‘ Wehaye-an idea of writings* dictionary of oar
own, to illastrate.lhe modem interpretation given
to good dldtahiooed words.; If principles do not
change,—which, by the way, is an axiom not alto,
gather true,—ideas of principles certainly da Ed
mund Burke has wisely written somewhere, that
“it cannot too often be repeated, line upon line, and
precept upefat precept, until it paasea into tbo cur
rency of a prove*, that to innovate is not torc
fonn.” We -wish bur so-called reformers vtjould
more frequently remember, practice and love* this
truth. Calling things by their right names is afreet
virtue; and, in reality, is often but another name
for truth itself The following will illostrate, in
part, what we mean:
“Not at Hoxe.”—ft lady says she is not at liome
to a visiter when she is either too much engaged,
or too indolent, or not sufficiently dressed to see her
friends. Sie-has not courage to tell the truth, and
so she tells what the world <*■»!?« an excusable.lie.
The woman lies to the maid, the maid to the visit
er; and thus, by frequency of repetition, the lie be
comes fastuanable and contagious. “Not tit home*’
means directly the reverse of what'it says!
Tsx Soitl of Hoxoa.—A man is said to possess
the soul of honor when, upon the slightest pffertee,
or without offence, he is ready to take the hfo otn
follow mam - ’
Cowaud—Onc who fears God more tban\maa._
Aoxso-foeth, ato-so-fobth.—Certain appends
ges to a letthr or article in a newspaper,-or words
used in conversation. When a man says Aciifd,
you may be sure, that, in ten of a dozen
because he has nothing more to say.
A Smaht Cuxlb.—A child is often considered
smart that says “I won’t” and “I wijl,” “I can’t" and
“I shaft-" What is regarded ns very pretty at five
and six, is | looked upon as intolerable at ten and
twelve. Could parents remember the contagion of
ran.eyil example, arid the corruption lhat J follows
from‘evil teachings, they would pause long before
recognising such smartness with a smile of appro
bation. :
Ajsiart FAUCfT.— How many mothers are there
who, without meaning it, teach their children to
•peak and ridfaltefy for life. For an example: a
mother says to a little chilth-and perhaps immediate
ly after teaching it to say the Lord’s prayer, “lie
doviftfand'l will go to sleep with you," or if not the
motherjihe promise is made by. some one else.
The child aritb the greatest confidence in its parent
or confidence that embodies a greater a'
mount of faith than even tbe best men in
the world have in .their Creator,—finds itself de
ceived in this small matter, and forever after, even
from so slight a cause aa this, will distrust its pa
rent The mother makes a promise to the child,
which she does not mean to even in the
feigned sleep of a moment designed to gratify a
child, a lie u acted that may exert aa evil influence
for life. T)liis may seem a small matter, but it js a
subject that parent’s should remember, it may; like
other small matters, become great Never act a lie
no more than you would *peak one. Never make
a promise :t£al you do not mean to keep. A child
ha-i been badly taught whose teasing you hare to
answer with a broken promise. t a.
Death nr CHLoaorota—Mrs. Siraonds, wife
of Mr. Siroonds, a Plane maker on Foorth street,
Cincinnati, died a few days ago while under tbe
inflaettce {Of Chloroform, at a dentists. After the
operation -on her teeth, she seemed to revive for a
moment, and was then ‘seized with violent con
vulsions, after the cessation of which, she became
gradually insensible. Every effort was made to
restore her, but in vain.
The Cthbinnati Gazette adds.—A post mortem
examination of Mrs. Simonds has been made.—
We hare! seen none of the profession who were
present at! it, hat are advised that it was not a very
satisfactory one. The heart, and its large vessels,
which areigenerally much distended, were found
to have no blood in them; but there were do indi
cations, as many supposed, that there had been a
sudden or, unusuti rush of blood to ths head. The
vessels of; the brain were not overcharged. There
waa'somelblood found in places where it ought not
to have been, but not enough to
the functions of jife.
There is no doubt entertained, we believe, lliat
too much of ihe Chloroform was administered to
Mrs. but as to ibe exact manner in which it oc
casioned her death—or whether a person in per-'

| WASHmcrrori, March 2,1545.
The maft from New Orleans’has brought a great
tnazs of letters from Mexico, and they are not all
filled with praises of Mr. Polk’s suspension of Gen.
Scott. This most impolitic and unwarrantable
step has caused 'great* excitement in Mexico,
not only among the American Army, .but with
the Mexicans, who are unable to understand why
a General who has been so successful, should be
treated with contumely. - [
