The call for the State Convention, which U to meet in this city on the lint day of July, for the purpise of choosing candi dates for Governor land Judge of the Su preme Court, la addressed to “the loyal cit izens of Pennsylvania without distinction of party, who desire oordially to unite in •Detaining, the., National and State admin istration* in their patrlclio effort* to Sup pree* a’ notional land unholy rebellion against the unity of the Republic,” and i* in perfect harmony with our oounty oall, pub lished in it* appropriate place, and of which we have already apoken in approba tion. | In the present perilous crisis in our country's history, this form of a oall is:em inently right and I proper; for the only question no* before ns is, Union or Dis nion. This swallows np all other issnss, and this la' tha only thing that truly loyal men .ears, comparatively speaking, any thing about. It is therefore right that Union should be emblasoned upon our ban ■ ner, that it ahould Oe our our motto, our-rallying jary, our means and our end, and that there should be union among the people for the sake of the Union. The claims of our country, which arc para mount to those of party, require of us, while it is in peril, to lay aside our party distinctions, and rally ** one man to the support of the Government against its trai torous enemies, eT*n though we may oon tinue to differ for I the time being as to minor issues. The great heart of the American people beats instinctively true to the Union; and but for the sophism! and false teachings of men who are resolved to uphold their party, even if in so doing they should subvert the government and shiver the Union to atoms, there would be no neoessity for Union Leagues or 1 Union parties. But we know there is a strange knd sad neoessity for both—just as much so as there is for armiss and for conscription! laws. The great mass of those who profess to be Democrats would be as loyal as thsir Bepobliean fellow-oit- Issns, were it kot for the pernicious teach ings of their leader!. When we say their leaders, wo-do not mean their ablest and best men, but we mean the men who have the control of tbs machinery of the party low, sordid,'.heartless creatures, who would lay the country, bleeding and dishonored, at the feet of traitors—who would rend the Union, and and exchange the Constitution whioh bears the honored- name of Wash ihtoh for that whioh was ooncocted in a oonolave of perjured and blood-stained .■. traitors—if, thereby| they could save their party, and climb into power and place. In giving jup a party name, for the sake of the oonatry, the Bepnblicans have only done thei! duty and attested the reality of their profosaed patriotism; and they would have been unworthy to bear a name so honored, so expressive of all that is most cherished by patrioUo hearts, had they refused to maki the eacrific*. Butin SO doing they ignole no principle- tW yield no truUq they keUnquiah no opinion; for, in this lerrible j crisis, all that is em braoedin the nure. comprehensive term which they have laid aside is conbcntrated in the aU-important [term UNION. When the ship ofi: state i! in . danger of sink ing, or is on Bre, it is no time for dlsons •ion as to the disposition of the cargos er the sxaot point of tile compass to which it •hall be steeiud;-h!nt all minds an, or ought to be, absorbs [ in the one question, how,to save it from its lnmmiti«i» peril. This idea of sahraticn is emhraocd in the word Union; for to' maintain .the Union implies the suppression of the rebellion, ' whleb, like h ire, is sonsnmlng us, or, like a mighty tempest, is thrsatsning to break our Ship to pisoes and engulf it in fathom lessruln. | In the array of parties whioh this move ment inaugurates, how will the oountry be divided 1 On tie ode side will be Union, together with ill who go in for-what la es sential to the maintenanoe of the Union— a vigorous prosecution of the war, and a oordlal, whole-hearted support of the Gov ernment in thatj paramount object. And who wUI be on the other side? Of course those who maintain the opposite, of all this ■vthose who are in sympathy with the reb el*—-those who wish to surrender—those who aip crying out for posies; although it should be at iho prioe of dishonor and ruin —those who 'do what' they .oan to embar ■ rase tho Government—those who will not flght for their: ooUntsy, and who chuckle at •very disaster to its arms—those; in short, Who are known everywhere by that rather rough term—copperhead*—a class oompsred with whom [the tories of the Bov olutlon were honorable men. [zeify At the pablie reception giten to Colonel Grierson and hie office™ at New Orleans, on the 6th inat., the gallant Colonel, in response to an address of welcome by Ur L. Madison Day, spoke as follows: “Gentlemen: It did not need this demon stration to conyinee meof the high appre- Se eerrl cot of my command. I accept this token: “• I haw P«r- SS! d .7^f h 7 0f * nch honors—thou tands of others would hare done the same T™ h"*"*" H hi a heart-offering from the union people of thisoity to their breth ren of the West. The credit of the achieve meni is doe to the men! and officers under “{“““f'i. »ho, endowed with fortitude, tonght with bravery, and overoame every obstacle, and suffered every hardship and privation without murmuring. “In passing through the Confederacy I have had a good opportunity to form a cor reot opinion of its strength. That strength has beenover-eatimated. They have neither the armies nor the resources we have given Uiem oredit for, and we have been greatly deceived in regard to the means and power of the rebels. Passing through their conn try (and the passage war-not a very diffi cult one), I found thousands of good Union mem who are ready and anxious to return t# their allegianoe the moment they oan do so with safety to themselves and families- They will rally around the old flag, by Mores, whenever our army advances, i could have brought away a thousand with m ®i who were anxious to come—-men whom 1 found fugitives from their homes, hid in tbe swamps and forests, where they are hunted like wild beasts by the rebel con scripting officers with blood hounds. Hav ing visited them in their own homes, I have founded my belief upon what 1 heard and saw there, that the day is not.far distant when we shall witness the downfall of the rebellion and the restoration of the Union as it was. ‘‘Thanking you again, gentlemen, 1 oan only assure you that we shall so aot as to deserve your confidence, and nhow our selves worthy the compliments yon have so lavishly bestowed upon us in the Crescent City, and our highest aim shall be to merit your approbation, and' maiqtein the honor and glory of oar eountry.” The suooOTS of Grierson, justly remarks a contemporary, shows hot only what an active and dashing officer oan exeoute with men of a spirit equal to his own, but, also, his experience tells us, as Stoneman's did,, how hollow and empty is that whioh calls itself the “Southern Confederacy.” When onoe he had pieroed the slender cover, CoL Grierson rode down the whole length of the great State of Mississippi with a loss of but one man; and everywhere he found only Union men, misery, and weariness with the war whioh the rebel leaders foreed on the eountry as a oard-shuffier forocs a false eard on his violins. That a cavalry force should be able to ride a diaLanee of eight hundred miles through the enemy’s country certainly shows that that country is pretty well emp tied of its defenders, or that a great part of the population is favorable to our cause.
