Pluses Arm, f tks City Mr-Aress—lane , Lost. New Yoax,lSept. 10, P. M. One of the most terrible destructive fires that Moil visited any of our lary• Cities for th. last five years, occurred in Brooklyn, lest of t, &mail Ping area equal to at least fifteen acres 01 gaol lest and most central part of the city. It broke out about I I o'clock, in a feather More, occupied by a Mr. Drew, near the junction of Henry and Fulton streets, and in a most inflammable neighborhood, the buildings being meetly built of wood. There being little or no water at hand, the flames I swept on in their resistless and unobstructed way. South and East, crossing Middah, Cranberry sod Orange streets, on both sides of Henry, and burn. ' mg out eight squares to Washington street, lea, ing a block of eight houses on the corner of Pine , apple end Henry, and a portion of the houses be. tureen Orange and Sands streets on the East, so that there was no staying the all devouring element till it had reached the wider streets of Pineapple and Washington, which marks its blackened boon darien. Two hundred and fifty houses and stores at least ' have been destroyed; some place the number as high as three hundred. Of course there is no tel. ling the amount of damage done, or the insurance upon it. To day being Sunday, there is no access to the public records to ascertain either. Among the most valuable buildings are three churches., the Universalist, corner of Fulton and Pineapple streets, Mr. Thayer, pastor; the Baptist church, corner of Liberty and Nassau, and the' Methodist E. Church, in Sands street, the oldest Methodist church in Brooklyn, of which nothing but the bare walls remain. s Back of this last church I traveled over some hundred graves covered with the burning ashes, and charred remnants of the church, the marble slabs, many of them of beautiful workmanship, cracked and blackened by the devouring element, still uplifting their heads as if to add to the melee. choly spectacle. Snatched from the burning walls by some faithful band e'er the work of ruts was uomplete I marked among these sad mementos of the depa rted, a beautiful white marble slab, upon nn Egyptian ground, bearing the ollowing inscrip• lion, which the fire had left unscathed; Beneath the Altar lie the remains of the Ray. John Summerfield, A. M., died June 13, 1625, aged 27, also, the remains of bin lather, Wm. Summer field, died September 19th, Isz, aged 55. Beside these are the large Franklin block, owned by Mr. Crary containing about thirty stores. thr American Mechanic's Lodge, and the office of the Long Island Star. The new Free Soil paper, the Barnburner amain the same office. Hall's Exchange buildings, corner of Cranberry and Fulton, occupied as hardware stores below, and ribovA by Temperance and Religious Societies for thew meetings. A large Livery_ Stable on Henry street, owned by Whitton Powell, and many others I bare not Lime to enu merate, all of which will reach you in due season. The most melancholy of all other events is the loss of two valuable lives. FURTHER PARTICI'LARS. The dame raged with the greatest fury from 110 o'clock last evening until 8 o'clock this morning, when they were finally extinguished by blowing up several houses on Concord street, The number of buildings destroyed will nearly reach two hundred, covering an area of about fif teen acres in the very beam of the city. The lass is estimated as high as one million of dollar. I The burned district is bounded by Fulton, Hen-' ry, Pine Apple, and Washington, streets. Low. renew were effected in the following offices: The Long Island Company, the Brooklyn Company, th e Etna Company of Hartford, and a Philadelphia Company. the name of which is not ascertained.— The latter Company have $13,000 on the Baptist Church. The Long Island Company will pay all their liabilities and have a large surplus left. The Brooklyn Company will sink their enure capital, but will be able to pay a large per wmage of their Gebilmea Hall's large building on Fulton street, was en. urely destroyed. Rooms were occupied by several Odd Fellow Lodges. Their furniture, valued at 84000, was s' also destroyed. The dwelling was fully insured. The crowd on the Fulton Ferry Bridge Was so great that it gave way and many were prectpita. ted - into the water. One fireman was drowned, and others were severely injured. Edward Crow. ley. of Company 22, was run over and matantly led. The mune, of 200 occupants of stores and dwellings have been ascertained. The sufferers are moldy merchants, laborers and storekeepers.-- A number of thieves have been arrested and ma. prsoned for stealtrig at the tire.
