In this latter partic ular none are more important than the Al legheny Valley road, which oonneets us with the vast and varied wealth which na ture has so lavishly stored in the extensive region drained by the river whose name it bear*—chief among which are iron, oil and lumber.-. Although only finished and In operation as far as Kittanning, (46 miles) that road has been far more successful ihan many others 61 much greater length and larger pretensions. Its business has steadily in - creased, unlil at length its affairs are so ' prosperous that the oompany is able to push "7 the road on to the next important point, tho mouth of tho Mahoning, This is one of r the most important points on the Allegheny river; for it is here that roads from Clarion, v Jefferson, Elk, and other oounties oonverge. These roads are generally pretty good, and are much travelled; while the. road from this point down to Kiuanning is so had that it is bat liulo used. The distance is only ten miles. This extension, therefore, will put this railroad in oonneotlon with all the leading roads extensive and rioh region lying north of that point and east of the river. This extension of ten miles brings the 7;road to. the piece where the original sur vey leaves the river. Thence it follows the valley of the Mahoning a few pass- IngStewardson Furnace; thence across to Bedbankereek at a plaoe where these two important lumber streams approsoh within leu than a mile of each other. From this . last named place the main line oontinues up the Bedbank far into Jefferson, county, and thenoe northeast through Bidgeway to ' 7 the State line, near Olean, New York. But what is how by far the more Important ex * tension from, the place where the road reaches the Bedbank, is the Clarion Branch, whioh, bearing northward, reaches the Cla • - tion river at GaUensburg, after passing some twenty milts through a beautiful agricul tural country, and one of the richest iron . regions in Western Pennsylvania. Thin branch runs exactly in the direction of - Franklin and the oil region. From Clarion river to the month of Sandy creek the dis tance is from 20 to 25 miles, through a I -good country, and, like the country south of the Clarion, rioh in iron and ooaL Sandy creek is only a short distance down the river from Franklin. This Is the most natural and feasible route by whioh this city oan bo brought Into railroad oonneotlon with the oil region; for it is already made and pro . vided for to the month of Mahoning, whioh 7 is at least three-fifths of the wholedistanee. Bat the greatest advantage is, that it will atones accommodate the oil, the iron and , .the lumber business. Another advantage Is tho easy grade. On no part of the roote will the grade be heavy; bat so easy is the grade from the month of Mahoning to Pitta busfcb, that a tingle locomotive will be able to transport a train carrying three thous and barrels of oil. * The extension of the road to Mahoning (oifly ten miles) will, it is estimated, add ' < at least fifty per cent to Its business and • x revenue, while it will enhance its running expenses very slightly* Bat were it ex . tended to the oil region, either by the route •we have spoken or along the bank of the river, it would bo one of the most use fol and one of the best psying roads in the State. The route we have indicated, how ‘ over,, would be the, best, whether utility, profit or distance is taken into view. V'.-7 From. Franklin there will soon be a rail read to Brie.; so that this road, if extended . to that place, will put this city into direct ; connection with Brie, and with the great of railroads whioh ran along tho ; southern shore of Lake Brie. It gives me pleasure to be ableto say that it is without foundation or justification. In fact, In statement and in i implication it is utterly and infamously | false. u As it is made a reproaoh to 'Massachu setts tbat'suoh orders are givon by one of her oitixena, I desire to say to you, the chief executive magistrate of the State, having hid many of her 'unsurpassed reg- I iments under my command, that I bear | constantly in mind that I am a son of Mas* I saehusetta, and grateful as fhe remem brance may bo to me and mine, 1 hare yet greater satisfaction in the fact that, os an officer of the army <#the United States, following the instructions of the Presi* s I dent and the laws of the land, I have nev j er performed, or permitted, or passed, with- I out its appropriate censure, any aot incon l eistent with my daty, with the_ spirit and ] principles of the people among whom I 1 was born, or that, justly interpreted, would 1 not meet their approval, without party distinctions.” Northern and southern Women. The other day we took occasion to allude to the lively spirit with wbioh the women of the South enter into the cause of the rebels, and showed how the display of a similar degree of enthusiasm amoug the women of- the loyal Btates would help the government and sustain the patriotism of our people. A signal illustration Of the | activity of the Soutnerniemales is given in I the official order of the rebel General I Stuart, just published, which formally ap* I points Miss Antonio J. Ford to iho position of ‘‘Honorary Aide-de-Camp” in his mili tary establishment, as a mark of the spe cial confidence he reposes in her “patriot ism, fidelity and ability.” Stuart further I requires that Miss Fora be dalyrespeoted and obeyed “by all the lovers of a gener- I ous nature”—and the lesson is a good ono I Igr our women. I It is by no means essential that every I one of our brigadiers should attaoh a fas cinating female to his staff in the honorary capacity of aid-de<eamp, nor that the women of the North should unsex themselves like the brilliant and active but somewhat er* ratio Miss Antonio Ford, but they can do better. They can Bay good, bold words for Freedom, and not be ashamed to say them; I they can tell a copperhead.in society that I he is np better than a rebel, and that he I should go to his place among the traitors; I they can become members of the Loyal I Leagues, attend the Union meetings, and I in many such wayß Infuse new tile and | spirit into the ranks of the people.— N, F. Fwi Tns Usiox Sesiimest is Missouxl— A letter from* Palmyra, Mo., to tbe Boston Journal says the prospects of that State are most promising; “The rebel sympathizers are fast selling oat and leaving their places to be filled by good and loyal men. The Union sentiment in Missouri is intensely loyal; it recog nises but two parties, the one for the Union, the other against it. Bo we -think and set. We are getting more loyal every day. We understand (he awful responsibility resting on the President, and we will stand by him through this fiery ordeal, and with him oonquer orperish. Such are the sentiments expressed in the current thought, and in the public meetings which gather to consider i the posture of affairs and the present crisis.
