The Catholic Chntch and 81a*ery> We published recently, from the Os tholie Telegraphy of Cincinnati, one of the moat influential organs of that Chorch in this country, an article in which hostility to slavery was emphatically avowed and sat isfaction expressed that its destruction must result from the war now in progress. In the last issue of'the ZWegrapA, the e4ir tor, speaking of the course he had thus de liberately determined to porsne, says he had expeeted to “wound, the prejudices of many to. whom he was bound by ties of friendship, and had anticipated a oonsider -1 able decline in his subscription list; bnt, to his surprise, he h** found his subscribers increasing, and from all parts of the coun try commendations of his course are pour ing in.” Among other letters approving Us 'coarse, the editor publishes the following from the slave State of Kentucky: God bless you for what you have written about slavery I Where it. exists the poor while laborer is as tittle thought of as a dog. That it is hostile to the Church is every where evident. Well did the great Bishop of Charleston, Dr. England, say of i the South when, after years of labor, he j accomplished so tittle, “it is’a stubborn 1 sotL” , That the Church has been ever the friend of the slave system is a monstrous assertion. Europe was full of slaves when Christianity was proclaimed —there is not one now. Who suppressed the system? Go on with the good work. Many will denounce you—but far more will i than* you. The Telegraph also publishes an extreot 1 of a letter from a distinguished officer of the Army of the Cumberland, with the re mark that “he,was nevtfr an abolitionist, but Has, tike ourselves, stood up for the de mocracy.” This officer says, writing from* 1 Murfreesboro: • * **l am bappy to see tho splendid stand you took in the Telegraph against slavery, with its horrors, barbarities and base immoralities. -Slavery isdead. Noth ing can resuscitate it. So learn thiß fret fully you should pay us a visit. There is not a negro in the South who does not know he is free. Around here they have squat ted oh the plantations, and refuse to' work foe anybody but themselves. They have sown tittle crops of their own, and the mas ters have oeased to exercise any control over them. As an indication, I will cite a strong 1 oue. The lady of the house where I am I claying attempted to punish one of her I negro women this morning. I had to step j in }o care the mistress from being badly need op, as the darkey was belaboring her I with tee stick intended for her own pan* I ishment. “£z two duet omnet lt is need* less for me to say that I applaud every sentiment you expressed in the Telegraph. Your course is that of the prudent naviga tor, who, watohing the black speck in the horixon, sees it expand into a portentous storm, and calls up his crew to take in sail and prepare for a contest with the elements. The storm will pass away, and you will be I found sailing under full sail, while those I who took no heed will be scattered by the gale. I am heart and hand with you in this I cause. Slavery is doomed, and those who I would now uphold it will be held up, in a | very short time, to publio odium and exc- I oration. No statesman will vindicate it; I I no. friend of human progress will stretch I [forth a hand to break ils fall; no lover of I I humanity and-religion will grieve for its I overthrow. I have lived long enough in the South to see ils workings, itsdiagust- I ing features, debasing the higher prinolples I of our nature, warring with religion, and I patronizing vice and immorality. Almigh- I ty God has certainly ordained its destruo- I I tion in this country, where it has been more I I offensive and immoral than in any other, I and until it is utterly extinot this war can- ; I hot, from the nature of things, cease. lam I in favor of a cessation of hostilities at as I early a day as possible; therefore, I am in I favor of the President’s proclamation. This I State was made for white people and free I labor, and when slavery no longer blights I its borders we may expect to see the church I and the school house take the place of the I slave pen and market. A Baltimore Traitress. Miss Fanny James, daughter of Mrs. | John James, who was sent south a few weeks since, was arrested on Tuesday, on 1 the charge of treason. The arrest was I prompted by the discovery of the following letter: “Richmond, Va., March 15»— Sandayf noon.—My Dear Fannie: Your letters hare just been received, and the pleasure it gate os you cannot imagine. Harry was pro* fectly delighted with his uniform. The goods you spoke of in your last hate been received, and was a perfect God-send. The quinine and liquors were very much need* ed. And knowing your promptness in filling all such orders, wo can rely on your dispatching the goods at the’earliest possible moment. Well, dear .Fan-: nie, have nothing to do with him, as he is a mean, oowardly villain. But you say you have a good deal of respect for him, con sidering he is a Yankee. Well, according to our opinion he is a mighty little Ftih, Any man that would make war upon wo men is beneath notice. But I acknowledge he’s right in one respect—that the Balti-, more ladies are more dangerous than the men. I’m of the opinion that if the men were like the women the villainous Yan kees would have been’ obliged to make a retrogade movement long ago. They re quest me to tell you, Fannie, to keep quiet, and don’t let them have anything on you, as you can do much more for us where you are, and if they ahonld find you but, why, take the Yankee oath three times a day if they wish it, just before each meal. You hav* taken many a bitter dose of medicine, and it won’t taste a bit worse than the rest. Harry says he will write by; next express, as he Is very busy, but requests me to say all was right. The order, Fannie, I write on a separate piece of paper when Harry makes it out. How Is.coueinßud? Heigh ho 1 can’t you laugh at the Fish about that? Bid you ory to him?
