we cannot bring ourselves to think
that Judge Monroe is alone in the right. The whole
article io the Courier is in the same strong tone.—
Mr. O'Reilly's address states:
That so far from stopping operations on this
New Orleans line, work will go forward more ra
pidly than ever, He will lay aside the Columbian
telegraph in Kentucky, for the present, and will
use the new Kentucky telegraph, mode on par.
pose to meet the emergency. Mr. OR. and his as
sociates are chartered by the Kentucky Legislature
for making this line to New Orleans Nearly 700
miles of that line is now working, and the whole 1000
miles will be in successful operation in a kw
weeks. He says he can arrange twenty different
sorts of telegraphs, and every one of them will be
worked before any part of that or any other line
he has constructed, shall be delayed for a single
day. The Southerly portion of the O'Reilly line is
now working from New Orleans to Baton Row..
and the Northerly section is working from Loma
vile to Nashville, Tuscumbia, Menipb.s, and Holly
Springs. The wiring will soon be finished between
Tuscumbia and Baton Rouge, and then the light.
ning will flash freely between New Orleans .d
the Western and Northern cities by the O'Reilly
lines It will be about as easy to catch a streak
of lightning as to stop the operations of these
lines.

Mr. William Secore's Letter to Drs. Ivan, and Hart
I have spent over three thousand dollars for medi

England. I consulted the most eminent physician•
there in respect to his case; they examined him and
presenbed accordingly. I remained threemonths
without perceiving any change for the better, which
cost me about two hundred and fifty dollars pocketed
by the physicians, and the most that I received was
their opinion that my eon's case with hopeless and post.
lively incurable. I accordingly left England, and trav
elled through tr.-otiand. Germany and Prance, and ma
turned home in the month of November last, with my
win as far from being cured as when I left. I saw your
advertisement in one of the New York papers, and
concluded to try Hare's Vegetable Extrnet, seeing your
statements and certificates of so many cur., some of
