variation in prices from previous day's quotations•
The weather continues cool and dry, and the
river is slowly receding, with some 20 inches in

FLOUR—Very little is doing in the market, and I
prices are slowly advancing. The receipts yea
terday amounted to about 450 bbls by river, nearly ,
all of which is designed kw immediate shipment
east. Several small lots were disposed of at the
river at 5,3105,37. Small sales were effected
from wagon at 5.k505,3'7, and from store by dray
l oa d lots a t 5,370450 p bbl, according to quality.
In Provisions we find no change. Bacon and
lard continues firm at Wale" quotations, and no I
change is apparent in other articles under this
head.
The Grocerrmarket is steady with regular sales
to the trade at full prices.
OlLS—Owing to the light receipts and small
supplies of linseed oil, the article has advanced 10
cts in the gall, with limited sales at 85c p gall, by
the bbL Lard oil continues firm di 51052 c p gall,
and Tanners at $l7 to 519 p bbl, as in quality.
GREEN APPLES—SaIes at the river in small
lota at Ello to 81,25 p bbl, according to quality.
CHEESE--Sales 20 boxes good W R at 5108 c

One of the most terrible destructive fires that Moil
visited any of our lary• Cities for th. last five years,
occurred in Brooklyn, lest of t, &mail Ping
area equal to at least fifteen acres 01 gaol lest and
most central part of the city. It broke out about
I I o'clock, in a feather More, occupied by a Mr.
Drew, near the junction of Henry and Fulton
streets, and in a most inflammable neighborhood,
the buildings being meetly built of wood.
There being little or no water at hand, the flames I
swept on in their resistless and unobstructed way.

upon it. To day being Sunday, there is no access
to the public records to ascertain either.
Among the most valuable buildings are three
churches., the Universalist, corner of Fulton and
Pineapple streets, Mr. Thayer, pastor; the Baptist
church, corner of Liberty and Nassau, and the'
Methodist E. Church, in Sands street, the oldest
Methodist church in Brooklyn, of which nothing
but the bare walls remain. s
Back of this last church I traveled over some
hundred graves covered with the burning ashes,
and charred remnants of the church, the marble
slabs, many of them of beautiful workmanship,
cracked and blackened by the devouring element,
still uplifting their heads as if to add to the melee.

Long Island Star.
The new Free Soil paper, the Barnburner amain

of Cranberry and Fulton, occupied as hardware
stores below, and ribovA by Temperance and

Livery_ Stable on Henry street, owned by Whitton

The most melancholy of all other events is the loss
of two valuable lives.

The dame raged with the greatest fury from 110
o'clock last evening until 8 o'clock this morning,
when they were finally extinguished by blowing
up several houses on Concord street,
The number of buildings destroyed will nearly
reach two hundred, covering an area of about fif
teen acres in the very beam of the city. The lass
