WBPfIteBDAY MORMTNO, APBIL 29.
Bald into Western Tirfinia.
<lar community was thrown into ooneid
«nble ezdtement yeitarday morning at
. the intelligence that a largo body of rebels
—oaralry and artillery—were adranoing
( In this direction In' the upper Talley of the
Honongahela; that they had captured Mor
gantown, Vi, and were supposed to be ad
. Tanning towards Uniontown, Pi Their
numbers were Tarionsly ■ tated at bum four
to- eight thousand, and some reports had
them still higher. The effeet upon our peo
ple was to awaken the old war feeling of
1861; but there was nothing like alarm for
ourjown safety.
Measures were at onoe taken
a foree to go to the rescue of our friendsup
the riser, and after some preliminary ar
rangements were made;, meeting of the
the union league, open of course to all, an
- ecoount of whioh will be found in ourlooal
department.
. In Ef 1 f nloon dfepatohes were recelred
from Wheeling asking for aid, as'the rebels
were then within thirty miles of that city,
toatag bridges and pushing on rapidly.
TMs rendered it a matter of painful anxiety
as to what ought to be done—whether to go
up the Monongahela or down the Ohio to
Wheeling, for both seemed equally in need
of suooor. While we write the work of or
ganisation is going on with great energy.
The details will be found in their proper
plaoes.
,xhis formidable raid or ioraaion baa
donbUeu boon undertaken at this particu
lar junctor* as a diToraion. Hoorn la
about to more forward, and it ia probable
■•that the rebel generate are conaoioua of
their inability to meet him, and hence they
got up thia distracting demonatration upon
Weet Virginia. Indeed, intimations hare
been giren by the rebel papers that some
thingof thia kind wouldoocnr-that Hoonra
would hare work in hia rear as'well as in
hil front.
Tfc« Two Years’ and nine Months’
Men— Slreogth or Hooker’. Army.
“Some people," u 7> the N. Y. Tima,
“ere afraid that the retain of these regi
ments will so weaken Hooker's army as to
make speedy operations impossible. This
i* not so. We do not suppose that in the
whole of the thirty-so Ten returning New
Xork regiments there are now more than
between ten and twelve thousand men—
and even these will not all be taken from
Hooker's army; and as an official report,
published by authority the other day, mag
nanimously informed the rebels and us that
Hooker had a strength of 159,328 men, it
will be seen that the loss of the two years'
regiments ought hot to furnish an exouse for
laaotion. Beside the two years'menfirom this
State, there are also some regiments from
Pennsylvania, whose term has expired, but
their number is small.’' We may add that
the number of Pennsylvania regiments,
(nine months’ men), whose term of service
is about to expire, is fourteen— which will
probably increase the above estimated ten
or twelve thousand to fifteen or sixteen
thousand. Bjt the army under Hooker,
acoording to the foregoing estimate, will
atUl considerably exceed one hundred and
forty thousand men.
The Methodist Church oe Slavery.
At a Uta meeting of the New Tori East
Conference of 'the Methodist Episcopal
Church, the doting day of the session was
deroted to the country. The oath of «n»-
gianoe was administered to all the'mem
bers. This was followed by numerous pa>
• triotio addresses, flan. Wool and the Bon.
M. P. Obui spoke, the last named gen
tleman said, that within a few days “the
President had told him that no church had
given its ministers audits men so freely as
the Methodist Episcopal church all over
this land." A.
The last Sabbath he was in Washington,
(said he} during the session of Congress hr

outskirts of the city, and one of the com

Tho Committee on Slavery then reported.
We subjoin the first resolution, which is
onpremise of the spirit of the whole report:
Xitolvidf Ist. That American slavery is
in principle and praotioe fundamentally
, incompatible with the principles of Chris
tjanlty, with repubUeaq institutions, with
the peace and prosperity of our country,
and with the traditions, dootrinls, and dis
cipline of our Churoh; aud it beoomes us
as as patriots, and as Metho
dists, not to deftnd its existenoe, but to seek
py our influence, our preaching, our pray
ers, and our exertions for its extirpation.
> The 4th resolution severely oondemns the"
“black laws" of some of the Northern
etid which some of our copperheads
wished to have enaoted in this State.
